3 Prophetic Leadership in the Public Square Monday, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Speaker: Larry Mercer, PhD Today s societal and economic changes are demanding that church and community leaders develop a more comprehensive approach to addressing the increasingly complex need of the communities they serve. This session will examine why prophetic leaders are needed beyond the pulpit. The Holistic Ministry Framework to Poverty Monday, 1:30-4:45 p.m. & 5:00-7:30 p.m. Trainer: Steve Corbett This session lays the foundation for understanding the appropriate goals and strategies for working in low-income communities. It addresses the following key questions in Christian Economic Development including: What causes poverty? and why this question matters? What harm can come from doing relief when the situation calls for development? Should development be based upon people s needs and/or their assets? Who determines what kind of development is done and how it is implemented? How should the local church respond to poverty? Although this course focuses on economic development, it provides an introduction and orientation to highlyrelational and holistic church-based ministry. Economic Development: Empowering the Poor through Asset Creation, Job Training, and Housing Tuesday, 9:00 a.m - 12:00 noon & 1:30-4:30 p.m. Trainer: Lance Wescher This session provides a foundation for working with low-income individuals to address many of the challenges that they face. It provides an overview of poverty profiles in the United States. It also identifies and evaluates the primary forms of microeconomic intervention strategies that exist within the church or community faith organization. The primary questions addressed are: What are the causes of poverty in the United States? How can a church teach financial literacy and help promote asset accumulation through Individual Development Accounts? What role can a church play in developing job skills for potential workers? What are the different challenges and strategies for helping people find affordable housing? Influencing Power and Policy Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon Trainer: Stanley Carlson-Thies, PhD Public policy decisions influence, for better or for worse. They sometimes even create the problems your neighbors and neighborhoods face that your ministry seeks to overcome. Limits on how your community-serving ministry can operate and on its access to public funds are determined by public policy. Actually dealing with problems may require advocacy to government and not only services for the poor. So what are the crucial government institutions and public policies that are part of the solution or part of the problem? Which ones shouldn t you overlook? How can you influence the decisions that shape the changes you are trying to accomplish? This session provides an introduction to the public policy context that communityserving faith-based organizations cannot ignore because it shapes the people to whom you minister and it shapes how you can minister to them. SUMMIT SPONSORS SUMMIT Synopses An intensive and highly interactive learning program for leaders of teams and organizations Organizing Community Transformation Wednesday, 2:00-5:00 p.m. Trainer: Mark Warren, PhD This session will highlight the role of faith-based organization in revitalizing low-income communities. The first part of the session will identify the distinctive elements of community organizing, comparing it to better-known service delivery approaches. The second part will discuss the faith bases of faith-based organizing, helping participants learn how to connect the beliefs and institutions of faith communities to organizing. The third part of the session highlights strategies that connect leaders across lines of faith, race and class and that build alliances between faithbased and more secular-based organizations. The session will end by identifying practical steps that leaders can take to foster faith-based organizing in their home institutions. Funding the Mission or Chasing the Money? Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon Trainers: Alyson Parham and Sherrye Willis Faith-based entities need public and private dollars to support their community/economic development programs. Sometimes, leaders are tempted to pursue grants for the sake of getting more dollars in the door even if this requires ignoring the mission of the organization. This session provides an overview of an effective mission-led, grant seeking process. Designed for people with little or no experience preparing grants, participants will learn the 4-R process for pursuing grant opportunities as well as the pitfalls associated with strictly chasing the money. Financing Your Vision through Business Entrepreneurship Thursday, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Trainer: Jim Holley This dynamic session explores cutting edge entrepreneurial financial development strategies to bring your ministry vision and community economic development initiative into reality. Session will highlight business models for corporate partnerships, financing models, and engaging your church membership in business entrepreneurship. Ministry Plan Presentations Funders Panel Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. This final session is created to give the leaders in attendance the opportunity to connect with funders and practice presenting their ministry programs to the funding community. The session requires each leader (or team) to present a 5-7 minutes community/economic development program action plan (that they prepared during the Summit) to a panel of funders. The funders will provide presentation feedback and program recommendations. SUMMIT PARTNERSHIP
