Notable Cases In just the past few years, our Alarm & Security Services Industry Practice members have handled several significant, notable cases, including Deere v. Peterson Properties. In this case, a Davenport, Iowa, warehouse nearly one million square feet in size was destroyed in a fire. The fire was identified as being the second largest property loss in the world in the year 2001, followed only by the losses sustained during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. An initial estimate claimed that $220 million of John Deere agricultural equipment was destroyed in the fire. The loss devastated Deere s profits during fiscal year 2001, as many of the items destroyed in the fire were the bulk of Deere s European stock. Through aggressive discovery and motion practice, our team was able to garner a favorable result for the client, while the remaining similarly situated defendant sustained a record-breaking verdict of approximately $40 million. Our lawyers were also involved in the catastrophic Cook County Administration Building fire in Chicago. Numerous building occupants lost their lives when stairwell systems locked and prevented escape for many inside. That fire initiated a national review in evacuation and firefighting procedures in large, skyscraper buildings.
