3 Tiling suggestions 1. Support. The constructive elements which are covered by tiles must have certain technological patterns which make them compatible with the materials and tiling techniques of ceramic tiles. To achieve a successful tiling, we will diagnose the support or surface by considering: - The stability of the basis or structural element on which the covering is to be settled. -The compressibility of the intermediate layers that either grant those functions belonging to ceramic coverings (levelling layers, regulation, separation, and desolidazation) or add complementary functions to the covering system (waterproofing layers, thermal or acoustic isolation, load distribution, protection, drainage, radiant heating.) - Plenitude, cohesion, water absorption, texture, chemical compatibility and conditions of the tiling surface on which grip materials are to be applied. - It is very important to respect the appropriate setting and maturing time of the support so it can correctly hold the load and prevent thus possible strains and structure movements which could be transmitted to higher layers. - The surface to be covered must be plain, dry, free of grease, oil, and dust, and must also be suitably stable. OUTDOORS SUPPORT Outdoor tiling requires resistant and stable supports able to evacuate water by slopes never minor to 2%. pág.

4 2. Tiling methods Choosing a suitable tiling method is paramount for an optimal result of the installation process. UNDEFASA always suggests THIN LAYER* tiling for all its products. * THIN LAYER: tiling method with grip materials by using concrete-like adhesives, dispersion adhesives or reactive resin adhesives which maximum thickness is not more than 5 mm. It can be single gluing when the adhesive is only applied on one face or double gluing when it is applied on both the lining surface and the back of the tile. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS 1º Please verify TONALITY, CALIBER AND TILE before tiling. 2º-Mix pieces from several boxes. 3º- Any complaint concerning already tiled products will not be accepted Indoor Tiling Methods. - Please use a tiling joint of at least 1.5 mm. ( 3mm in rectified tiles) Please never tile without joints. These must be straight and regular. - In order to choose an adhesive, please check Table 1. - Double gluing is always strongly advised for all products but 20x20 wall ceramic tiles and 20x25 single gluing can be used in both cases. Junta mínima = 1,5 mm - Please don t moisten tiles with water. - While adjusting, please lift one of the tiles to check if the required contact surface is being achieved. -To achieve a correct jointing, please remove the spare adhesive from the joints before it gets hard. -Fresh tiling result must be protected from weather, frosts and early drying. It is also necessary to protect ceramic tiling from possible damages made by later works. -The application must be performed when room temperature, support temperature, and material temperature are between +5ºC and +30ºC. pág.

5 JOINT PROCESS: Indoor joint process must be performed at least 24 hours after the tiling. Joint materials must be applied according to the manufacturer s instruction. We will generally use joint materials class CG1 except for products belonging to ranges UNDEFASA PORCELAIN TILE, ZAPHIRE, MIO CID FLOOR TILES, MEDIEVAL OR GLASS DECORS, for which CG2 must be used. We suggest joint materials class RG for garages, since they are easily cleaned. 6 2.2. OUTDOOR TILING METHODS - Please use a tiling joint of at least 5 mm. Please never tile without joints. These must be straight and regular. - We suggest you use concrete adhesives class C2 or R by double gluing. - Please don t moisten tiles with water. - In order to make sure the layer is homogeneous, please always use a serrated trowel. - Please prevent the adhesive from fast drying. - While adjusting, please lift one of the tiles to check if the required contact surface is being achieved. - To achieve a correct jointing, please remove the spare adhesive from the joints before it gets hard. Fresh tiling must be protected from weather, frosts and early drying. It is also necessary to protect ceramic tiling from possible damages made by later works.. -The application must be performed when room temperature, support temperature, and material temperature are between +5ºC and +30ºC. Joint paste must be spread with a rubber trowel by fulfilling the joints with diagonal movements. pág.

7 3. Movement joints - Movement joints allow the absorption of the strains in the multi-stratum system to which the covering belongs. They interrupt the modular rigid covering which affects, in some instances, to all the system and which is fulfilled with a distortable material Structural Joints. FUNCTION. In modular rigid coverings, they extend discontinuities in both structural supports and claddings to absorb and reduce structural strains. Their length and width must be respected by involving all the layers in the covering system. Sealing must have a permanent deformability of at least 15% Perimeter Joints. FUNCTION. They separate the covering system from the construction elements where a change of materials is produced. Their depth must reach the basic support or, at least, the desolarization layer. Their width must be at least 6 mm 3.3.-Intermediate Movement Joints FUNCTION. They divide in stretches the full surface of the covering in order to absorb the strains coming from inside or from the support. They pierce as deeply as intermediate joints. 8 4. Glass products tiling and cleaning. - When tiling Zaphire products, please use the same tools, products, and techniques you would use for traditional wall tiles.. (View tiling suggestions). - We suggest concret adhesives class C2 - For tiling pourposes, glass range tiles need to be evenly glued in both the supporting surface and the back of the tile. An expansion joint of minimun 1,5 mm must be considered. - Any drilling must be made wich special glazier drill bits whose widia tip must be cooled with either water or turpentine. Furthermore hand drills must turn at low revolutions so that at low advance pressure is kept. - Any cut must be made as in traditional ceramic tile cutting. To avoid getting injured, please sand down all remainig edges to remove cuts and drilings. - For maintenance and cleaning pourposes, please use customary glass cleaning techniques such as water and ammoniac solutions or non-concentrated domestic detergents. To avoid surface scratching, please use products such as clothes or non-abrasive elements. Special glazier bits pág.

9 Cleaning and Maintenance 5. Post-tiling extraordinary maintenance. - After tiling floor tiles, please apply the compulsory protection to prevent damages caused by later works. -Covering them with cardboard, resistant and permeable plastic, or sawdust is strongly advised - Please consider the weather, since it could affect the drying time of joint materials. -Spare joint materials might leave ring spots difficult to eliminate due to a non-appropriate or late cleaning after tiling -Once the works are finished, please clean the resulting dirt. Use a thin rigid sponge moistene with clean water or an industrial descaling product. While bearing in mind chemical resistance, acid detergents might also be used. - We suggest to bear in mind a couple of things before using any cleaning products: 1º - Please don t apply an acid cleaning on recently tiled surfaces, since acid substances can be corrosive on non-forged concrete. Joints could be spoiled and insoluble compounds can be accumulated. 2º -To avoid the absorption of grip or joint materials, please apply clean water before chemical treatment. Please rinse with water afterwards. 3º - Please don t use any abrasive scourers or scrapers. 4º - Please never use any products containing fluorhydric acid. They are extremely aggressive. 6. Everyday cleaning. - Ceramic tiles are not difficult to attend. They can easily be cleaned with water, either clean or containing alkaline detergents. - The usage of either waxes or oily soaps is never advised. They can not be correctly applied on glassy surfaces due to their lack of porosity. - Incidentally, tiles can be affected by spots that can not be completely eradicated. In such cases, specific cleaning products should be applied. - Please check before cleaning the chemical resistance of the tile. - An excessive concentration of detergent could result in an ineffective cleaning. In such cases, please rinse them again. Otherwise, floor tiles could have ring spots, their shining could deteriorate or dirt could be more easily adhered. pág.
