2 Canadian Quality Assurance Activities and Highlights for CQA drug use policy was managed to accommodate the prudent and judicial use of Penicillin The use of Pen G (new U.S. withdrawal requirements) The use of Pen V (required modification to the CQA drug use policy) MPC attended participated in meeting with Health Canada and the Veterinary Drug Directorate regarding antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance.
3 Canadian Quality Assurance Changes to Drug Policy 1. Increased emphasis to antimicrobial resistance. The continued use and funding for the Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (CIPARS). 2. National Efforts to Conserve the Effectiveness of Existing Antibiotics In Both Human and Veterinary Medicine Class 1 and Class 2 Antibiotics 3. Strengthening our Industries Drug use Regulatory Framework for Veterinary Medicines with a goal of: Encouraging practices that reduce the use of antibiotics. The strengthening of rules related to the importation of antibiotics under the Own Use Provision and Active and Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API s). 4. Committing to Increased Investment in Research
4 Canadian Quality Assurance Canadian Ractopamine-Free Certification Program Hylife was the first to come onto the program. All of their farms have gone through the program in Maple Leaf told producer to stop using Ractopamine by December 1, Many of their customers are now sending Council their Canadian Ractopamine-Free Certification Program On-Going Annual Assessment as part of their CQA Validation report paperwork.
5 Created a H.R. Strategy and Action Plan Two Key Objectives 1. To Brand Manitoba s Pork Industry as a Desirable Career Choice. 2. To Increase Regional Applicants To Job Positions.
6 Conducted an industry survey from swine care providers to determine key attributes why they enjoy working in the swine industry. We used survey information to develop key messages for material such as pamphlets, post cards, banners and video with a goal of attracting qualified individuals with a high probability of them working within the industry long term. Conducted a photo and video shoot at the Farm and Food Discovery Center to produce image stock for pamphlets, post cards, banners and video. Produced a HR video targeting high school students and people who are unemployed with a message that they consider the swine industry as a career. Placed print and radio ads in Winnipeg, southern and northern Manitoba
7 We upgraded MPC s career website with new photos with a goal of showing what it s like to work on a swine farm. On the career page, we posted job descriptions of all the positions that involve taking care of swine. We created a career button on the first page of our website. We organized jobs based on direct animal care, jobs that support primary production and jobs that involve pork processing. We attended career fairs in Brandon, Winnipeg, Dauphin and Winkler and worked with Ag in the Classroom for the development of an exclusive agriculture career fair.
8 Education We worked with the Assiniboine Community College to finalize the upgrade of the pork production technician apprenticeship program and to promote the fall 2014 uptake. It should be noted that the provincial government is promoting uptake by providing employers $20,000 per student in tax credits. The first uptake provided industry with nearly $360,000 in tax incentives. A second uptake is scheduled for this fall.
9 Immigration Last year s AGM produced a resolution that allowed MPC to investigate ways of improving the access of temporary foreign workers. We acquired information in how to facilitate immigration processes but then found out accreditation was needed to help a producer. We looked into developing a databased that would hold resumes of foreign workers but then found out from the provincial government that MPC did not qualify as a recruiter. MPC looked for qualified individuals who could help complete Labor Market Impact Assessments and who could also conduct recruitment. We identified 3 individuals suitable in providing assistance to producers.
10 Immigration MPC wrote a letter to Prime Minister Harper indicating the importance of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and explained in detail why it was necessary. In that letter, we supported the processing industry ability to maintain the use of the temporary foreign worker program. MPC met up with Minister Jason Kenney, and again explained our industries dependence on the Temporary Foreign worker program and further explained why it is needed.
11 Workplace Health and Safety We conducted and finalized extensive air quality assessments on several Manitoba swine farms within different seasons. Results obtained from the assessments revealed that our farms are compliant for H2S levels.
