1 EWING MARION KAUFFMAN FOUNDATION POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FOCUS AREA: REPORTS TO: Director of Information Technology Information Technology VP Finance and Administration DATE: November 2015 The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation ( Kauffman Foundation ) was established in the mid-1960s by the late entrepreneur and philanthropist Ewing Marion Kauffman. Based in Kansas City, Missouri, the Kauffman Foundation is among the thirty largest foundations in the United States with an asset base of approximately $2 billion. While striving to have national impact and global reach, the Foundation is deeply committed to Kansas City, as evidenced by work on initiatives that reach into neighborhoods and enrich the community and quality of life in the region. For more information about the Foundation, please visit the website at Though all major foundation donors were entrepreneurs, Ewing Kauffman was the first such donor to direct his foundation to support entrepreneurship, recognizing that his path to success could and should be achieved by many more people. The Foundation s vision is to foster a society of economically independent individuals who are engaged citizens, contributing to the improvement of their communities. In service of this vision, and in keeping with its founder s wishes, the Foundation focuses its grant making and operations on two areas: advancing entrepreneurship and improving the education of children and youth. Significant entrepreneurship programs include Kauffman FastTrac, 1 Million Cups, istart, and several other important initiatives. The Foundation supports key educational programs such as the Ewing Marion Kauffman School, Kauffman Scholars, Teach For America and Leading Educators, among others. The Foundation also conducts and supports research and policy programs aimed at helping to develop effective programs and inform policy that will best advance entrepreneurship and education. The Kauffman Foundation s reach and impact would not be possible without its vast social network of grantees, partners, experts, and practitioners. The Foundation helps cultivate these relationships by playing the role of convener, bringing together local, national, and world leaders to share innovative thinking and engage in dialog related to entrepreneurship and education. Each year, more than 60,000 people visit the Foundation s Conference Center, which provides 40,000 square feet of state-of-the-art meeting space.

2 RESPONSIBILITIES The Director of Information Technology is responsible for development and execution of the Foundation s technology strategy. In addition, the Director is responsible for oversight and operation of the Foundation s technology systems, including a grants management system and CRM. The Director will have the ability to influence and impact technology at the Foundation through development of a strategic direction. The Director will work collaboratively with all Foundation associates and contracted staff and is expected to work in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy of the Foundation. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: The Director of Information Technology will report to the VP Finance and Administration and will supervise the IT team, including infrastructure, development, and support. This requires direct oversight of Kauffman Foundation associates and management of outsourced IT vendors. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Strategy & Planning Work with the Kauffman program areas, affiliates, and other key customers to identify Foundation needs and develop and execute IT strategies aligned with those needs. Establish technology plans and priorities that balance business needs with IT best practices and internal requirements Coordinate the identification, implementation, and management of current and future technology solutions. Develop appropriate policies, procedures, and practices necessary to ensure IT is able to work within appropriate frameworks to be successful. Establish metrics and analytics measuring the effectiveness of IT and associated initiatives and projects. Maintain effective communications with internal and external customers regarding IT capabilities and strategy, as well as ensuring that Foundation management is aware of technology direction, benefits, risks and trends including infrastructure, cloud, personal devices, security concerns, and similar important topics.

3 Provide technology expertise to individual Foundation groups, departments and affiliates to assist with technology direction, needs identification, strategy consultations, research and solution advice. Establish appropriate strategy and plans to protect the intellectual property of the Foundation including development of disaster recovery and business continuity plans, security policy, and similar. Acquisition & Deployment Define appropriate decision making processes, evaluation criteria, metrics collection and performance assessment processes to enable informed selection of the most appropriate technology solutions. Work with other departments and associates to direct and perform business and process analysis in order to accurately identify needs and requirements for technology solutions. Ensure technology initiatives and projects have appropriate project management structure, development methods, and lifecycle management processes; ensure work is completed within expected cost, budget and success requirements. Define, communicate, and ensure compliance with technology standards that align with IT strategy and Foundation needs. Manage acquisition, support, maintenance, and other vendor agreements, and negotiate and manage technology related vendor relationships for all information technology needs. Direct the procurement of technology tools, services, software and devices required by associates in accordance with the Foundations policies and standards. Operational Management Direct the efficient and reliable delivery of Foundation Technology resources including all business applications, development, hardware, software, and all other IT Services. Ensure IT Team remains up-to-date and knowledgeable of industry trends and emerging technologies. Act as primary liaison for the Foundation s technology vision via regular written and in-person communications with senior management. Develop, track, and control the Information Technology annual operating and capital budgets. Ensure continuous delivery of technical services through operational management of systems, networks, business applications and other IT Services. Ensure IT systems, policies and procedures adhere to applicable laws and regulations.

4 Management and Leadership Lead information technology staff to achieve high performance through goal setting and evaluation. Manage external vendors to meet the technology goals of EMKS, while meeting stated objectives related to timeline and budget. Assign and manage IT resources as needed to provide high quality and efficient IT service delivery. Supervise recruitment, development, retention, organization and work of Foundation technical personnel resources and contracted technology staff. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education: Bachelor s degree in computer science, engineering, business administration or related field or equivalent work experience Work Experience: 10+ years IT experience with 4+ years in an IT leadership role Travel: This position will require occasional business travel. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Qualified candidates for the position of Director of Information Technology must be highly motivated, capable of self-direction, excellent leadership and be able to work collaboratively within a team environment. Candidates must exhibit a keen sense of responsibility and enjoy working with multiple demands, shifting priorities and constant change. A successful candidate profile: Demonstrated ability to work with diverse group of individuals to develop information solutions that optimally meet their needs Driven to enable business success through the appropriate use of Information Technology Strong technical skills and proven experience leading a technical team Exceptional analytical, problem solving and project management skills Experience IT frameworks such as ITIL, COBIT, ISO2000, etc. Strong customer service oriented approach with excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to maintain a calm and competent demeanor Experience with budget development and compliance Experience with evaluation and business justification of IT products Excellent written and verbal communications skills Strong desire and ability to expand knowledge
