4 V. Qualitative Assessments CTE and Vocational: Community and labor market relevance. Present evidence of community need based on Advisory Committee input, industry need data, McIntyre Environmental Scan, McKinsey Economic Report, licensure and job placement rates, etc. Transfer and Basic Skills: Describe how your course offerings address transfer, basic skills, and program completion. Paralegals are greatly needed in the legal community and one of the few job markets that continues to grow in need rather than to decline. There is a significant need for Paralegals especially in California, and particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area where Merritt College is located. The Paralegal Program currently offers an AA in Paralegal Studies and a Certificate of Completion. In order to obtain your Paralegal Certificate, you have to complete English 1A, in addition to Parlg 1, 6, 8, 11 and 4 electives from Parlg 4, 9, 10, 12, 15, 16 and Business Law. Many students obtain their AA and transfer to 4 year schools. Further, the Paralegal Program is in the process of completion and submission of an Application for Approval by the American Bar Association (ABA). Students will then take approximately units of additional general education courses in addition to the 30 units of paralegal education courses.

5 VI. Course SLOs and Assessment Fall 2014 Number of active courses in your discipline 10 Number with SLOs 10 % SLOs/Active Courses 100% Number of courses with SLOs that have been assessed 100% % Assessed/SLOs 100% Describe types of assessment methods you are using Rubrics, Paralegal Department Meetings, Mid Terms/Final Exams, Projects, drafting/writing assignments such as Motions, Memorandum of Points and Authorities, Memoranda of Law, Declarations, Orders, Complaints, Discovery Requests etc. Describe results of your SLO assessment progress As a result of Course SLO Assessment, it has been determined that the Paralegal Department needs at least $20,000 in order to purchase computer software for PARLG 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 15. This need will be addressed through resource requests. In addition, the Merritt College Paralegal Department needs to complete its Application and approval process to be an ABA approved institution so that graduating students can be hired by all employers without restriction. This need has partially been addressed but administration support and additional resources of approximately $20,000 is needed. Further, in order to further and best assist the students, the re-wiring and furniture for computer lab P218 is needed once and for all estimated around $45,000. Should have already been installed with Measure A funds over 4 years ago. As a result of Assessment, all Paralegal Department Faculty meet to assess and analyze each Program Outcome (and course outcome) at least once a year and determine how well students are meeting each outcome, so that changes can be made to the Paralegal Department Courses. Further, each faculty do a course assessment presentation. As a result, all faculty have increased coordination with each other and increased the coordination of all assignments, instructions given etc. in each course to improve student learning. Each faculty have increased the detail of instructions given, and have increased the assignments given in order to address Student Learning Outcomes and Program Outcomes and to improve student learning. As a result of SLO Assessment, the entire Paralegal Department Faculty have coordinated the courses and also modified assignments given so that there is better coordination and flow from course to course and to increase student learning.
