4 Scott Swain Emory College, Class of 2014 Houston, Texas Majors: Biology and Chemistry Activities: Emory Wesley Fellowship, Volunteer Emory, Intramurals Atlanta EMORY COLLEGE OXFORD COLLEGE My freshman seminar was about robotics and a little introductory to programming, and we worked with robots to achieve various tasks as well as use graphic manipulation. The small class size was good, even though most of my classes are relatively small. I was able to connect well with my professor, and in fact she pushed me to submit my final research paper for the class for a research award at Emory. Your College Career, Your Choice Your First Two Years Emory wants students who are active, passionate learners. But we know that one size doesn t fit all. That s why two distinctive undergraduate options await you here Emory College and Oxford College. Both are grounded in the liberal arts tradition and its emphasis on broad-based learning and intellectual rigor. Both stress excellent instruction from full-time faculty dedicated to exceptional teaching as well as pathbreaking research and scholarship. Both enjoy the resources and reputation of Emory, a top 20 university located in one of the country s most welcoming and vibrant cities, Atlanta. As an Emory undergraduate, you can choose to begin your education at Emory College of Arts and Sciences, our four-year undergraduate program on the main campus, or you can start at Oxford College, our freshman and sophomore undergraduate program on the University s original campus, 38 miles east of Atlanta. The different characters of the two schools allow students on both campuses to reap the benefits of Emory s unparalleled education while choosing the environment that s best for them. Oxford College At Oxford College, intimate classes, a strong sense of community, and leadership opportunities rare for first- and second-year students are the norm. Oxford s curriculum stresses critical, holistic thinking and a seamless transition to Emory College or the University s undergraduate schools of business or nursing in the junior year. Emory College Emory College students have the vast resources of the University and its Atlanta hometown at close reach. Our seven graduate and professional schools are all located within walking distance of the college, giving undergraduates easy access to additional programs, libraries, and facilities. Emory is a liberal arts college nestled in a large metropolitan university. Which Emory undergraduate college is the right fit for you? You decide. However you choose to begin at Emory, you can be sure of an educational experience that arms you with bountiful resources and programs to help you reach your college and life goals. Nicole Lee Oxford College, Class of 2010 School of Nursing, Class of 2012 Charleston, South Carolina Major: Nursing Activities: Peer Assistant Leader, Oxford Dance Company, Asian Culture Club I decided to enroll in the School of Nursing because I found my passion for nursing in my time at Oxford. Continuing with this passion at Emory only seemed fit because the School of Nursing would encompass many of the qualities of Oxford that I fell in love with, such as the diversity, small size, and challenging academic curriculum. The School of Nursing also has state-of-theart technology, programs, and resources to push the potentials of their students and create the top nurses of the future. When I graduate, I hope to work in pediatrics, either as a nurse practitioner or researcher. 5 emory university undergraduate programs 6

5 left: exploring anatomy at Oxford; below: group study at Emory Be Inspired Amazing Resources In addition to its seven graduate and professional schools and five libraries, Emory has centers and partners that will give you new ways to bring your ideas to light. Here are a few: n The Carter Center n Center for Behavioral Neuroscience n Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library n Centers for Disease Control and Prevention n Rollins Research Center n Oxhouse Science Center n Office of University-Community Partnerships n Schwartz Center for Performing Arts n Yerkes National Primate Research Center n Michael C. Carlos Museum n Whitehead Research Center n Winship Cancer Institute Glenn Newman Goizueta Business School, Class of 2012 Augusta, Georgia Majors: Business and Economics Activities: Resident Adviser, Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir I enrolled in Goizueta because of the great resources, the great B-school program, and lots of diversity. I have loved certain classes and didn t love others, and it has taught me to take more of the ones I love and see what kind of career I can pursue in that field. When I graduate I d like to do public accounting or human capital consulting. ry ps Emory students start at one of our two liberal arts colleges and spend their junior and senior years studying at Emory College, the Business School, or the School of Nursing. That means you have time to explore your interests and specialize in areas that inspire you. Our experienced faculty and wide resources will give you the tools you need to set your best goals and reach them. Liberal Arts Strength Students interested in the liberal arts can spend their first two years at Oxford College or Emory College, and spend their last two years at Emory, to earn a BA or BS. Liberal arts curriculum broadens students perspectives with a range of academic ideas and emphasizes thoughtful inquiry, strong writing, and effective communication skills valuable in any major or career. Business Experience After the sophomore year, students can study at Goizueta Business School to earn a bachelor of business administration (BBA). Goizueta trains principled business leaders, and offers concentrations in accounting, information systems and operations management, finance, marketing, and strategy and management consulting. Faculty Connection At Emory you ll benefit firsthand from each professor s expertise. Emory faculty members teach our students from freshman seminar to the senior thesis. At Oxford College, the faculty/student ratio allows for an exceptional amount of one-on-one time, and at Emory College, nearly every faculty member is involved in an advising system that assigns three students to each professor, matching the professor s discipline with the students interests. As a result, our students benefit from the experience and knowledge of some of the world s best minds. Our faculty choose Emory because they want to engage in the intellectual stimulation that comes from working with undergraduates. Classes Designed for Learning average class size: 18 student/faculty ratio: 7/1 most classes have fewer than 30 students all faculty members have the highest degree in their field Honors Emory College students can graduate with honors if they conduct intensive research on original subjects of their choice and then defend their research before a faculty committee. Intellectual Leaders Teach at Emory With stellar faculty such as Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Trethewey and famed primatologist Frans de Waal, Emory has a singular reputation for excellent teaching and research. Adding to the luster of our faculty are former US president Jimmy Carter and visiting scholars such as author Salman Rushdie, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Spano. Nursing Leadership Students interested in nursing can study at the School of Nursing after the sophomore year to earn a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Nursing students learn in clinical and classroom settings, and build on their nursing education with service-learning projects. The School of Nursing offers concentrations in nutrition, human genetics, community health, and pharmacology. Engaged Learning Class work coupled with real-world experience is what students find in engaged learning courses. Students use the knowledge they ve gained in class and apply it in community centers, urgent care sites, and afterschool programs throughout Atlanta. The Carnegie Foundation has honored Emory by classifying it as one of the first schools in the nation to receive its Community Engagement distinction, reserved for institutions that show leadership in exposing students to and engaging them in the larger community. In 2008 Emory was given the highest federal recognition a university can receive for its commitment to community the Presidential Award for General Community Service. 7 emory university undergraduate programs 8

Make a Career Plan The career centers at Oxford and Emory provide guidance and preparation for all stages of a student s college career, from choosing a major to transitioning into life after college, whether toward graduate or professional school, or that first job. Career Services At Oxford, Counseling and Career Services aids students in deciding a major, choosing a career, finding an internship, and writing resumes and cover letters. Students can take advantage of the Oxford Mentor Program, campuswide events, and tailored career workshops to explore careers and postgraduation plans. These services dovetail nicely with those of the Emory Career Center, which offers preprofessional counseling along with career testing and assessment, resume critiques, mock interviews, and workshops to sharpen students skills for the workplace. The center also hosts career fairs and on-campus recruitment opportunities so students can land those internships or first jobs with ease. Preprofessional Advising Students interested in a preprofessional path can find targeted guidance at Oxford and Emory. Oxford offers preprofessional advising for students interested in medicine, nursing, law, business, or pharmacy to help students select courses, choose a major, and plan for the postgraduate application process. 7 left: performing community service at Emory Extend Your Reach Through research projects, internships, and study abroad, Emory students develop classroom knowledge in the laboratory of real life. Engaged Students In the National Survey of Student Engagement, Emory undergraduates reported that n 86 percent of seniors had participated in community service or volunteer work n 100 percent of seniors had taken foreign language course work, and 50 percent participated in study abroad programs n 40 percent worked on a research project with a faculty member outside of course or program requirements by their senior year Rachel Reiff Emory College, Class of 2012 Portland, Oregon Majors: Biology and Music Activities: Violin, Emory Symphony Orchestra, Alpha Phi Omega, ChEmory I work in the laboratory of Dr. Randy Hall in the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology, and I absolutely love research. I study a specific receptor in the brain that is linked to the disease schizophrenia. Although I learn a lot by attending lectures, taking classes, and reading textbooks, there is no match for actually forming hypotheses, solving problems, and analyzing data with my own hands in the laboratory. Research At Emory, research isn t reserved only for graduate students and faculty, and it s not just in the sciences. More than 40 percent of undergraduates even first-year students participate in research with graduate students or faculty. Research gives them the chance to apply a higher level of scholarship to fields that spark their interest. Internships By the time Emory University students graduate, the majority have already joined the ranks of the working world through internships. Students can choose from nearly 1,000 opportunities in Atlanta and 7,600 others throughout the country. Popular internships complement classroom learning with real experience that builds resumes and boosts marketability. n 65 percent of seniors had participated in a practicum, internship, field co-op or experience, or clinical assignment Study Abroad Half of Emory students study abroad for a semester, summer, or year in programs that span the globe. Students can choose from more than 100 programs, and Emory s study abroad options are well-structured, so the educational value is measurable. Emory lets participants earn direct credit for courses and carry their financial aid and merit scholarships with them into the program. 8 left: Centennial Olympic Park, Atlanta Have Fun Getting Involved Our students work hard and are motivated, but take time to have fun, too. Getting involved in student organizations, enjoying living on campus, and exploring Atlanta offer a balance to academics. Student Clubs and Organizations Emory and Oxford students demonstrate their talent for leadership and strong school spirit through involvement in more than 300 clubs, teams, and organizations between both campuses. Here are just a few. Spirit Council Outdoor Emory The Emory Wheel (Emory student newspaper) Emory College Council Wesley Fellowship Hillel Alternative Spring Break Club Crew Teams WMRE Interfraternity Council Leadership Oxford Dooley s Dolls Voices of Praise Gospel Choir ChemOx Ultimate Frisbee Club Community Leader Council Guitar and Mandolin Society The Spokesman (Oxford student newspaper) Poetry Club OxAppella In the 2009 National Survey of Student Engagement it was reported that: n 83 percent of Oxford students say their college emphasizes attending campus events and activities, compared to 65 percent at other colleges. n More than 50 percent of seniors at Emory College spend more than five hours a week participating in cocurricular activities, compared to 24 percent at other colleges. Amy Beth Willis Oxford College, Class of 2011 Murfreesboro, Tennessee Majors: Sociology Activities: Co-founder and President of Oxfam Oxford (social justice club on campus), Co-President of Wesley Fellowship, Volunteer Oxford East Village is a great place to live. The rooms are spacious, and the facilities are wonderful. I appreciate the green aspects of the LEED-certified building, too. Oxford is a wonderful community of diverse people. The diverse community creates an open atmosphere of people seeking to understand other cultures and ways of thinking. My best friends are people who are different than me, and I wouldn t change a thing. It is a special place where I feel at home. Intermural, Club, and Varsity Sports Emory s eighteen varsity teams are ranked among the best in NCAA Division III and have earned twelve NCAA national championships. Oxford s four varsity teams also have impressive records, including four national tennis championships. If you d rather show your spirit through intramural and club sports, these groups boast some of the largest memberships at Emory. Living on Campus At Emory College, two-thirds of students live on campus, and all first-year and second-year students live in residence halls. Upperclass students can choose to live off campus, but many prefer the sense of community that on-campus living provides. A new freshman living complex is under way on the Atlanta campus with ten energy-efficient halls to be built during the next few years. The newest of these, Longstreet-Means, is a LEED Silver building that incorporates water-conservation methods. The hall has ample community and study space on each floor, and a great room with a gas fireplace. Its residents spend each year examining a theme that involves them in activities on campus and in the community to broaden perspectives. At Oxford, all students live on campus, and everyone eats at Lil s, the campus dining complex, giving students, faculty, and staff a common place to come together and a strong sense of community. Within each living complex, Oxford offers students opportunities to interact, become leaders in the community, and attend both social and educational programs. Oxford s newest residence hall is East Village, a LEED Gold building that includes green features such as a system that reclaims storm water. The layout of the complex emphasizes community with its many student lounges and study areas, a fitness room, and a demonstration kitchen that is large enough for groups and cooking classes. Gabrielle Wolozin Emory College, Class of 2014 Atlanta, GA Majors: Marketing and Economics Activities: Bizenture Team Member, Community Assisted Debate through the Barkley Forum, Hillel Freshman and Fund-raising Committee Member, Pre-Law Society The best thing about living in Longstreet-Means is the access to the people who want to be emerged in global cultures. I have access to a vast range of monthly programs that incorporate diversity by bringing together global leaders inside and outside of Emory from the leaders on campus to the leaders of the world such as the general consul of Japan. Besides global diversity, I love having access to the best hotspots around campus within five minutes walking distance from my dorm! Enjoying Atlanta Atlanta is the cultural, technological, financial, and health care center of the Southeast a cosmopolitan city that offers many ways to work, play, and explore. Downtown Atlanta is just a few miles from the green, historic neighborhood that Emory College calls home, and just forty-five minutes away for Oxford students. With a population of more than five million, Atlanta is rich with a mix of diverse culture, entertainment, and the arts. With one of the largest concentrations of Fortune 500 companies in the nation, the city offers access to opportunities for internships, research, and jobs after graduation. Ranked by students as one of the best college towns in the United States, Atlanta has one of the largest college student populations in the country, with more than forty institutions of higher learning. And believe it or not, Atlanta s temperate climate means it s often warm enough to wear shorts in February. Lots to Do in the City n Go to a Braves game n Visit the High Museum of Art n Hear music at the Variety Playhouse n Smell the roses at the Botanical Garden n Shop in Buckhead n See a play at the Alliance Theatre n Eat at one of the many great restaurants in town n Wander through Virginia Highland n Watch the whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium 13 emory university undergraduate programs 14

The class was around fifteen or sixteen students, so we each had the opportunity to make presentations about certain advertisements we found interesting as well as the weekly readings.
