1 BUILDING and TRANSPORTATION PATHWAYS AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES TECHNICIAN: Location: Wasilla High School AUTO TECH 1 & 2 Year 1 AUTO TECH 1 & 2 AUTO TECH 3 AUTO TECH 4 Courses need to be taken in this order; however, AUTO TECH 1&2 can be taken either Sem. 1 OR Sem. 2. Students do not have to take both years but it is recommended. The Automotive Services Technology program prepares students to gain employment and become competitive in the automotive services industry. Instruction will be provided in the diagnosis of automotive systems and service and repair procedures. This program will be recognized and sponsored in part by the Automotive Youth Education System (AYES) which is comprised of many large automobile manufacturers and supported by automotive dealers throughout the United States. Following completion of the program, students will be eligible to test for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications and many either directly enter the workforce or pursue post-secondary education and/or training. Courses lead to industry certifications, and need to be taken in sequence: Auto Services Tech 1 & Auto Services Tech 2 (taught together), Auto Services Tech 3 and Auto Services Tech 4. AVIATION: P GROUND SCH P GROUND SCH This is only a semester long course, choose either semester, not both. Private Pilot Ground School course is designed to be hands-on, covering the basic elements of Professional Piloting, Air Traffic Control, and Aviation Administration. This class will prepare students to pass the FAA knowledge test.
2 CONSTRUCTION TRADES: Year 1 CONST TRAD 1 CONST TRAD 2 Courses need to be taken in this order. Students do not have to take both years but it is recommended. The mission of the Mat-Su Construction Trade s two-year program is to prepare students to enter the workforce, union training programs, trade school or college. Students prepare for careers in Interior Design, Construction Trades, Architecture and related fields. Industry awareness and technical instruction will be provided in Health and Safety, Tool Safety, Blueprint Reading, Design, Site Selection, Technical Math, Framing, Finishing, Plumbing and Heating, Interior and Exterior Finish, Real Estate, Business and Wiring. Courses lead to industry certifications through NCCER, and must be taken in sequence: Construction Trades 1, Construction Trades 2. HYDRAULICS & DIESEL: HYDRAUL & DIESEL 3 rd PERIOD ONLY This is a yearlong, single period course. This course provides an introduction to diesel hydraulics and their operation. Basic principles of flow, pressure, and conversion of fluid power into mechanical power; relationship of Pascal s Law and relating it to the fundamentals of hydraulic principles; and identification of the components in a basic hydraulic circuit and variations of those circuits used in modern hydraulic systems.
3 OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT TECHNOLOGY (OPET): Location: Colony High School Year 1 OTDR PWR 1 OTDR PWR 2 Courses need to be taken in this order. Students do not have to take both years but it is recommended. Instruction will be provided in the diagnosis of fuel and electrical systems and service and repair procedures. In addition, students are to receive a foundation in theoretical aspects of major outdoor/industrial powered-equipment systems. Examples of serviceable equipment include All Terrain Vehicles, Blowers, Bush Cutters, Diesel Engines, Lawn Tractors, Gas Engines, Power Mowers, Personal Watercraft, Snowmobiles, etc. Following completion of the program, students will be eligible to test for certifications and may either directly enter the workforce or pursue post-secondary education and/or training. Courses must be taken in sequence: OPET 1, OPET 2. PROCESS TECHNOLOGY & INTRODUCTION TO OSHA: PROCESS TECH INTRO OSHA Process Technology is designed to give students an insight into the type of work involved in Process Technology and the skills needed to work in the Alaska Oil and Gas Industry. Process Technology is an environment of teams of people responsible for planning, analyzing, and controlling the production of products specifically as it relates to the Alaska Oil and Gas Industry. Introduction to OSHA is an introduction to the field of safety, health, and environment within the process industry. It will cover various types of plant hazards, safety and environmental systems equipment, and applicable government regulations, and industry standards. It is designed to prevent injuries, fatalities, fires, explosions or unexpected releases of hazardous materials.
4 WELDING: Locations: Colony High School -OR- Houston High School (Transportation to/from Houston Not Provided) Year 1 WELDING TECH 1 WELDING TECH 2 Courses need to be taken in this order. Students do not have to take both years but it is recommended. A series of 2 courses leading to industry certifications. This course covers the theory and basic foundation of welding to include safety and health, tools and equipment (handling and care of), shield metal arc welding, oxygen-acetylene welding, and oxygen-acetylene cutting. These courses also cover general techniques in gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and plasma arc cutting. Employability information, metallurgy, blue print reading, welding symbols and weld testing are also included. Courses must be taken in sequence: Welding 1, Welding 2. CULINARY/TOURISM PATHWAY CULINARY ARTS: CULIN ART 1 & 2 (Sem. 1) and CULIN ART 3 & 4 (Sem. 2) Courses will be taught in this order, this is a yearlong course and all 4 levels will be covered in one year. A series of 4 courses that will prepare students for a career in the culinary and hospitality industry. Courses will cover food preparation and safety, Kitchen Basics, Nutrition, Preparing Breakfast foods, Sandwiches, Salads and Garnishes, Fruits and Vegetables, Potatoes and Grains, Desserts and Baked Goods, Meat, Poultry and Seafood and Stocks, Soups and Sauces. Courses must be taken in sequence: Culinary Arts 1, Culinary Arts 2, Culinary Arts 3 and Culinary Arts 4.
5 HEALTH and HUMAN SERVICES PATHWAYS CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA): CNA CNA BLOCKED FOR 3 PERIODS This is only a semester long course but is blocked for 3 periods; choose mornings or afternoons either semester, not both. This is a 2-credit course that meets the educational training requirements for certification of a Certified Nursing Assistant in the State of Alaska. The course will train students to measure and record vital signs, provide personal care and hygiene, position, transfer and ambulate, provide unit care, and other activities of daily living. CPR and First Aid will be included. The training will enable students to work in long term care and acute care facilities. Training will include both classroom activities and clinical experiences with industry partners in hospitals, nursing homes and extended care facilities. This course is a three-hour block and, in accordance with State of Alaska regulations, includes supervised clinical experience. Students complete all components of classroom content with cumulative score of 70% in order to continue onto the industry site clinical experiences. DENTAL and MEDICAL ASSISTANT: DENTAL ASSIST MEDICAL ASSIST The Dental Assistant course prepares students to become skilled members of the dental health care team. Assistants greatly increase the efficiency of the dentist in the delivery of oral health care and are valuable members of the dental care team. The Medical Assistant course will prepare students to assist doctors with clinical and administrative duties. Assistants greatly increase the efficiency in a medical office and are valuable members of a medical office team.
6 EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION and EMERGENCY TRAUMA TEC & EMT 1: EMERGENCY COMMU EMER TRAUMA TEC & EMT 1 Emergency Communication introduces students to the technologies involved in emergency communications dispatching. Students will learn call processing, telephony, computer aided dispatch and radio communication techniques. Students will learn the fundamentals of the Incident Command System as it relates to emergency communications. Emergency Trauma Technician is an introduction to emergency medical care. Students will learn to provide assessment and care as a first responder to medical emergencies, illness, or injuries. This level of training is the next step beyond initial first aid. Students will learn the duties, limitations, and care techniques required of a certified ETT. This class will meet the required 40 hour training for ETT state certification. Emergency Medical Technician 1 (Basic) is designed to help students gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be competent, productive members of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team. The EMT Basic National Standard Curriculum Educational Model is followed. Students who take Emergency Medical Technician 1 (Basic) have varied goals: work as an EMT on an ambulance, fire department, or first responder service, work as an EMT for a business, gain medical knowledge and skills for use in very remote areas, use on a resume for further schooling in the medical field or on a resume for employment, help care better for elderly or sick family members, or simply to gain the confidence to deal with emergency situations. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY and INTRODUCTION TO PHARMACOLOGY: MED TERMNOLG INTRO PHARM These courses are offered two ways as Med Term before Pharm -OR- Pharm before Med Term, it doesn t matter the order you take them in. Medical Terminology course presents medical terminology through a combination of anatomy and physiology, word building principles, and phonetic sound like pronunciations. Content is organized according to body systems and is designed to prepare students who have interest in careers in health care or medicine. This course will help anyone going into a medical field, providing necessary information and skills for success. Introduction to Pharmacology introduces students to how drugs are organized by classifications that include their purpose, side effects, cautions, and interactions. Instruction will include lectures, labs, guest speakers, and field trips. This class is recommended to students interested in health careers such as nursing and medicine.
7 VETERINARY ASSISTANT: VET ASSISANT VET ASSISANT This is only a semester long course, choose either semester, not both. The Veterinary Assistant course will introduce students to careers in Veterinary science. Veterinary Assistants assist in a Veterinary office with a variety of tasks to increase the efficiency of the office. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS PATHWAY NETWORKING: Year 1 CISCO NETWRKG 1 CISCO NETWRKG 2 CISCO NETWRKG 3 CISCO NETWRKG 4 5 TH PERIOD ONLY Courses need to be taken in this order. Students do not have to take both years but it is recommended. The Information Technology program will help to prepare students to become successful and competitive in the hightech Information Technology industry. Students will study networking through a graduated understanding of the OSI model of networking. They will be able to analyze, test, troubleshoot, and evaluate network systems, such as local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and Internet systems or a segment of a network system. They will be able to configure routers and switches, understand IP addressing for both versions 4 and 6 and will be able to perform network maintenance to ensure networks operate correctly and optimally with minimal interruption.
8 NATURAL RESOURCES PATHWAY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT: EMERGENCY MANAG EMERGENCY MANAG This is only a semester long course, choose either semester, not both. Emergency Management Systems Incident Command course introduces students to the emergency management process. Students learn the functions of emergency management and how it operates in conjunction with FEMA in response to disasters and other emergencies. WILDLAND FIREFIGHTING and FOREST HEALTH & PROTECTION: WILD FIREFIGHT FOREST HLTH&PRO Wildland Firefighting course prepares students to work with a wildland fire crew. They will learn the methods of operation for wildland fire chainsaws and pumps and how to work safely in a wildland fire environment. Forest Health & Protection course introduces students to the concepts of natural agents such as insects, fire, wind, drought, and ice storms and their strong influence on forest ecosystem health.
9 SPORTS FITNESS PATHWAY INTRODUCTION TO FITNESS PROFESSIONS and PHYSIOLOGY OF EXERCISE & FITNESS: INTRO FIT PROF PHYS EXC/FIT Introduction to Fitness Professions introduces exercise physiology, biomechanics and kinesiology in regards to sport and safe exercise. Prescription and Assessment of exercise for both individuals and groups will be covered. Students will explore careers and professional development opportunities in the sports and fitness industry. Physiology of Exercise & Fitness introduces anatomy, physiology, and injuries most commonly encountered on the athletic field, gymnasium, or sports arena. Techniques used in the initial management and rehabilitation of those injuries are also covered. This course is recommended for students interested in fitness and sports medicine. OTHER OFFERINGS AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: Location: Colony High School AM SIGN LANG 1 AM SIGN LANG 2 Courses need to be taken in this order. Students do not have to take both semesters but it is recommended. American Sign Language 1&2 is an introduction to American Sign Language with major emphasis on vocabulary acquisition, grammar, and syntax. Units introduce the culture of the Deaf Community. Student participation and good attendance are the critical elements to successfully complete this course.
