1 EMBA Regional Minister Team Leader nformation for applicants ntroduction The East Midlands Baptist Association is seeking to appoint a Regional Minister Team Leader to succeed Dianne Tidball. The role is full time and involves strategic leadership across all aspects of the Association with a commitment to taking forward the current vision and direction of the Association. The person the EMBA is seeking to appoint will be: A gifted Christ centred, Spirit filled leader. Capable of supporting and encouraging our churches in healthy, mission focused lifestyles. Experienced with wisdom and understanding to nurture and support ministers and church leaders. The EMBA is in good heart and is committed to supporting existing churches in their ministry and mission and seeking to pioneer new church communities. This document is to be read in conjunction with the EMBA Vision and Values booklet. The Terms and Conditions of Employment and The Staffing Handbook are available on request. The salary is 1.4 times the BU minimum stipend plus the BU housing allowance. The holiday entitlement is 5 weeks per year plus statutory holidays. The EMBA follows the BU sabbatical programme. 1
2 What is the East Midlands Baptist Association (EMBA)? Purpose of the EMBA The purpose of the EMBA is to serve Baptists of the East Midlands in mission. Other information which describes the EMBA vision can be found on the Association s web site Activities n all its activities the EMBA seeks to do God s will and to serve the churches in mission. There are currently five areas of priority; Pioneering, Equipping, nspiring, Partnering, Caring. All have the focus of extending God s Kingdom by supporting those who are serving in our Baptist churches. Our overall aim is to encourage churches to be healthy and growing. This includes: Supporting church leadership by testing calls to ministry, recognising a call, facilitating placements for ministers in training, development of newly accredited ministers with training and mentors, working with churches and ministers in the settlement process and providing pastoral and welfare support to ministers and their families. t also seeks to work with and develop church leadership teams. Working in partnership with others in wider ministries, represent the EMBA in the BU, contributing to the work of the BU and promoting the work of the BMS. ncluding networking with other streams and denominations to observe what the Spirit is saying to the wider church and determine how and what might be beneficial to the EMBA. Through the add to ministry services, organise events, communicate and deal with media, provide treasury and resource management, organise and manage the EMBA Team, support the Working Groups and provide secretarial functions of minute taking, convening meetings and the like. 3 Background detail Our structure The EMBA is a Company limited by Guarantee which brings together approximately 155 Churches in Leicestershire, Rutland, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. Five churches have a membership of over 160, 31between , and 119 less than 80 of which 74 have 29 or less members. Our team The Association Team comprises a Regional Minister Team Leader (this post), two salaried full time regional ministers, a part time non-salaried regional minister, an Administrator, a non-salaried bookkeeper. Governance The EMBA elects a Board of Directors which has a responsibility to oversee the work of the Association. The Regional Minister Team Leader reports to this Board and will be a director. The EMBA Company owns a Trust Company which holds the EMBA s reserves. The EMBA has a number of specialist Working Groups which report to the Board. Their activities are facilitated by the Association Team. Office location The EMBA has its office within the offices of West Bridgford Baptist Church, NG2 7NF. 3
4 Job Description This job description is to be read in conjunction with the employment terms and conditions and EMBA Staff Handbook. The Regional Minister Team Leader (RMTL) has the duties as listed below. The RMTL may delegate tasks and duties to the Team members as they deem appropriate, always being mindful of the job description and terms and conditions of the Team members. The resources available and the essential nature of the duties mean that certain tasks can be delegated only in exceptional circumstances. RMTL is responsible to the EMBA Board of Directors with the Moderator of the Board acting as line manager. People reporting to the RMTL are three Regional Ministers, Administrator of EMBA and Team Specialist, salaried or non-salaried. The RMTL s duties are: 1. To work with the EMBA Board of Directors, Member Churches and Working Groups to seek God s will for the future direction of the Association, in supporting its Member Churches, the BUGB and pioneering and opportunities in the East Midlands. 2. To provide effective leadership in the EMBA to carry out God s will and mission for the Association. Do this by: a. Formulating actions to implement God s discerned plans and purpose for the Association, its Member Churches and clusters and networks of such churches. b. Communicating effectively. c. Working and liaising with other local ecumenical networks, Partner Associations, colleges, the BMS and specialist teams at the BU. d. Overseeing and directing the activities of the Association s Working Groups e. Being one of the EMBA s representatives on the BUGB Council, and other working groups and committees as required. 3. Promote, inspire and develop healthy churches and church leadership teams through the continuous development of church leaders, the support and mentoring of churches, provision of relevant training programmes, regional and sub-regional church gatherings 4
5 4. Provide guidance and pastoral support for those in and considering church ministry and pastoral leadership. This to include people: a. Testing a call to ministry and following the recognition and accreditation processes of the Baptist Union of Great Britain. b. Newly accredited as ministers, ensuring effective supervision and development, liaising with mentors, and reporting to BUGB Ministries Team. c. Entering the settlement process, facilitate Ministerial settlements within the Association and representing the Association at meetings of the National Settlement Team. d. n an ongoing ministry, by promoting in-service training, sabbatical programmes, the Baptist Union of Great Britain s Appraisal Scheme, other resources for ongoing ministerial development and facilitating local and regional gatherings for ministers. 5. Provide guidance and pastoral support for churches entering the settlement process by, facilitating Vision Days, arranging the services of an nterim Moderator and regular contact. 6. Provide effective conciliation service to achieve reconciliation within and between churches. Keep comprehensive records. Provide ongoing pastoral care to all ministers and churches. Frequently contact ministers and pastoral leaders and their families. Encourage and support churches, as required, with preaching and teaching. Liaise with other Association Team members and BUGB teams on matters relevant to ministers as deemed appropriate. 7. Work sensitively with EMBA member churches, other churches and agencies to develop new pioneering initiatives, church replanting and facilitate closure arrangements. Provide for pastoral support, specialist guidance and resources as appropriate and available. 8. Provide effective leadership and management of the salaried and non-salaried staff of the Association Team. Act as their line manager, ensuring that all team members are made accountable for the delivery of their role and are properly supported and equipped to enable them to do so. 9. Provide regular advice and information to the Board as to the progress of programmes, policies, processes and financial matters to ensure the effectiveness and probity of the EMBA. The Board, from time to time, may request further advice and information. 10. Work with the association treasurer to ensure financial systems are in place to use the Associations resources wisely and take appropriate decisions on the 5
6 distribution of Home Mission Grants. Promote giving by churches to Home Mission and BMS. 11. Ensure that the Association meets its statutory requirements with regard the Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities. 12. Carry out other duties, which are appropriate for the post that the Board will from time to time require. 13. Keep available an efficient means of travelling around the East Midlands and beyond. 14. Be prepared regularly to work unsociable hours including evenings and weekends 6
7 Person Specification The following person specification will be used as the basis for the selection process. Capable of building the Team and engendering trust from its members. Personally and professionally well organised. A single name will be brought to a Special Meeting of the Association at which the recommended candidate will make a presentation, similar to that made at interview. The Special Meeting, after seeking God and appropriate consideration, will decide to offer the post or not. f the Special Meeting decides to offer the position to the candidate, subject to satisfactory references being received, an offer letter will be sent. Spring 2016 The appointed person takes up the role (subject to their notice period). 10
11 Handover period The present incumbent will remain in post until 31 December The phasing of the handover of the work within this period will be agreed between the successful candidate and the present incumbent. nterview day t is envisaged the interview day will be divided into two parts, the first in the morning, the second after a lunch together. nterview One Leadership, the role of RMTL and taking forward the EMBA This interview will explore your calling and suitability for the RMTL role, including your perspective on: How God has brought you to this point and equipped you to undertake this role How you would provide leadership to the Association How you see the Association developing in the next five years We will ask you to bring a 15 minute (max) presentation on the above followed by questions from the Selection Group. There will also be opportunities for you to ask questions in this session. nterview Two personal experience and faith This interview will consider your: Conversion and Christian experience Theological principles and convictions Calling to leadership To allow you to prepare effectively, you will be given prior notice of scenarios to which the Selection Group would wish to hear your thoughts and responses. 11
