26 Engineering (Study Abroad) BEng: H101, MEng: H104 The world i hrinking and with growth in many international economie employer are increaingly looking for graduate with international awarene. For over 20 year, Lancater Univerity ha offered a ucceful exchange cheme with univeritie in the USA and Autralia. All our Engineering coure offer our tudent a chance to pend their econd year immering themelve in the cultural and ocial life of another country, gaining unforgettable and rewarding life experience and an inight into engineering in a different country. Student need to be well prepared academically in order to make the witch to the international univerity ytem; therefore candidate are required to obtain good reult in their firt year of tudy (60% and above). Unlike other univeritie, the year abroad i credited a part of the Lancater degree meaning that it add no additional year of tudy to the degree and tudent join back up with their cla mate after their year abroad. We have worked cloely with our partner intitution to make ure our tudent cover a imilar yllabu and receive a imilar level of academic upport a they would here at Lancater. Every effort i made to minimie the culture hock and the univerity can offer advice about inurance, via, money and other practical conideration. Lancater Univerity will waive 85% of your tuition fee for the year abroad for tudent admitted in 2014/15. There are no additional tuition fee payable to your overea univerity. Pleae ee for more information. Student Profile I never imagined in my wildet dream when I decided to tudy at Lancater that I would pend my 2nd year in the USA and the ummer between my 3rd and 4th year gaining work experience at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland! I pent my year abroad at Montana State Univerity. The town wa mall, but I wa urpried at how eaily people took me under their wing and helped me ettle into my new urrounding friendly i an undertatement! I wa able to learn to ki, play American Football, viit a friend on a imilar tudy abroad year from Lancater in Toronto at Spring Break, and even indulge in a pot of fihing and hunting out in the mountain during Thankgiving. The lecture and module I took were intereting and have come in handy ince. It wa intereting to ee how other people look at engineering, and compare them to my experience up to that point. It i a time I will never, ever forget. Oliver Booth 4th Year MEng Engineering

28 Indutrial Experience We actively encourage tudent to take time out of their degree to complete period of time in indutry, typically 12 to 15 month paid employment. Thee indutrial opportunitie can be arranged in conjunction with the univerity, direct with companie or though the Engineering Development Trut Year In Indutry cheme. Alongide CV enhancement and increaed employability propect, we have alo found that tudent who complete a year in indutry return with increaed motivation for the remainder of their coure having been able to put their learning o far into practice. Our trong indutry link from large corporate to mall local companie mean that we will be able to ait you to find a uitable and rewarding placement in a ector that interet you for your future career. A a tudent undertaking a year in indutry placement, you ll typically receive a alary of around 15,000 p.a. with many tudent alo receiving funding from the company to upport ubequent year of tudy.

29 27/28 Indutrial Project MEng tudent alo participate on indutrial project during their third and fourth year. Thee are real-life company problem, which whilt non-buine critical, could till afford the companie involved meaningful time and progre. Again, our link with companie mean that we can ource excellent challenging and contructive project which are mutually beneficial to the companie and tudent involved. In the pat, project have involved: Build and tet of an aerodynamic-enhancing ytem for HGV; Contribution to teering wheel deign for the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car; Conceptual deign of a diamond wire ubea pipe cutter; Maximiing electricity from olar energy in mall-cale intallation; Heat ditribution invetigation for a ga afety product; Production proce improvement in micromanufacturing in developing countrie; Simulation and deign recommendation for airport vehicular luggage ytem Student Profile Loren Wright i pending a year in the technical department at CERN working on cryotat for particle accelerator a part of the CERN Technical Student programme. The whole experience ha been incredibly exciting, from working with ome of the world mot intelligent people to living in a beautiful and new environment. I didn t think I d be ucceful in obtaining the placement with it being uch a pretigiou place, o I wa over the moon and couldn t wait to tart! The LHC ha been generating data for the pat few year in order to find the Higg boon. But now it ha it i taking a well earned ret and in the meantime Loren i helping to increae it energy reach for when it return. During the break (known a Long Shutdown 1 or LS1), the interconnection will be repaired on 10,000 magnet. To do o they need to punch a hole in the thermal hield around the magnet at the interconnection. All the weld will then be replaced with bolt for future eae of acce and maintenance. However no current hole punch i mall enough to fit while having enough force to puncture the hield, and uing a hand drill i both awkward and time cotly, hence a new hole punch wa required. The tak for deigning thi fell to Loren. For the deign, we ran into a few problem; I had to do a lot of tre analyi and modifying of the original deign in order to reduce tre intenitie a we need each hole punch to do around 1000 cycle, and therefore cannot have extreme platiciation within the material a thi would lead to earlier failure. Thi meant employing everal technique uch a filleting harp edge and reducing large jump in material thickne through the component. The deign itelf i now complete and the technical drawing have been approved for manufacture, o now it i jut a cae of liaiing with French upplier over ordering ome of the component! Loren Wright 3rd Year MEng Mechanical Engineering
