REQUIRED TEXTS & RESOURCES Friss, R. H. and Sellers, T. A. (2009). Epidemiology for public health practice. Sudbury, MA: Jones & Bartlett. ISBN: Friis, R. H. (2011). Epidemiology for public health practice: Student study guide. Sudbury, MA: Jones & Bartlett. ISBN: Access to Blackboard Learn course site. Working calculator brought to class. RECOMMENDED: APHA. Control of Communicable Diseases Manual (18 th Ed.) Washington, DC (copy on reserve in the library) COURSE DESCRIPTION This is an introductory course for undergraduate students who plan to pursue a career in the health sciences. Students will learn to analyze problems and make decisions based on application of epidemiological concepts and methods in a variety of settings and across a spectrum of disease topics. Social, physical and biological determinants of disease will be examined and the epidemiology of selected infectious and chronic diseases will be studied in greater depth. Skills include methods for identifying and evaluating sources of health information, calculation of key epidemiological measures, and public health surveillance and investigation techniques. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the completion of this course the student should: 1. Define the uses and significance of epidemiology as a foundation for public health. 2. Describe epidemiological approaches to defining and measuring health problems in defined populations. 3. Understand the principles and methods appropriate to the investigation of epidemics. 4. Be able to calculate appropriate measurements of disease occurrence. 5. Be able to research disease etiology and other public health information online. 6. Be able to identify and distinguish between causal and non-causal associations. 7. Explain the contributions of epidemiology to disease prevention, health promotion and health policy. 8. Understand the epidemiological basis and population trends for specific diseases studied. 1

2 CLASS FORMAT This is a hybrid course, meaning we will meet weekly in class AND fully utilize resources in Blackboard Learn. The course consists of lectures, discussions, student presentations, group problem-solving exercises, textbook reading and online quiz-taking. Our Blackboard Learn course site contains most PowerPoint presentations, as well as quizzes and web links to further epidemiological resources STUDENT PARTICIPATION/ RESPONSIBILITIES Students are expected to arrive to class on time and participate fully in the day s activities. Many times this will mean participating in group case studies. Although attendance will not be taken per se, attendance/participation will be noted and recorded by names appearing on all written materials completed in class. Should a student s final grade be questioned, absence of participation/attendance will be taken into account. All textbook readings and Study Guide assignments should be completed before the class session for which they are assigned. Study Guide homework assignments are not graded, but will help you prepare for each week s online quiz. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS Quizzes: Ten online quizzes are open book and open notes and are based on the Study Guide. Each week there is a quiz, it will be posted on that Monday, and should be taken online no later than midnight of Friday of that week. Exams: These will be cumulative exams based on texts, lectures and activities. To prepare for exams, it is STRONGLY suggested that you practice answering the Study Questions and Exercises at the end of each chapter in textbook. Exams will be multiple choice, short answer and calculation problems. All exams will be given during class time. Students may bring an 8 X 11.5 paper with formulas ONLY to exams. Students should also bring a #882 Scantron and #2 pencil to exams. Make up exams will only be given under dire emergencies with prior approval and with documentation and are administered during finals week at your professor s convenience. Disease-of-the-Week Presentation: These 10-minute presentations will be made at the beginning of each class. Students will work in pairs to prepare a (no more than 5-slide) PowerPoint presentation and a 1-page brief on a disease chosen from a list provided. See attached. 2

3 ASSIGNMENT: DISEASE CONDITION OF THE WEEK (DoW) Pairs of students will select one disease/condition from the following list. Create and present a 5-slide PowerPoint; this must also be submitted via BB LEARN 24 hours before the due date/time. Presentations will be done using PowerPoint and take no more than 10 minutes, so practice your presentation before class. Please note that each disease presentation has a specific date on the course schedule (i.e., plan your life!) Presentations must present each of the elements discussed below: Slide 1: Name of disease/condition; Case definition/identification Slide 2: Infectious agent; Reservoir; Mode of transmission; Incubation period Slide 3: Occurrence (person-which populations, place-geographic, time-seasonal or lifespan) Slide 4: Decade (or so) trend information (has incidence increased? decreased?) Slide 5: Main control measures (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary) Refer to the American Public Health Association: Control of Communicable Diseases Manual (on library reserve) AND to your BB Learn course Web Links. List of diseases/conditions 1. West Nile Virus 2. Rabies 3. Gonorrhea 4. Ebola 5. HIV 6. Hantavirus 7. Giardiasis 8. Histoplasmosis 9. Trichinellosis 10. Norovirus 11. Malaria 12. Dengue fever 13. Human papilloma virus 14. Diphtheria 15. Amoebiasis 16. Tetanus 17. Leprosy 18. SARS 19. Hepatitis C 20. Anthrax COURSE EVALUATION Assignment Points Exams 1-3 (75 points each) 225 Quizzes 50 Disease of the Week 25 TOTAL 300 The grading scale (percent) that will be used for this course is: A = , A- = 90-92, B+ = 87-89, B = 83-86, B- = 80-82, C+ = 77-79, C = 73-76, C- = 70-72, D+ = 67-69, D = 64-66, F = 63% or less. Each absence after one will lower your final letter grade by 1/3 a letter grade. 3
