3 Sony Center, Berlin, Germany Steel structure incl. Cables: 910 tons Single paned glass roof: m² Fabric: m² The central element of the Sony Center is the m² roof, covering the market place. It spans 102 m at the main axis and 77 m at the minor axis. The elliptical space in plan in an allweather gathering place, the social centre of the building complex. The slightly swaying roof construction made of steel, glass and translucent fabric produces interesting lighting effects. The unique form of the roof, whose installation required the highest technical niveau, consists of 750 tons of steel, a glass area of approximately m², 160 tons of cables and the textile membrane. The displacement of the centre axis and the swinging form of the perimeter ring bestow upon the roof construction a sense of dynamism. In the centre and at the connections to adjacent buildings the roof is open. This provides an additional advantage to the visitor by continually bringing fresh air through the open circulation areas. 5 Swiss Re London Headquarters, London, UK Top Of The Building Steel: 85 tons Glass: m² Swiss Re, one of the world's leading reinsurers, has achieved approval for a new building for its London operations, including the world-wide headquarters of its Life & Health Division. The innovative design by architects Foster and Partners for the site in the heart of London's insurance district responds to the requirement for a building of distinction in accordance with current planning guidelines. Rising to m (590 feet), the curved form complements the group of high buildings in the neighbourhood and will undoubtedly become a symbol of the city. It will incorporate attractive high quality working space for employees as well as new public spaces and retail amenities. 7 DomAquarée, Berlin, Germany Steel: 550 tons Glass: m² The m² floor space of this city quarter "DOMAQURÉE" is comprised of office space, shops, a hotel a "House of Life", and apartments. Particularly attractive is a 30 m high aquarium looming in the centre of the four part ensemble of the "DOMAQURÉE". Through the middle of the aquarium, a panorama lift takes visitors to the uppermost level, where the wellness and gastronomy areas provide a view over the rooftops of Berlin. Waagner Biro SGT's scope of work includes the envelope of the top two floors of the two main buildings, consisting of large single and double curved insulated glass units. 8 Berliner Tor Center, Hamburg, Germany Total hanging façade area: m² Rotating flaps for circulation Steel: 230 tons Aluminium profile: 330 tons Glass: m² Berliner Tor, the old police presidium at Berliner Tor in Hamburg, has been renovated and expanded. The construction consists of two areas with a total of 7 building elements including the infrastructure of a 2 storey garage, shops, and restaurants at ground level as well as office buildings and, in part, apartments in the upper storeys. Design, delivery, and installation of the outer shell of a 2 shell façade for 5 office buildings with a total area of m². The scope of work also contains rotating flaps that can individually be activated to control the buildings air circulation, challises in the middle room, as well as the Attica, and diverse panels. Of special interest is the controlled air circulation in combination with shading as well as the fabrication of coloured folios in special designs, for optical effects, placed on the outer glass panes. 9 Megaron Theatre, Athens, Greece Megaro, the Athens Concert Hall is a complex containing a complete cultural and performance centre as wll as conference facilities. Prominently located in the centre of Athens, its technical capacity is unrivalled by most other European venues. The glass and steel entrance canopies by Waagner Biro provide access to the site. Constructed using a triangular mesh of steel hollow sections clad in insulated glass units with outer panels of fritted Parsol glass, they provide a dramatic entry filled with light and shadow to this important cultural centre. 11 Zlote Tarasy, Warsaw, Poland Approx m² steel and glass atrium enclosure This m² project is extraordinary for Warsaw and for Europe. This site is one of the most prominent in Warsaw, located immediately adjacent to the main train station and the Palace of Culture in Central Warsaw. The project contains office space that will make it a centre for urban activity in the city. Waagner Biro SGT's role in this project is to provide the m² glass and steel roof covering the central shopping area. Building on the steel node technology developed for the Great Court of British Museum, the roof consists of an undulating geometrically complex net of welded steel elements supporting triangular glass panes. At the front side, the roof comes down to the ground, forming the main entrance to the complex and the primary connector between interior and exterior public spaces. 13 Opera Copenhagen, Denmark Stainless steel cladding: approx. 900 m² Stainless steel structure: approx. 180 tons Foyer gazing: approx. 900 m² Glazing level 5: approx. 430 m² Glazing lobby: approx. 330 m² The doubly curved foyer façade of the new Opera House in Copenhagen is an exposed structure. Situated on an island within the harbour of Copenhagen opposite the royal castle, it is seen through one of the main urban axes as a piece of artwork by the architect Henning Larsens. The envelope itself consists of a doubly curved façade with an app. Area if 1800 m². Horizontal wind loads are resisted by the horizontal load-bearing beams made of stainless steel spanning between the vertical curved wind columns. In total there are 13 rows of horizontal beams with a medium length of app. 100 m fixed backwards to 23 vertical curved wind columns. The quantity of stainless steel structure amounts to 100 tons and 16 tons stainless steel cladding. Waagner Biro SGT was called in an early stage and has developed a unique design solution in cooperation with the architect. 14 DR BYEN, Copenhagen, Denmark Concert Hall of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation m² of diagonally arranged glass Façade The cable grid façades are located on all four sides of the DR Byen Building with different surface areas. The structure of the façade is divided into a carrying structure, the cable grid system, and a skin of panellized elements that is carried by the cable net. The cables are fixed on the bottom edge as well as the top edge of the façade by "BI ARTICULATED STRUTS". On the vertical edges as well as the top edge the bearings of the façade skin are enhanced by springs, in addition to the bi-articulated struts. 15 Hofburg, Vienna, Austria Kesselhaushofüberdachung Steel structure: 80 tons Glazing: m² Waagner Biro's scope of work is the design and installation of an envelope for the new conference center in the Hofburg Palace complex, a 3 storey high extension of the so called "Kesselhaus" (the former boiler house of the palace). One of the preconditions for the design requirements were that a complete roofing of the courtyard was not allowed due to the historically protected façade of the "Alte Burg" (old part of the palace) and insufficient lightning and ventilation of existing rooms. The basic idea was a light steel-glass-construction which docks onto the west façade where additional space was needed, however, preserving the 3 other facades of the courtyard. These requirements, resulted into the aimed emphasis of interaction between the old and the new parts by means of form and choice of materials. 16 Dubai Festival City, UAE Destined to become a focal point for the people of Dubai and global tourists, Festival Centre is designed with people in mind providing a unique destination. A creek side "City within a City" and true master planned waterfront community comprising a unique mix of entertainment, dining, shopping, sport and leisure facilities, automotive dealerships, hotels, a marina, residential and office components. Ideally located in close proximity to Dubai International Airport. Waagner Biro's scope of work consists of the roof over the Crescent Mall, the Roof and front wall of the meeting / leisure place called festival Square as well as the structure that combines the two. 1) Crescent Mall Curved steel construction with approx. 600 tons.
