2 PowerPivot What Is It? PowerPivot for Excel is a data analysis tool that delivers unmatched computational power directly within the application users already know and love Microsoft Excel It s the user-friendly way to perform data analysis using familiar Excel features you already know, such as PivotTables, PivotChart views, and slicers It s the fast way to generate rich and interactive analysis tools - it s the right way to achieve deeper business insight and shorter decision cycles Features and benefits with Excel 2010 PowerPivot for Excel 2010: Power to Excel people Create Your First PowerPivot Workbook (Tutorial) 2

5 Before Getting Started Background information It would be helpful for you to be familiar with some basic concepts before using PowerPivot including our Microsoft architecture, OLAP and dimensional modeling Click on the icons below to view our Getting Started information Microsoft Architecture OLAP Dimensional Modeling 5

6 Download IU BI Getting Started with Excel PowerPivot Installing PowerPivot 1. To initiate a download of the software, go to: e081c894-e4ab-42df-8c87-4b99c1f3c49b&displaylang=en 2. Click Run to start the install You must have administrator permissions to do this! 6

7 Install IU BI Getting Started with Excel PowerPivot Installing PowerPivot 3. Click Next to continue 4. Accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next. 5. Enter your name and company if applicable and click Next Click Install to begin the installation 6. Click Yes if you are asked whether to allow the installation. The install will take a few minutes to run 7. Once complete, you will see the window on the right 8. Click Finish to complete the installation 7

8 Install IU BI Getting Started with Excel PowerPivot Installing PowerPivot 9. The next time you start Excel it will load the PowerPivot software 10.Click Install 11.You should see a new tab in Excel called PowerPivot : 8

9 Install IU BI Getting Started with Excel PowerPivot Installing PowerPivot You may get an error message that says this: the microsoft.netframework 3.5 sp1 must be installed on your computer before you can install power pivot... If you do get this message this means you need to install: Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 You can download this by following this link: -5d1a-413d da479ab0d7&displaylang=en You must have administrator permissions to do this! 9

10 Create a PowerPivot enabled spreadsheet Open a new spreadsheet Select the PowerPivot tab Then select the PowerPivot Window Launch 10

11 Create a data connection Select From Database Select From Analysis Services or PowerPivot 11

13 Create a data connection 1 1. Enter a connection name: Enrollment Cube 2. Enter server name: IN-UITS-EBIDD1\SHEPHERR 3. Select the database: Enrollment Reports 4. Select test connection 5. Select Next

14 Create an MDX query (optional) Enter a name for the query If you know how to write MDX code you can enter it directly Most will want to use the graphic interface to build the query, by selecting Design For information about using MDX: 14

15 Add measures and dimensions Use the + controls to expose the columns you want in your query In this case we want to see headcount (count) by Career Year Term Institution Facts Dimensions 15

16 Add measures and dimensions Drag from this pane Drop in this pane Results display as you drop Drag & drop measures & dimensions Drop anywhere in pane Click OK when finished Then click Finish on the table import wizard 16

17 The import definition is built The import wizard will display the results If successful your data will import The data will then appear in the data sheet 17

20 Creating a pivot table Click on the Home tab Click on the arrow below the pivot table menu item Select the type of pivot object you want to create Select where you want to put the pivot table 20

24 Modifying the import definition You may find that you want to add data elements to use for columns, rows, filters, slicers or measures First select the PowerPivot Window launch Note that there is a tab for PowerPivot and a tab for your spreadsheet 24

26 Modifying the import definition You can now make changes to the Table Import definition Drag from this pane Drop in this pane You can also remove attributes from this pane by selected column header and using delete key Select OK when finished Then select SAVE Then SAVE the document 26
