1 KCCA 1 Keokuk County Career Academy Course Descriptions IT Academy (Information Technology) 1 st BCA185 Beginning Webpage Development 3 This course will introduce the concepts of design and development of websites. Creating web sites will be discussed using XHTML and style sheets. These concepts will be applied in a variety of web-development exercises. NET615 Social Engineering 2 This course will cover social engineering, which is the means hackers use to gain personal and private information through the use of influence, persuasion, deceit or manipulation. Other topics will include methods used to detect, investigate and prevent them from succeeding. CIS604 Visual Basic 3 This course will focus on developing applications using a visual programming language. The student will write programs that utilize graphical user interfaces. NET122 Computer Hardware Basics 3 This course will cover information from the Computing Technology Industry Association (Comp TIA) sponsored A+ Certification Exam, which is designed to certify computer technicians in PC software and hardware repair. CSC110 Introduction to Computers 3 This course is an introduction to business computer software and hardware. Students will use basic and intermediate features of word processing and spreadsheet software and basic features of database and presentation software. General computer concepts and the Internet will also be covered. NET780 Microcomputer Utilities 3 This course will introduce the student to the currently used operating system with an emphasis on System, Internet and Network Utilities. Prerequisite: NET122 Computer Hardware Basics.
2 KCCA 2 IT Academy (Information Technology) 2 nd GIS100 Introduction to Geospatial Technologies 3 This course will introduce the student to terminology, concepts, applications, data acquisition, trends and careers using geospatial technology. This course includes an overview of hardware, software, online mapping machines and related technologies, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). The applications of GIS across various disciplines, such as business, government and the private sector, will also be introduced. GIS140 Introduction to Global Position Systems 3 This course will introduce the student to Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and their use in Geospatial Technologies. Students will work with mobile GPS units to become familiar with their functions and learn to record GPS coordinates for use in projects. CIS500 Intro to Business Analysis 2 This course identifies the role a business analyst provides for a company. Knowledge and practical experience will be gained by analyzing, designing, documenting and presenting for a business system. GIS111 Introduction to Geographic 3 This course will allow the students to learn the basics of working with existing GIS data and maps and the creation of new maps. The student will use the ARCView software when working with their projects. Topics will include map design, GIS outputs, geodatabases, geocoding, importing and analyzing spatial data. Prerequisite: GIS100 Introduction to Geospatial Technologies. CIS159 Programming With Alice 3 This course will introduce the concepts of creating a computer program using the visual programming language Alice. The student will use object-oriented programming and development concepts to create animated scenes in a three-dimensional world. SPC101 Fundamentals of Oral Communication 3 This course focuses on basic communication, including the communication process, self-concept, self-disclosure, perception, language, listening, non-verbal messages, interpersonal relationships, public speaking, small group communication and inter-cultural relations.
3 KCCA 3 Welding Academy 1 st WEL150 Arc Welding I (SMAW) 2 This course covers safety, electrode selection, power sources and welding distortion control utilizing arc welding processes in all positions. WEL151 Common Arc Welding Processes 2 This is a facilitated course, which covers different arc welding processes used in industry. MAT762 Technical Math for Industry 2 This course covers mathematical operations using fractions, decimals and percentages. Customary and metric measurement problems are discussed. Practical applications of mathematical concepts are provided. WEL181 Gas Metal Arc Welding 2 This course covers safety and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) techniques in horizontal, vertical and overhead positions. WEL110 Welding Blueprint Reading 2 This is a facilitated course which covers how different types of welds are designated on blueprints and the manner in which the weld locations are specified. WEL120 Oxy Fuel Welding and Cutting 2 This is a facilitated course which covers oxy-acetylene and shielded metal arc welding procedures in the flat position. WEL201 Procedures and Qualifications 1 This is a facilitated course designed to make the student aware of proper welding procedures, qualification records and procedure specifications found in industry. This course helps prepare the student who will become a welding supervisor or inspector. WEL202 Discontinuities & Defects 1 This is a facilitated course which covers different discontinuities and defects related to the arc welding processes found in industry. WEL190 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding 2 This is a facilitated course which covers safety and gas tungsten arc welding in the flat position.
4 KCCA 4 Welding Academy 2 nd WEL173 Advanced Welding Procedures I 3 This is a facilitated course that covers in-depth study of welding procedures and the proper use of electrodes and techniques of advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Prerequisites: WEL120 Oxy Fuel Welding and Cutting, WEL150 Arc Welding I (SMAW), WEL181 Gas Metal Arc Welding and WEL190 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. WEL182 FCAW 2 This is a facilitated course which covers Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) techniques and procedures. Prerequisites: WEL120 Oxy Fuel Welding and Cutting, WEL150 Arc Welding I (SMAW), WEL181 Gas Metal Arc Welding and WEL190 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. WEL174 Advanced Welding Procedures II 3 This is a facilitated course that covers Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) preparing the student for structural steel and pipe welding. Prerequisites: WEL120 Oxy Fuel Welding and Cutting, WEL150 Arc Welding I (SMAW), WEL181 Gas Metal Arc Welding and WEL190 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. WEL200 Metallurgy Fundamentals 2 This is a facilitated course which covers basic metallurgy, destructive and non-destructive testing methods which the students will see or possibly use in industry. WEL211 Production Welding Procedures 4 This is a facilitated course which covers Gas Metal Arc Welding Pulse (GMAW-P) in a production environment. Prerequisites: WEL110 Welding Blueprint Reading; WEL120 Oxy Fuel Welding and Cutting, WEL150 Arc Welding I (SMAW), WEL181 Gas Metal Arc Welding and WEL190 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. ADM221 Career Development Skills 2 This course teaches the student the skills required to locate prospective employers and to obtain a position in the chosen field. Topics covered include company and job research, application forms, resumes, letters, telephone techniques and interviews.
5 KCCA 5 Machine Technology Academy 1 st MFG121 Machine Trade Printreading I 2 This course covers the reading and/or creation of engineering drawings through mechanical sketching techniques as a means of communication. Emphasis is placed on developing the perceptional skills that require the student to think in three-dimensional space. MFG209 Machine Shop Practices 3 This course covers safety in machine shop, environmental safety, measurement, layout, inspection, setup, basic bench work practices and non-traditional machining processes. MFG222 Machine Operations I 4 (1 st Half) This project-oriented lab is the first class in the machining series. The operations involve machining parts utilizing the lathe, vertical milling machine, drill press, surface grinder, shaper, pedestal grinder and band saw. MFG131 Machine Trade Printreading II 2 This course provides the necessary range of topics to ensure that the student will know how to interpret engineering drawings. MFG222 Machine Operations I 4 (2 nd half) This project-oriented lab is the first class in the machining series. The operations involve machining parts utilizing the lathe, vertical milling machine, drill press, surface grinder, shaper, pedestal grinder and band saw. MFG228 Machine Operations II 4 This project-oriented lab is the second in the machining series. The operations involve machining parts utilizing the lathe, vertical milling machine, drill press, surface grinder, horizontal milling machine, shaper, pedestal grinder and band saw. Prerequisite: MFG222 Machine Operations I.
6 KCCA 6 Machine Technology Academy 2 nd MFG233 Machine Operations III 6 This project-oriented lab is the third class in the machining series. The operations involve machining parts utilizing the lathe, vertical milling machine, surface grinder, drill press, rotary table and direct indexing head. Prerequisite: MFG228 Machine Operations II. MFG262 Mill Operations Theory 3 This course includes an introduction to basic milling machine operations, gear cutting, drilling, and drilling machines. Prerequisite: MFG209 Machine Shop Practices. MFG233 Machine Operations III 6 This project-oriented lab is the third class in the machining series. The operations involve machining parts utilizing the lathe, vertical milling machine, surface grinder, drill press, rotary table and direct indexing head. Prerequisite: MFG228 Machine Operations II. MFG254 Engine Lathe Theory 3 This course includes an introduction to metal cutting technology as it relates to cutting tools, materials used, cutting fluids and safety. The lathe, components and all the basic engine lathe machining processes will be included. Prerequisite: MFG209 Machine Shop Practices or may be taken concurrently. CAD180 Intro to SolidWorks 2 This is a combined collaborative learning and lab course. The student will be introduced to computer-aided drafting using SolidWorks software. The student will develop skills in SolidWork s basic commands and specific command sequence operations. Data entry will be by keyboard and pull down menus. MFG352 CNC Lathe Fundamentals 2 This course covers the introductory theory of two axis programming, plotting tool paths and the operation of the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathe. The course also covers understanding and using the cartesian coordinate system and selecting cutting tools for turning, grooving and threading. Prerequisites: MFG254 Engine Lathe Theory and MFG262 Mill Operations Theory.
7 KCCA 7 Nursing/Health Occupations Academy 1 st HSC113 Medical Terminology 2 This course offers a study of the basic medical language essential to health occupations careers. Emphasis will be placed on word analysis and construction, definitions, pronunciation, spelling and standard abbreviations. HSC139 Healthcare BLS.5 This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the healthcare provider level based upon current American Heart Association guidelines. HSC268 Health Career Certifications.5 This course provides students entering a health career with essential professional practice/practicum information related to child and dependent adult abuse, HIPAA and infection control principles. PNN147 Nursing Essentials I 3 This course introduces the essential scientific knowledge, technical skills and communication techniques, as specified by OBRA, to function as an accountable member of the health care team. Theory, laboratory practice and clinical experience will be incorporated to prepare the student to address the biopsychosocial and spiritual needs of patients. HSC180 Nurse Aide Advanced 3 This course is designed as an optional unit of instruction to follow the approved 75-hour Nurse Aide course. Course theory builds on the content introduced in the 75-hour Nurse Aide and emphasizes the knowledge, attitude and skills necessary for providing patient care in the acute setting. Prerequisite: PNN147 Nursing Essentials I. PNN265 Nutrition 3 This course surveys normal nutritional needs of individuals throughout the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on identifying the various nutrients and their functions for the maintenance or restoration of health. The protection and preservation of food and community nutritional needs are discussed. Dietary modifications related to specific diseases are introduced. PNN148 Nursing Essentials II 2 This course introduces basic assessment principles and techniques and explains documentation procedures. The concept of surgical asepsis and the procedures requiring sterile technique are discussed. Protocol for medication administration is examined. The student will have the opportunity to gain skill in advanced nursing procedures requiring sterile technique. Prerequisite: PNN147 Nursing Essentials I. PNN231 Pharmacology 3 This course is designed to provide the student with information essential to planning care for patients receiving medication therapy. Common medications affecting the body systems will be introduced. Principles of basic mathematics used in the calculation of drug dosages will be integrated.
8 KCCA 8 Nursing/Health Occupations Academy 2 nd ENG105 Composition I 3 This course emphasizes competent writing skills, focusing primarily on expository and analytical writing. Particular attention is given to rhetorical modes and to the analysis of social issues and/or literary works. Students will write four to six word essays. Instruction also includes clarity, punctuation and style. All students enrolled in this course must take the reading and writing portions of COMPASS. PSY111 Introduction to Psychology 3 This course provides a broad introduction to the principles of contemporary psychology. The course is based on providing the student with an understanding of the theoretical foundations of psychology, as well as a survey of empirical research dealing with behavior and mental processes. CSC105 Computer Essentials 1 The basics of the Windows operating system, electronic communications and Internet research will be covered. Students will use basic features of word processing and presentation software. This course is intended for students with limited computer skills. PNN401 Mental Health Nursing I 1 This course introduces basic nursing theory related to the psychological aspects of illness. The concepts of mental health and emotional illness are examined. The role of the nurse in caring for clients with alterations in mental health is discussed. Prerequisites: PNN501 Nursing of Adults I and PSY111 Introduction to Psychology. PSY121 Developmental Psychology 3 The course is designed to provide a survey of the patterns of behavior and current attitudes on human development from birth to death. Emphasis is given to the theories of cognitive, social, physical and emotional development. Prerequisite: PSY111 Introduction to Psychology. BIO175 Human Anatomy 3 This course covers basic concepts in human anatomical structure in relation to simple body functions. All body systems are covered with emphasis on structure. This course is for students interested in pursuing health or science programs. To succeed in this course, a student should have a strong background in biology. BIO176 Human Anatomy Lab 1 Anatomy lab covers the lecture topics through the use of models, computer simulations and diagrams to confirm anatomical structure of tissues, bones and muscles. Prerequisite: BIO175 Human Anatomy or may be taken concurrently.
9 KCCA 9 Entrepreneurial Career Academy 1 st BUS130 Introduction to Entrepreneurship 3 This course examines the process of preparing to open or purchase a business. Students will learn how to explore potential business opportunities and investigate how to prepare a business plan, obtain financing and set a start up schedule. Successful businesses on both the national and local levels will be examined. CSC110 Introduction to Computers 3 This course is an introduction to business computer software and hardware. Students will use basic and intermediate features of word processing and spreadsheet software and basic features of database and presentation software. General computer concepts and the Internet will also be covered. CSC130 Business Computer Software 3 This course uses projects to focus on business use of computer systems and application software. Topics include the Internet as a business resource, web page design and creation, desktop publishing, presentation software and software integration. Prerequisites: CSC110 Introduction to Computers, BCA101 Intro to Computers and Information Systems, or consent of instructor. MKT140 Principles of Selling 3 This course examines sales skills from finding prospects to closing the sale. The student will also examine the relationship between sales and the marketing efforts of an organization. Emphasis is on the need to develop relationships in order to achieve sales. ACC118 Introduction to Accounting Systems 3 This course covers the design and use of an accounting system for a new or growing business. Topics include IRS requirements, management information needs; various report forms, and the use of popular accounting software. Basic accounting principles and practices will also be addressed. BUS197 Leadership Development 3 This course prepares the student for a leadership role in business, government and non-profits. All of these organizations depend on leadership that determines what needs done and challenges people to act. Developing leadership skills not only benefits society, but is personally rewarding.
10 KCCA 10 Entrepreneurial Career Academy 2 nd BUS133 Entrepreneurial Studies 3 The entrepreneurship seminar will give the student the ability to obtain practical experience in applying the material learned about entrepreneurship and business management. The student will have the opportunity to explore an area of interest that could lead to a future business or develop new product or service ideas. Prerequisite: BUS130 Introduction to Entrepreneurship. MAT156 Statistics 3 This course is an introduction to and survey of general statistics. Topics covered include obtaining, presenting and organizing statistical data; measures of central tendency and variability; probability concepts; probability distributions; hypothesis testing; and simple linear regression. Some background in algebra is recommended. BUS135 Managing the Entrepreneurial Venture 3 Managing the growth of a business involves skills different from those of a new business or static business. This course will investigate those unique areas such as financing, marketing, staffing and fine-tuning the strategy. One of the main principles that will be developed is how to balance all aspects to survive and grow. ENG111 Technical Writing 3 This course prepares the student in the areas of written and oral communication for professional situations. Instruction includes approaching writing rhetorically, employing techniques in document design and style of career-related communication. This course will emphasize effective professional communication in real-world applications. BUS932 Internship 1 This course provides the opportunity to enhance academic preparation and professional growth through hands-on work experience. Students gain valuable real world experience. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and have completed 30 semester credit hours toward an Associate Degree. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor. SPC122 Interpersonal Communication 3 The course examines how the concepts of self and human behavior influence both interpersonal and intrapersonal communication. Activities and techniques are introduced to improve the student s one-on-one and small-group communication skills, especially listening, nonverbal communication and conflict reduction.
