1 Introduction to school counseling (2 credits/compulsory) Course Code: CED 201 Course Title: Introduction to School Counseling. Number of Credits: 2 credits Course Duration: Two hours per week for 15 weeks (30hrs) Lecturer s Name: ODEBODE, Aminat Adeola. Consultation Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 1-3pm Course content: Concept of counseling and interrelated concepts. Importance of counseling. Placement needs for counseling in schools, counseling services: orientation, placement, appraisal, information, educational and persona-social etc. Course Justification: The knowledge of this course is necessary as students need to be furnished with the knowledge of the profession, its processed and importance. They also need to know the necessity of the profession at all levels in Nigerian schools so as to be able to handle any problem when faced with it. Course outline Week 1; Concept of Guidance and Counseling. Week 2; Guidance, Counseling and Psychotherapy. Week 3; Historical background of Guidance and Counseling. Week 4; Guidance and Counseling in modern time. Week 5; Guidance and Counselling development in Nigeria Week 6; Guidance and Counselling in schools. Week 7; Relationship between counseling and other school guidance personnel.

Week 12; Importance of counseling. Week 13; Guidance and Counseling services Week 14; Concept of inventories. Week 15; REVISION/GENERAL OVERVIEW. COURSE JUSTIFICATION. Guidance counseling is paramount to education system in Nigeria, thus, there is the need for those entering the helping profession area to be familiar with the knowledge of the course in order to help them develop the right attitudes and skills to counseling practices in schools. COURSE Objectives: At the end of the course, students should be able to;- * Explain the concept of guidance, counseling and other interrelated concepts. * Distinguish between the terms guidance, counseling and psychotherapy. * Discuss the development of guidance in Nigeria. * Identify the need of counseling in schools. * Highlight the importance of counseling. * List the roles and functions of counselors in school. * Identify and enumerate the importance of counseling services * Identify and enumerate the uses of inventories. Course Requirements: - This is a compulsory course for all students of counselor Education. Attendance at lectures is compulsory. At least 75% attendance record is mandatory for a student to be qualified to sit for the examination at the end of the semester. Methods of Grading S/N TYPE SCORE % 1. 3 4. Total 100 Course Delivery Strategy. Face-face method of lecture will be used as well as tutorial sessions and review of study questions class discussions/presentation will also be adopted. Week 1 concept of Guidance and Counseling Objective: At the end of the lesson, student should be able to -Explain the term guidance and counseling. - Discuss the similarities between the two terms. - Distinguish between the two terms. Description. This week s lecture will set the basis for the entire semester s work by finding out the meaning of guidance and counseling. It will also bring to limelight the similarities and differences between the two terms. 1. According to your understanding, define the terms guidance and counseling. 2. Counseling has been variously termed the heart, the hub and the wheel in which guidance moves, discuss. Justify the differences and similarities between guidance and counseling. 1. Objective: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to justify the need for establishing guidance and counseling in schools. Description: The lecture of this week will focus on the need for the establishment and organization of guidance and counseling programme in Nigeria schools.
