2 Chapter Reporter 1st Quarter 2010 New Financial Literacy Tool Helps Young Adults Become A comprehensive financial literacy tool is now available to assist students, young adults, parents and teachers enhance their understanding of financial issues. FoolProof is a turnkey, Web-based resource featuring over 100 video vignettes of young adults sharing situational lessons about finances. Used by over 75 credit unions nationally and half a dozen state leagues, including Georgia, FoolProof has six learning modules to address different audiences: FoolProof for High Schools: Used by teachers in the classroom, this program has nine 45-minute instruction sessions, meets education standards, includes tests, tracks students and has a high level of interactivity. FoolProof for Parents: Parents and grandparents can interact with children at home. This program starts at the credit union Web site. FoolProof Solo: Specifically for college-age adults, this program has over 70 videos and can include a credit union logo and link on the Web site. Information Edge: This program is similar to an online newspaper, but features videos, podcasts and breaking news, all related to personal finance. CUHQ: A portal with podcasts, videos and information to help young adults sift through the plethora of financial information available. FoolProof Workplace: Designed for entry-level workers, this program can be used for SEG new-hire training and for trade schools, and gives every participant the opportunity to join a credit union. Credit unions interested in adopting this interactive financial literacy program can get started for a nominal fee. To view information about FoolProof, visit or contact Dan Denning at (770) Invest in America is a credit union member enhancement program aimed at helping credit unions increase both membership and satisfaction, while providing a stimulus for the U.S. economy. This exclusive program provides credit unions with the power to create real member value with substantial discounts from U.S.-based companies. With the Invest in America program, all eligible current and new credit union members have access to valuable offers from GM and Chrysler. Why Your Voice is Important to Credit Unions With the 2008 elections overwhelmingly putting democrats in leadership roles, and with the effects of the financial collapse, a pro-consumer push has been seen on Capitol Hill. Any industry that deals with consumers even one with a good reputation like credit unions is in the crosshairs and likely to find congressional actions that will impact the way business is done. During this Congress, credit unions will see legislation introduced or moving on issues like data breach, interchange restriction legislation, credit card legislation, overdraft/courtesy pay and possible usury caps. Possible changes to the business lending caps placed on credit unions and the potential for a new regulatory agency known as the Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA) are also being considered. It is vital that credit unions and those who work within the credit union industry send a loud and clear message to Congress on behalf of the credit union perspective. What can you do to help? When the GCUA Government Influence Team sees that one of the issues moving is at a critical stage, they produce a Call to Action that is sent to all affiliated credit union CEOs and Grassroots Liaisons for their use in educating all credit union staff and volunteers. Please take the few minutes needed to follow the action steps described in the communication. If you are asked to send an , the Grassroots System that GCUA uses is very simple: Click on the link to find a message that clearly articulates the position credit unions are being asked to express. If every credit union advocate would take the time to respond, the grassroots strength of credit unions could change how the legislation impacts our industry and those we serve. We believe that there will be a greater need to call on the Grassroots network in 2010, so please be on the alert for these important Calls to Action and be prepared to respond and share the information with your colleagues. If you have questions, please contact any member of the Government Influence Team: Cindy Connelly, Mike Culbertson or Brandee Bickle. Credit unions that sign up for this free program receive: Free marketing kits, including creative development and production The latest program updates sent directly to the credit union point person Access to special offers and discounts that can be extended to members on top of base program benefits Access to credit union level sales data addresses of members who have requested an authorization code who have not yet purchased a vehicle. These can be used for credit union follow up and cross marketing purposes (available upon request). To participate in Invest in America, visit and go to the Partner Center, then click Credit Union Sign Up Forms. Check your for monthly updates on the program. 2
