2 What is a cluster? Cluster is a network of companies and research institutions, has a thematic focus, is regionally concentrated, is institutionally organised, is managed by a cluster manager, may also include other actors such as public agencies. Various sectors: Biotechnology, IT & communication, Food industry, Construction sector, Energy & environment etc. 2

3 Transnational Renewable Energy Cluster EU Project Part of the SMART+ programme on entrepreneurship and innovation of SMEs at regional level Funded by EU INTERREG IVC and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Project duration: May 2011 to April 2013 Project partners & regions: North-West Regional Development Agency & Technology Transfer Center, Cluj-Napoca (RO); Centre for Research and Technology Hellas & Waste Management of Western Macedonia, Western Macedonia (GR); Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum, Saxony (GE) 3

4 Transnational Renewable Energy Cluster Objectives Setting up of 2 regional clusters in Cluj and Western Macedonia by benefitting from the good practices from the cluster in Saxony Fostering the already established cluster in Saxony (NEU e.v.) Collaboration and cooperation of SMEs, research institutions and local authorities among the TREC clusters Promoting development, cooperation, integration of the cluster regions in the field of renewable energy and innovation Internationalization: linking TREC to further clusters in the renewable energy & environment area in Europe 4

Focus: Eastern and South Eastern Europe Initial contacts and cooperation with partners from Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland Further partners are welcome 5
