53 BIBLIOGRAPHIE /BIBLIOGRAPHY (sélection) TEXTES/TEXTS, EDITIONS LOEVENBRUCK, 2009 Avec une sorte d évidente simplicité, Dewar & Gicquel pratiquent une sculpture figurative hors sol, plus ou moins facile à identifier, mais dont la relation à quelque référent extérieur ne fait aucun doute. Regardés un à un, leurs motifs semblent précis et signifiants, tant ils empruntent à des niches culturelles ou à des domaines d activités spécialisés, mais considérés à l échelle de leur travail, leur liste s allonge pour mieux brouiller tout kit identitaire comme toute association narrative. Rétrospectivement, le défilé de leurs motifs et leur mode d apparition fragmentaire fait passer ces considérations pour leurs filiations culturelles au plan de l anecdote et les replace dans la zone indistincte d une imagerie globalement pop (ou sub-pop), mise au service de décisions conceptuelles (où il est alors plutôt question d images quelconques pour une sculpture figurative). De la même manière, Dewar & Gicquel s essayent à des techniques variées en amateurs purs et durs sur des matériaux le plus souvent bruts, faisant ainsi usage de sources d inspirations régionalistes (voire cantonales), pour des sculptures essentiellement ex-situ. Cette fabrication main, refuge traditionnel de l expression de soi, est aussi un espace pour des glissages improvisés : moments d exaltation qui laissent la part belle à une forme d endurance héroïque et aux détours arbitraires d un imaginaire débridé. Et voilà que ce subjectivisme exacerbé par la pratique contredit l hypothèsed une décision a priori conceptuelle sur le motif. L hybridation des motifs, techniques et matériaux opérant à différentes échelles de leur travail, permet autant d allers-retours entre l évidence première d une imagerie pop alliée à un langage vernaculaire et les effets seconds d une posture conceptuelle indifférente à son imagerie naturaliste comme à son contexte d exposition. Leurs sculptures, fusions d images quasi ready-made et de formes quasi imprévisibles, synthétisent ainsi très concrètement une posture à cheval entre deux options : celle d un subjectivisme expressionniste à l imaginaire authentiquement pop et celle d un conceptualisme figuratif distancié. Emilie Renard Extrait de «Textes», Editions Loevenbruck, Paris, 2009 With a kind of evident simplicity, Dewar & Gicquel practise an offshore style of figurative sculpture that may be more or less easy to identify, but whose relation to an external referent is beyond doubt. Looked at individually, their motifs seem precise and meaningful, in that they reference cultural niches or specialist activities. But when considered globally, on the scale of their work as a whole, the sheer length of the list prevents the formation of any kind of identity kit or narrative association. Retrospectively, the succession of their motifs and the fragmentary way in which they appear makes these considerations of cultural genealogy seem anecdotal, placing them in the indistinct zone of global Pop (or sub-pop) imagery, made to serve conceptual decisions (where it is more a question of nondescript images for figurative sculpture). In the same way, Dewar & Gicquel try out various techniques in a pure amateur spirit, working with materials, usually in their raw form, to bring out regional (or even cantonal) sources of inspiration in sculptures that are essentially exsitu. This hand-made, the traditional refuge of self-expression, is also a space for improvised slippage, with moments of exaltation giving free rein to a kind of heroic endurance and to the arbitrary detours of an untrammelled imagination. And so this subjectivism exacerbated by practice contradicts the hypothesis of an a priori conceptual decision about the motif. The hybridisation of motifs, techniques and materials operative at different levels of their work allows an endless back and forth between the basic obviousness of the Pop imagery allied to a vernacular language and the secondary effects of a conceptual posture that is indifferent to its natural imagery and to the context of its exhibition. Their sculptures, fusing almost readymade images and almost unforeseen forms, are thus the very concrete synthesis of a position that straddles two options: an expressionist subjectivism based on an authentically Pop imaginary and a distanced figurative conceptualism.
