Each year, NARF conducts a nation-wide search for law students to participate in its Law Clerk Program. 2 SUMMER 2014 LEGAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY NOTICE TO SECOND AND THIRD YEAR LAW STUDENTS AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION VOTING RIGHTS PROJECT, NY For more than 93 years, the (ACLUF) has been at the forefront of virtually every major battle for civil liberties and equal justice in this country. Principled and nonpartisan, the ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and brings together the country s largest team of public interest lawyers, lobbyists, communication strategists, members and activists in the advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially for the most vulnerable in our society. The Voting Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) seeks interns to work on active litigation and other projects in its New York office for the Summer of OVERVIEW The Voting Rights Project of the ACLU has been an established and recognized national leader in the field of voting rights for more than 40 years. Its docket includes litigation in more than a dozen states and encompasses issues such as minority voting rights, redistricting, registration, election reform, felon disfranchisement, voter education, and ballot access. Most recently, the Project has been engaged in groundbreaking litigation challenging onerous identification and proof of citizenship requirements for voting in various states, including Arizona, Kansas, South Carolina, Texas, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, and voter suppression efforts in North Carolina. The Project also intervened on behalf of minority voters in Shelby County v. Holder, a case challenging the constitutionality of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act; and conducted litigation to secure and protect the voting rights of Native Americans in Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Montana. INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW The internship offers the opportunity to work on all aspects of litigation. The internship requires a week commitment and is full-time. Arrangements can be made with the student s law school for a work/study stipend or course credit. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside the Voting Rights Project team on: All aspects of litigation, including legal research, factual investigation, drafting of memoranda, complaints, discovery materials, briefs, pleadings and other litigation documents. Advising ACLU affiliates, private attorneys, governmental entities, and others who seek the ACLU's help. Screening potential cases. Researching or drafting materials for public education. DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS The internship is open to second and third year law students who possess: Excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills. The initiative to see projects to completion. The ability to work with diverse groups.

5 FALL 2014 FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY SPONSORED DISABILITY RIGHTS FELLOWSHIP EQUALITY [CE-07] NOTICE TO THIRD-YEAR LAW STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES Equality Center, Disability Rights, SF For more than 93 years, the (ACLU) has been at the forefront of virtually every major battle for civil liberties and equal justice in this country. Principled and nonpartisan, the ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and brings together the country s largest team of public interest lawyers, lobbyists, communication strategists, and members and activists in the advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially for the most vulnerable in our society. The Equality Center Disability Rights Section of the ACLU s National Office in New York City and San Francisco seeks applicants for a sponsored fellowship, such as Skadden, Liman and other public interest fellowships, beginning in the Fall of OVERVIEW The ACLU has a long history of defending the rights of people with disabilities. It played a major role in securing passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ACLU has battled discrimination against persons with HIV/AIDS and stood up for the voting rights of persons with disabilities in the ongoing debate over electoral reform. It has fought to obtain adequate health care and access to services for prisoners with disabilities across the country. The ACLU also established the right to treatment for persons with mental illness who are involuntarily committed. The ACLU s Disability Rights work has three priority areas: voting, education, and Olmstead issues. For this fellowship, the Equality Center is particularly interested in sponsoring a fellow to work on reducing the use of Restraint & Seclusion in public schools. The project would combine outreach, parent and school education and training, and incorporating legislative and litigation efforts as well. The Center will work with a candidate to develop proposals related to the project on an accelerated timeline. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES In addition to developing proposals for funding, the fellow will participate in education, outreach, and potential litigation at the state and federal level, including but not limited to: Conducting legal and factual research; Interviewing clients; Drafting briefs and pleadings, and amicus curiae briefs; Assisting in discovery and motion practice; Providing support for ACLU affiliate litigation; Serving as a resource for ACLU legislative and policy work; Advancing ACLU policy goals through public education, organizing and participating in coalitions. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS J.D. degree or anticipated law school graduation by the Fall of Knowledge of legal issues involving disability rights, discrimination, education and Special Education preferred, but not required.
6 Skilled at complex legal analytical work. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law. Excellent research, writing and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to work independently as well as within a team. Self-motivated and able to manage a variety of tasks. Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU and advancing disability rights.
