The research, for which interviews and fieldwork are underway, is a social history of the film industry. It also highlights the ways in which cinema and Pakistani history, culture and society are related through an analysis of films. It seeks to position cinema in relation to the social, political and economic changes that have marked Pakistan s short but tumultuous history. How does cinema reflect these changes? How did it influence them? The aim of the research can be summarized as follows: 1. To serve as a source of much needed reliable information about the cinematic heritage of Pakistan for academics and the wider public. 2. To provide critical analyses of the strengths and weaknesses, achievements and failures of the industry as a whole, as well as its relationship with Pakistani society and history. 3. To raise concern among cultural policy makers and those involved in cultural heritage about the plight facing Pakistan s film industry which, despite its remarkable achievements since the 1950s, is in crisis. 4. To stand alone as an excellently laid out, aesthetically pleasing work of cultural and visual art that integrates film art and rare film stills with a highly readable and thought provoking narrative about a much- neglected aspect of Pakistani history. 3

4 There is already interest from publishers in this book and it is hoped that the research will lead to a number of further projects including a documentary and a larger initiative concerning the preservation of cultural heritage. Also involved in designing and implementing the political science and Humanities Majors. This process involved an entire review of the curriculum in all three Majors. Launched initiative to inform students of the importance of humanities and social sciences in the present day ADMINISTRATION I have a wide range of administrative responsibilities at the university at school and departmental level. I have been heading the department for the last four years and overseen major changes in the department particularly around the area of curriculum reform and the switch to the semester system. Taken on responsibility of heading the largest and most diverse department in the university Supervised the development and reform of the curriculum for Humanities, political science and anthropology/sociology Overseen entire course restructuring for semester transition Spearheaded the introduction of four new Majors Anthropology/Sociology, Humanities, History and Political Science Supervised foreign and national recruitment of faculty. This involved advertisement write up, placement, interviewing, negotiating, preparation of contracts, ensuring visas are processed in time, arranging campus accommodation Overseen departmental budget preparation and utilization 4

5 Increased linkages with foreign universities through foreign faculty speaker series Put in place a departmental student advisory system Dealt with day to day administrative issues including student and faculty complaints, curriculum clarifications, ensuring sufficient course allocation, staff and faculty evaluations Ensured adequate provision of core courses for entire university Designed departmental website and edited content for site Prepared material on department for the Board of Trustees meetings and the Marketing Department. Have recently started looking at popular culture in Pakistan particularly Pakistani cinema and society. Two research projects are on- going. The first concerns a socio- history of the Pakistan film industry. Fieldwork on this project is underway with a final manuscript to be ready 5
