1 EMBS - European Management and Business Sciences STUDENT HANDBOOK 1. Objectives of the Programmes The EMBS Consortium provides integrated European programmes of study leading to the certificate of European Bachelor-Level Business Sciences ( EBBS ) and the European Master- Level Business Sciences ( EMBS ). The aim is to meet the requirements for the academic education of business and management graduates in modern Europe. 2. Participating Institutions The following European higher education establishments participate in the EMBS programmes: - University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark; - University of Birmingham, England; - University of Vaasa, Finland; - Ecole Supérieure de Commerce Bretagne Brest, France; - Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Clermont, France; - Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, France; - Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Montpellier, France; - Ecole de Management de Normandie, France; - Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, Germany; - Universität Regensburg, Germany; - Universität Stuttgart, Germany; - Università degli Studi di Pavia, Italy; - Krakow University of Economics, Poland; - Universidad de Alcalá, Spain; - ETEA-Facultad de Ciencias Economicas y Empresariales Córdoba, Spain; - Universidad de Granada, Spain; 3. Conferment of the Title and Certificates To those who completely fulfil all the requirements of the relevant programme the Consortium awards jointly the certificate of European Bachelor-Level Business Sciences ( EBBS ) and/or European Master-Level Business Sciences ( EMBS ). The Consortium also issues to successful graduates an academic certificate with the relevant marks obtained at the Home and Host Universities. 4. Courses of Study 4.1. European Bachelor-Level Business Sciences
2 The EBBS course of study is an integrated programme leading to the award of the EBBS certificate. The course of study comprises a minimum of 180 ECTS credits. The first year of the programme (normally equivalent to 60 ECTS credits) must be completed at the Home University. A minimum of 20 ECTS must be obtained within the European Affairs module. A minimum of 30 ECTS must be obtained at the Host University including 10 ECTS with the European Affairs Module. Candidates must be awarded their home degree before being eligible for the EMBS Consortium qualification European Master-Level Business Sciences The EMBS course of study programme is an integrated programme leading to the award of EMBS certificate. The course of study comprises a minimum of 120 ECTS credits. The first year of the programme (normally equivalent to 60 ECTS credits) must be completed at the Home University. An exception to this rule applies where students complete their Bachelor-Level programme at the same university. A minimum of 60 ECTS of the remaining 120 ECTS credits must be obtained at the Host University. These 60 ECTS credits obtained abroad must be within the business area and include 20 ECTS within the European Affairs module. Candidates must be awarded their home degree before being eligible for the EMBS Consortium qualification. 5. Admission Requirements and Procedures The responsibility for nominating a candidate rests with those members of the EMBS Committee who are representatives of the home institution. Candidates do not have the automatic right to be admitted to and placed at a specific university of their choice. In addition to fulfilling the registration requirements of the individual institutions involved, all candidates entering EBBS or EMBS scheme must register with the EMBS Committee using a form issued by the Committee European Bachelor-Level Business Sciences The requirements for admission to the EBBS are: a) Full-time registration in a Business Studies degree programme at one of the participating institutions; b) Outstanding academic performance in the first year of the programme;
3 c) Sufficient knowledge of at least two languages of the participating countries European Master-Level Business Sciences The requirements for admission to the EMBS are: a) Full-time registration in a Business Studies course at one of the participating institutions; b) Outstanding academic performance in the first year of the Master s programme or at the Bachelor s level; c) Sufficient knowledge of at least two languages of the participating countries. 6. European Affairs Modules 6.1. A unique and distinctive feature of the EMBS Consortium courses of study EBBS and EMBS is a compulsory European Affairs module to be completed at the host university and comprising 20 ECTS credits. The types of courses included in the European Affairs module are shown in the figure below : 3. FOREIGN LOCAL ELEMENTS 2. INTERNATIONAL ORIENTED MANAGEMENT ELEMENTS 1. EUROPEAN CORE ELEMENTS a. EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONS & POLITICS b. EUROPEAN LAW c. EUROPEAN ECONOMICS d. EUROPEAN HISTORY, SOCIETY & CULTURE e. EUROPEAN MANAGEMENT 1. The inner ring: EUROPEAN CORE ELEMENTS (heart of the European Affairs module) a) EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONS & POLITICS b) EUROPEAN LAW c) EUROPEAN ECONOMICS d) EUROPEAN HISTORY, SOCIETY AND CULTURE e) EUROPEAN MANAGEMENT 2. The middle ring: INTERNATIONAL ORIENTED MANAGEMENT ELEMENTS Covering courses, which don t contain specific European but international management topics such as International Management, International Finance, etc., but also including every kind of management course which deals with international questions.
4 3. The outer ring: FOREIGN LOCAL ELEMENTS Including a variety of local oriented courses from the host institution, also foreign language courses 6.2. European Bachelor-Level Business Sciences The requirements for the European Affairs Module at Bachelor s level are as follows: - European Core Elements: 10 ECTS - International oriented management elements: 5 ECTS - Foreign Local Elements: 5 ECTS - A Bachelor Thesis or project at the home university can substitute up to 10 ECTS of the European Affairs Module. This Thesis MUST have a European dimension as determined by the home university coordinator European Master-Level Business Sciences The requirements for the European Affairs Module at Master s level are as follows: - European Core Elements: 10 ECTS - International oriented management elements: 5 ECTS - Foreign Local Elements: 5 ECTS 7. Structure of the Program ECTS credits in business sciences are completed at the Host University, including the special module "European Affairs" (=20 ECTS credits). For the European Master-Level Business Sciences certificate students must complete a module entitled Master Thesis (= 20 ECTS) The member institutions of the Consortium shall be free to decide on the specific course contents of the program offered by them, as well as on the nature of the lectures/seminars and the number of required contact hours per subject. The program to be offered to a candidate at the host institution shall be subject to agreement by the home institution Institutions shall also ensure that it is feasible for a candidate to complete the business courses and European Affairs module offered within a single academic year EMBS Master Thesis. The Master Thesis should preferably reflect the European dimension. A European aspect may be given by the choice of topic or by the fact that candidates write their thesis in connection with work undertaken for a commercial or non-commercial enterprise abroad. 8. Academic Reports and EMBS Consortium Certificates European Bachelor-Level Business Sciences When a candidate is awarded the EBBS he/she will be issued with a certificate which contains:
5 A B C D E The average marks of the courses taken at the host institution in Business Sciences and European Affairs module. The marks obtained will be expressed on the ECTS grading scale. Excellent Very Good Good Satisfactory Pass Students that obtain a minimum of 60 ECTS at the Host University are awarded a Certificate with Distinction or with Merit on the following basis: Distinction: Excellent in both the business sciences courses and European Affairs module Merit: At least very good in both the business sciences courses and European Affairs module The names of the home and host universities where the student studied. European Master-Level Business Sciences When a candidate is awarded the EMBS he/she will be issued with an Academic Report which normally contains: The average marks of the European Affairs module and the average of the Business Sciences courses and the mark for the Thesis. The marks obtained will be expressed on the EMBS grading scale. A B C D E Excellent Very Good Good Satisfactory Pass Students are awarded a Certificate with Distinction or with Merit on the following basis: Distinction: Overall average of excellent in both the business sciences courses and European Affairs module and the Thesis Merit: At least an average of very good in both the business sciences courses and European Affairs module and the Thesis The names of the respective universities where the courses were taken and the Thesis was written.
