Office phone: Cell: COURSE DESCRIPTION: A development process of selection, organization and management of instructional content and supplemental materials; development of objectives; the integration of teaching/learning strategies; implementation of evaluation measures. COURSE PURPOSE: The purpose of this course is to provide educators with a broad understanding and hands-on development of curriculum and assessment in the aviation industry. COURSE PREREQUISITES: Junior or Senior standing/private pilot rating STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Objectives This course is designed to enable you to: 1. develop a macro and micro curriculum related to the aviation field you are pursuing 2. work effectively on multi-disciplinary and diverse teams to critically assess and analyze strategic planning and decision making related to curriculum development 3. engage in and recognize the need for life-long learning through sustainable long term planning 4. critically access contemporary issues related to aviation curriculum 5. evaluate and reporting on existing curriculums to meet program goals Outcome AABI 2.4. Much of what we will do depends on the learner, environment, and experience. You being absent will be noted. FEEDBACK ON ASSIGNMENTS: Please bring all assignments with you to class on the day they are due. We will generally discuss findings during that class period and do a self-critique. FINAL EXAM: The portfolio is due no later than December 13 th and graded by December 16 th. We will NOT have class on December 13 th. TEACHING METHODS: lecture, class discussions, online discussions, peer review, and class activities.

Washington, DC: Government Printing Office Retrieved from Online articles and texts posted in D2L TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS: We will be using the Internet extensively for research and evaluation. A highspeed internet connection is required for proper progression in this class. If you have a laptop or tablet, please bring it to class, as we will be working in class with finding articles and brainstorming. However, laptop is not required. WRITING EXPECTATIONS: CTE 440 is listed as an Advanced Writing Requirement course and therefore much of the work done in class will be in written form. Maximum points will be given for written assignments that follow assignment guidelines, are well written, follow APA 6 th Edition guidelines, are easy to read, cite the literature, provide a roadmap for the reader, and have sound syntax and grammar. Please take a look over the Tips for Using the APA Publication Manual, located in the resources section of D2L. Please proofread your written assignments prior to handing it in. This typically means writing the paper, letting it sit for a day or two, having it proofread by another person, and reconceptualizing/rewriting based on feedback. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM POLICY: The following actions will not be tolerated and if detected will be reported to the appropriate authorities for disposition. Cheating: An act of deception by which a student misrepresents that he or she has mastered information on an academic enterprise that she or he has not mastered. Plagiarism: The offering of as one s work the words, ideas or arguments of another person without appropriate attribution by quotation, reference or footnote. Fabrication: The intentional and unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise. Facilitating Academic Dishonesty: Those who intentionally or knowingly help or attempt to help another to commit an act of academic dishonesty are also subject to penalty. FREEDOM IN LEARNING: Under Board of Regents and University policy student academic performance may be evaluated solely on an academic basis, not on opinions or conduct in matters unrelated to academic standards. Students should be free to take reasoned exception to the data or views offered in any course of study and to reserve judgment about matters of opinion, but they are responsible for learning the content of any course of study for which they are enrolled. Students who believe that an academic evaluation reflects prejudiced or capricious consideration of student opinions or conduct unrelated to academic standards should first contact the instructor of the course to initiate a review of the evaluation. 5 REVISIONS: The purpose of the class is to develop a curriculum that could be used throughout the field of aviation. To facilitate that process, the curriculum will more than likely be fluid. We will work together to make sure expectations remain clear. EVALUATION: GRADING SCALE A % B % C % D % F % FINAL PORTFOLIO: Each person will develop an electronic portfolio where they store all of the course information. It should include all ten projects as well as the rubrics you will create for one of the assignments (we will work go over this in class). This will be part of your last two assignments grade. You may either burn everything to a jumpdrive, cd, or create use a program such as google docs, Microsoft skydrive, or dropbox.com. The purpose of the portfolio is so you have a permanent record of what you have accomplished. 6 ADVANCED WRITING REQUIREMENT Department Report Form Program Department: Consumer Sciences Area/Major: Aviation Person Reporting (Name and College: EHS Phone #): Jeff Boulware Students will be required to successfully complete: Course Prefix and Number: AVIA 440 Course Name: Curriculum design in aviation Attach a syllabus which includes the advanced writing goal statement, student learning outcomes, and assessment strategies. Recording Student Performance and Remediation: If a student fails the course, she/he will need to repeat it. Advanced Writing Goal Statement: Students will build upon the concepts learned in courses covering SGE Goal #1 and refine their skills through research and writing in a discipline specific context. SLO #1: Read extensively and respond critically in the written discourse of a discipline; formulate research questions, refine topics, develop a plan for research and organize what is known about a topic; articulate a position through a thesis statement and advance it using evidence from primary and secondary sources, examples, and counterarguments that are relevant to the audience of issues at hand. SLO #2: Use a style manual and other writing conventions specific to a discipline; avoid plagiarism by adhering to the rules for paraphrasing, summarizing, and the use of quotations, as well as the conventions for incorporating information from Internetbased resources. SLO #3: Evaluate sources critically, both print and electronic, discern the strength of evidence and arguments, determine credibility, and identify potential bias and overall quality Assessment Strategies FTD lesson plan in written format Course redevelopment paper The APA 6 th edition Style Manual is required to complete the written portion of the project. Both traditional and online resources will be used in the research process. Evidence will be found on the reference pages and in the citations. 7 Comments: (use additional space, as necessary) This is course is designed with several objectives, in addition to the advanced writing student learning outcomes. 1. To develop research techniques appropriate to undergraduate study and the work place. 2. To gain experience in identifying trends, and in obtaining, organizing, analyzing, and presenting trends information. 3. To develop analytical skills needed to critically assess the accuracy and relevance of source materials. 4. To enhance writing skills. 5. To provide experience in the oral presentation of reports. Well-developed communication skills (both written and oral) are absolutely essential if one is going to be successful in life and career. A primary objective of Curriculum design in aviation is to enhance the students written and verbal communication in a form that showcases artifacts. Extensive peer feedback, followed by group critique and instructor evaluation follows all projects in the course. Experience will be gained in developing a portfolio demonstrating the students ability to critically analysis data, write effective lesson plans and objectives, and promote life-long learning. The final research project is a multitiered approach where each lesson builds on the previous lessons.
