2 4-Credit Online Course on Research Methodology Introduction Research is an essential part of Higher education today. University, an abode of knowledge is expected to conduct genuine and high quality research which has impact on the society. Teaching and Research should be synthesized so as to bring in relevance to the academic activity in the university. Linkages with Industry as well as other Government and Non-Government organizations also have very valuable influence on the research conducted in the Universities. SNDT Women s University places great importance on research. Faculty research, sponsored research as well as Departmental/ Institutional research are important research activities in the University. Ph. D. Programme in SNDT Women s University is one such research activity which aims at enhancing, sharpening research skills of future researchers. In order to provide basic understanding about research in specific area, almost each Master programme has introduced a course (at least 4-credit) on Research methodology. Some Master level programmes also insist on conducting 4 to 8 credit research study. This online course is planned to provide knowledge and skills in advance research methodology to Ph.D. Students (newly registered) as well as for the faculty who are interested in keeping up with new trends in research methodology in their respective discipline. Course Objectives The participants will be able to Understand framework for scientific enquiry. Use electronic resources to conduct literature review Examine trends and patterns in the use of various research methods Select appropriate research method for conducting empirical research Use /develop/select appropriate tools for data collection Select statistical tools for data analysis Use appropriate software for data analysis Use appropriate style of preparing bibliography Prepare a research proposal Appreciate the benefits of various types of research Prerequisites Knowledge and skills Basic knowledge of research process For Students: Admission to Ph.D. Course in SNDT Women s University Readings of suggested articles/papers ICT Related Skills Use of computer and internet Use of Knowledge of web 2.0 tools (like use of Blog, Group, Google document/google Drive, etc. ) is desirable. 2

Preparation of Research Proposal Process of preparation of research proposal, Objectives, Research Questions, hypothesis, assumptions weeks (These 120 hours include self study, group work as well as assignment time) 120 hrs Participants This online course is specially designed for students registered for Ph.D. programme in Departments /Institutes/ Colleges of SNDT Women s University and some faculty members/ph D Guides who may be interested in new trends in research field. Interested Faculty members will be invited to join as Observers. Ph. D. Students from outside SNDTWU will be admitted to this online course in place of vacant seats. Resource Persons The Course will be conducted by the professionals in the field. Admission process (for registered candidates of SNDT Women s University) 1. Register yourself for the Online Course by sending to phdonline@sndt.ac.in with an attachment of Registration Form. Please also attach your scanned fee receipt of PhD admission. 2. On submission of the Registration form, you will get an invitation from the Course teacher/admin to log in to your Moodle Account, specially created for this Online course. Please log in and explore Moodle Learning Management System (LMS). (for registered candidates of the Universities other than SNDT Women s University) 1. Send request to phdonline@sndt.ac.in with an attachment of Registration Form, scanned copy of your PhD fee receipt and marksheet of the Master degree exam. 2. On submission of the Registration form, you will get confirmation about admission. 3. You are expected to courier the form with your signature and photocopy copies of certificates attested by Head of an academic institution or a Gazetted Officer for office records once we confirm eligibility for the admission through . Pl draw the DD of Rs. 5000/- in favour of Registrar, SNDT Women s University and send it to Director, BCUD, SNDT Women s University, 1, N. Thackersey Road, Mumbai On receipt of DD and attested copies, an invitation from the Course teacher/admin to log in to your Moodle Account, specially created for this Online course. Please log in and explore Moodle Learning Management System (LMS). 4

5 Mode of offering the Course The entire course will be only through Online mode. There will be content files, lweblinks, videos uploaded throuh the LMS. Many discussions will be organized on LMS or through Blogs, in which participation is mandatory. There will be synchronous communication (live interaction) once in a week for one hour. Generally we have it on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. But it gets decided by the majority of participants through poll. Once scholars have taken admission, this poll will be conducted in the first week of the course. Pre-Course Activities 1. Register yourself for the Online Course by sending to phdonline@sndt.ac.in with an attachment of Registration Form. Please also attach your scanned fee receipt. 2. On submission of the Registration form, you will get an invitation from the Course teacher/admin to log in to your Moodle Account, specially created for this Online course. Please log in and explore Moodle Learning Management System (LMS). 3. A blog (Research Methodology for the Ph.D. scholars) is created for this Online Course, all participants are required to visit this blog regularly Pl create your own blog for this course using blogger.com. Pl invite the teachers/instructors of this course to your blog. All these blogs will be connected to the Course blog. Participants are expected to write on their blog regularly (including some assignments). You will be posting on this blog your thoughts, reflections as well as some assignments (which need to use blog specifically). 5. Resources will be posted on the Moodle Course website so that all participants get access to all the resource material. 6. There will be a One Hour Synchronous Interaction per week. The poll for the sae will be created for this activity on Moodle. Pl register your choice. 7. Some Synchronous communication will be through A-VIEW. Pl download A-VIEW software from which is free. Course methodology It is an online course conducted using Moodle as Learning Management System (LMS). The learning Modules will be posted on Course website on Moodle. Detailed course schedule is posted on the website which will give you an idea of all the activities/ assignments/project work etc. expected of you. There will be group work as well. Active participation of all the participants is very essential. Post Workshop Activities The workshop aims at facilitating the process of understanding concepts and trends in Research methodology. The participants are expected to prepare a research proposal after going through this 4-credit course. A Certificate of successful participation will be issued by the University on completion of all tasks/assignments. 5

6 Evaluation/Assessment Scheme 1. Objective Test (Multiple Choice Questions) 25% (On MOODLE, within a week) 2. Submission of the following (within 4 weeks) 75% a. Prepare a research proposal b. Prepare bibliography of atleast 20 recent references (both books and journal articles) c. Review atleast 5 research studies in the related areas. d. Use data uploaded on the Moodle Course website and using SPSS, compute given statistics and interpret. In addition there will be quizzes of objective type on Moodle. They will be announced by the respective facilitator. 6
