1. Introduction Nomenclature Acronyms This manual often uses acronyms specific to the industry of telecommunications and data communications. Because the sections (and, to a certain extent, the subsections) can be read in any sequence, acronyms are not defined in the text. For a complete list of acronyms used in this manual, see appendix A, starting on page Jargon This manual often uses technical terms specific to the industry of telecommunications and data communications. Very specialized terms are sparsely used, and their meanings are clearly explained where they are used. For a complete definition of all unique terms used in this manual, see the glossary in appendix B, starting on page Special Paragraph Styles The following notices are used to attract special attention to certain items. They set text off from the main body of the manual. These notices may also appear in other languages where required by certain regulatory bodies: Important This notice contains special information which should not be ignored. Caution This notice calls attention to a condition or procedure which, if not observed, could result in damage to the MX25 or the loss of data. Warning This notice indicates if a specific procedure or practice is not correctly followed, permanent damage to the MX25 and personal injury may result. Danger This notice warns you of imminent hazard to yourself and others if proper procedures are not followed. 1.4 Forms of Documentation Printed The printed version of this manual is updated with each major release of the software. The manual describes the features in that release of the software. 3

MX25 User s Manual Between major releases of software, Zultys may issue one or more minor releases of software. These minor releases may have more capabilities than the current formal release. The features in that software (and the user interfaces to support those features) may or may not be described in this manual. Zultys produces intermediate versions of this manual (as a PDF file only) to describe the features introduced in a minor version of the software PDF This manual is available in PDF format. You can download the PDF file from the web site at: You can obtain old versions of the manual which may describe the software you have, the manual used to produce the most recently printed manual, or the latest manual which describes all the latest features of the product. You can identify the version of the manual from the title page, opposite the table of contents (page 2 of the PDF file). When reading the PDF file, you can click on any reference in the text. This powerful feature allows you to easily follow the references in the text. Using Acrobat, you can then return to the page you were previously reading. This is a huge benefit to you if you want to study a small area of the product On Line Help You can access the on line help from any window of Zultys software. Help is always contextsensitive, so the information display is relevant to the window you are viewing. The help contains the vast majority of information in this manual. It does not describe installation. The help may have additional information about specific windows not contained in this manual. 1.5 Colophon This document was produced on personal computers using Adobe s FrameMaker for Windows. The printed book is printed by an offset process. The headings are set in Swiss 721, Bitstream s version of the Helvetica typeface; the copy is set in Zapf Calligraphic, Bitstream s version of the Palatino typeface; notices are set in Swiss 721 or News Gothic, Bitstream s version of the Kingsley-ATF Type Corporation typeface. Released versions undergo full regression and beta testing, and are made available to the general public. Pre-released versions undergo less stringent 5

MX25 User s Manual testing, and are made available to customers periodically. If you obtain pre-released software from Zultys, you do so with the understanding the MX25 may reboot or the software may freeze during operation Numbering Scheme Zultys uses a scheme that comprises three numbers to denote its software versions. The three numbers are separated by periods (full stops). This is shown in figure 2-2. revision minor version Figure 2-2 Software Versions The first number denotes the major version and changes only when Zultys has made significant changes to the software in usability or functionality. The major versions are numbered sequentially. The second number denotes the minor version. Minor versions differ from each other by the addition of incremental features or usability. This number is always even for released software and odd for any pre-released software. The third number denotes the revision. When a new version (comprising a specific major and minor version) is created, the revision is set to zero. If Zultys finds problems with the version, Zultys will build a revised version and increment the revision. For any two versions of software, the one that has the higher number is usually the later code. When assessing version number, the major version represents the most significant digits and the revision the least significant digits Examples The following are examples and might not reflect actual scenarios First build for customer shipments. A release candidate Problems were identified prior to release. This is an internal build to attempt to resolve the problem The problem is resolved and this version is actually distributed on CDs An intermediate build, working towards version 1.2. The version 1.2 will be an enhancement of 1.0 and adds minor features and enhancements. Version 1.1 is an engineering version Continuing development for version

2. PC Requirements and Software Basics Built for customer shipments. A release candidate Actually released, distributed on CDs Released maintenance upgrade to all users to overcome the problem Development code. Working towards version 2.0. This represents major changes and improvements over the version 1.2 software Release candidate for customer shipments. Found to be good and distributed on CDs Identifying the Software Version When you run the Administrator UI, you can see the software versions under Help About. The graphic displays the major and minor version numbers. The complete version is listed in text under the graphic. If you click on the More button, you can see the version numbers of all of the modules of the software. You are unlikely ever to need this information, which is provided only when you are communicating with Zultys technical support. Figure 2-3 Identifying the Software Version from a File Manager 7

Refer to Microsoft s documentation regarding the functionality of these menu items Help Access the online help, Administration Manual, the software version in use, and the Zultys web site in figure Figure 2-10 Help Menu 2.4 Manipulation of Data The administration user interface interacts with a database on the MX25. From the user interface, you make changes to the contents of the database. The windows of the user interface are designed to give you flexibility in the way you work while preserving the integrity of the database. For this reason, some windows show Apply at the bottom and others show OK Apply, Close, and Cancel A window with an Apply button affects the contents of the database. When you open this window, the Apply button is grey and inaccessible. The button next to it is marked Close. When you make a change to the contents of the window, the Apply button is available and the button next to it is marked Cancel. Figure 2-11 Apply, Close, and Cancel Buttons 11

MX25 User s Manual If you click Apply, the program sends the changes you made to the window to the database. The program then greys the Apply button and changes the button next to it to Close. If you click Cancel, the program asks to confirm you want to discard the changes. If you discard the changes, the database is not modified and the program closes the window. If you click on Close, the program closes the window OK and Cancel A window which has OK does not affect the contents of the database. When you close this window by either clicking on OK or Cancel, the program does not modify the database. However, if such a window returns control to a window that has an Apply button, when you click on Apply the changes you made in the window which had the OK button may affect the database. For example, after an NTP server is added, the System Clock window (Provision System Clock) has an Apply button. If the time zone is modified, click OK. However, those changes do not take effect when you close the window. Those changes only take effect when you click the Apply button on the System Clock window. If you make changes to the time zone window, the program makes the Apply button accessible on the System Clock window so you can update the database. 2.5 Shutting Down the MX25 Ordinarily you should not disconnect power from the MX25 without shutting down the system first. Although the system has been designed to tolerate such an immediate removal of power, it is possible the integrity of the database may be corrupted. If the integrity of the database is corrupted, the MX25 will use a database it had saved internally when the power is restored. Any changes that you made to the configuration will be lost. To prevent the database from being corrupted, you should use the shutdown function from the Administrator UI prior to removing power. From the main menu, select Maintenance Shutdown MX. Section 15.5 on page 76 describes the shutdown process, along with all of the shutdown and restart options. 12

Chapter 3 Initial Configuration 3.1 Introduction This chapter describes the software installation and the order in which the system should be provisioned and configured. 25 Chapter 4 SIP Gateway Operation 4.1 Introduction The MX25 operates as a SIP Gateway, in which the MX25 is a standalone SIP gateway to the PSTN. This chapter describes MX25 operation as a SIP Gateway, including its operation after losing communication with the primary SIP proxy. 4.2 Definition of SIP Gateway Operation As a standalone SIP gateway to the PSTN, the MX25 relies on an external IP PBX to provide the PBX functionality to its users. The MX25 refers to this device as the Primary SIP Proxy. The MX25 converts the format of a phone call to allow it to pass between the IP network and the public telephone network. Specifically, the MX25 allows for the following conversions for call control and media: SIP to ISDN Basic Rate (S/T for ETSI) and vice versa SIP to ISDN Primary Rate (T1 and E1) and vice versa SIP to CAS (T1) and vice versa SIP to analog FXO and vice versa SIP to analog FXS and vice versa In addition to providing functions of the PSTN gateway, the MX25 can also operate as a SIP gateway to SIP proxy servers. You can pass a call from the PSTN to one of several SIP proxy servers, depending on the source or DID. 4.3 Provisioning the MX25 Parameters in the following windows must be configured for the MX25 to operate as a SIP Gateway: System Settings Refer to Chapter 6, starting on page 27. SIP and RTP Refer to Chapter 5, starting on page 23. PSTN circuits The following chapters provide details on provisioning the PSTN circuits installed in your system: Analog (FXO and FXS) circuits: Chapter 9, starting on page 39 19

MX25 User s Manual PCM circuits: Chapter 10, starting on page 47 BRI circuits: Chapter 11, starting on page 53 Dial Plan: Refer to Chapter 12, starting on page Sample SIP Gateway Application Figure 4-1 shows a simple application of the MX25 where it provides PSTN connectivity for a SIP network. Figure 4-1 Sample MX25 Application Routing an Incoming PSTN Call The sequence of events for normal operation of an incoming PSTN call is as follows: 1. PSTN seizes a voice channel on the MX MX25 converts the PSTN channel into a SIP call and directs the call to the SIP proxy for auto attendant service, voice mail service, or direct user routing-based DID. 3. For the duration of the call, a two-way voice stream is established between the IP phone and the MX25, while call control is maintained between the SIP proxy and the MX When one party hangs up, the MX25 and SIP Proxy negotiate the release of the call and the SIP proxy updates its call detail records Routing an Outgoing Call to the PSTN This is the sequence of events for normal operation of an outgoing call by an IP phone: 1. User of an IP phone dials a number and sends a SIP request to the SIP Proxy. 2. SIP Proxy uses internal dial plan to determine the SIP request is sent to the MX Based on its internal dial plan, the MX25 determines which PSTN circuit to use. 20

4. SIP Gateway Operation 4. MX25 seizes a voice channel on the PSTN and sends the destination address to the PSTN for routing. 5. For the duration of the call, a two way voice stream is established between the IP phone and the MX25, while call control is maintained between the SIP Proxy and the MX When one party hangs up, the MX25 and SIP Proxy negotiate the release of the call. 4.5 Loss of Communication with SIP proxy When the MX25 cannot communicate with the primary SIP proxy, it directs calls without the assistance of the SIP proxy server. This special mode of operation was designed for temporary situations, such as failure of the WAN which connects the MX25 to the SIP proxy. During a failure to communicate with the SIP proxy, the MX25 automatically uses its internal dial plan to route calls. Because the connection to the SIP proxy is no longer valid during a WAN failure, the MX25 becomes the secondary (backup) SIP proxy server for the local IP phones. For outgoing calls from FXS devices connected to the MX25, the MX25 routes all calls based on its dial plan without first sending the call to the SIP proxy. For incoming calls, the MX25 routes all calls to a SIP device with a fixed IP address or to one or more of the FXS devices that are directly connected to the FXS interface cards. 21

Chapter 5 SIP and RTP Settings 5.1 Introduction The MX25 requires the configuration of several SIP and RTP protocol parameters to function properly. To operate as a SIP Gateway, you must enable the External SIP Proxy and specify the address of the proxy. These parameters are typically set only when you initially provision the MX. The SIP and RTP window lists these parameters. To access the SIP and RTP window, select Provision SIP and RTP from the main menu. This window comprises the SIP Settings and IP Settings panels. 5.2 SIP Settings Panel The SIP Settings panel, shown in figure 5-1, configures the external proxy settings, a default registration interval, transport communication ports, and protocol timers SIP Proxy for Incoming Calls These parameters configure the MX25 to communicate with the Primary SIP proxy, as described in section 4.2 on page 19. This proxy is displayed as the Primary Proxy on the SIP Servers window, as described in section 8.2 on page 35. Use External Proxy. If this box check, the MX25 uses an external proxy server. When this option is not selected, the MX25 routes incoming calls from the PSTN as specified by the Survivability panel of the Dial Plan. Primary Proxy Address. This parameter specifies the IP address of the SIP address that routes incoming calls from the PSTN circuits or external SIP servers SIP Registration These parameters configure parameters for SIP messages that the MX25 sends to the SIP Proxy to register its FXS devices. The Analog (FXS) window, as described in section on page 40, configures the FXS devices attached to the MX25. SIP Registrar Address. This field specifies the IP address where the MX25 sends SIP REGISTER messages. This is the usually the same IP address as the SIP proxy address. Registration Interval. This parameter specifies the registration period between successive SIP REGISTER messages sent by sent by an MX25 FXS device. 23

MX25 User s Manual Figure 5-1 SIP Settings Panel Communication Ports These parameters configure the transport port number. The default port for both TCP and UDP transports is 5060, which is the value recommended by the SIP specification Timer Settings Idle TCP Connection Timeout Idle TCP connection timeout specifies the period that the MX25 will maintain an idle TCP connection before closing it. The system default period is 60 seconds SIP Timer T1 SIP Timer T1 configures the minimum retransmit interval period when a client transaction uses an unreliable transport, such as UDP. The client transaction retransmits requests at an interval that starts at T1 seconds and doubles after every retransmission. Valid settings include 500 ms, 1000 ms, and 2000 ms. 24

5. SIP and RTP Settings SIP Timer T2 SIP Timer T2 configures the maximum retransmit interval period when a client transaction uses an unreliable transport, such as UDP. Valid settings are 4 seconds and 8 seconds. For unreliable transports, requests are retransmitted at an interval which starts at T1 and doubles until it hits T2. If a provisional response is received, retransmissions continue for unreliable transports, but at a time interval defined by the T2 timer SIP Session Expires Timer SIP Session Expires Timer measures the time-out period during which the MX25 transmits or receives a RE-INVITE which refreshes a session still in progress. This time-out, a keep-alive mechanism, informs proxies a call is still active, which may not be the case if a BYE is lost or not transmitted by a UAC. The default value (when enabled) is one hour Minimum Session Expires Timer Minimum Session Expires Timer determines the minimum time to which a Proxy or a UAS can reduce the value of the Session Expires timer. This timer is enabled when you enable the SIP Sessions Expires Timer. Default value (when enabled) is 30 minutes. 5.3 IP Settings Panel The IP Settings panel, as shown in figure 5-2, RTP protocol settings, RTCP report transmissions, and jitter buffer settings. Figure 5-2 IP Settings Panel 25

MX25 User s Manual UDP Ports for RTP This parameter defines the UDP port numbers the MX25 uses during RTP transports. When the MX25 sends an INVITE method, it specifies (in the SDP) the lowest-numbered port available from this block, thus indicating that it expects to receive media on this port. The next highest port is used for the associated RTCP transmissions. The MX25 can process a maximum of 30 simultaneous RTP streams, including streams originating from or terminating at the MX25. This requires a block of 60 ports. You allocate a port block by indicating the first port number of the block; the first port must have an even number. The MX25 automatically fills in the ending port number to allocate 1000 ports for the block RTCP Reports This parameter determines if the MX25 automatically sends RTCP reports with the RTP streams that it transmits. The default setting is Automatically Send Jitter Buffer Settings Jitter buffers compensate for network jitter at the receiving interface by buffering incoming packets and preparing them for playout. Note the size of the receive jitter buffers can vary. The MX25 default is set to use adaptive jitter buffers which vary in size automatically. The Administrator can also choose to specify a fixed size jitter buffer between 20 and 100 ms. 26

Chapter 6 System Settings 6.1 Purpose You configure the pertinent system information in the System Settings window of the Administrator s UI. This window comprises the following two panels: Company This panel configures enterprise domain, call progress tones, country code, and the default codecs. IP Addresses This panel configures the system s IP address, the subnet mask, default gateway, and IP addresses of the DNS servers. To access the System Settings window, select Provision System Settings from the main menu. The information entered here will seldom, if ever, change. 6.2 Company Panel The Company panel, shown in figure 6-1, assigns identification information to system parameters and variables and provides information for properly communicating with devices and other systems. Company panel parameters include: Default domain. The name identifies the deployed MX25 to the network. This name is used in all SIP messages that make and receive calls. Default codec. This parameter determines the algorithm used by the MX25 to convert speech conversations to and from digital data streams. Systems in North America and Japan are typically set to G.711 µ-law. Systems located elsewhere are usually configured for A-law. Call progress tones. This parameter determines the audible signals sent by the MX25 to a call originator for indicating call status. This parameter is set in terms of national standards. The MX25 must be rebooted to enable call progress tone modifications. Country code. This parameter specifies the international dialling code for the country of deployment. The value of this parameter should usually be the value listed in Call Progress Tones setting. 27

MX25 User s Manual Figure 6-1 System Settings Company Settings Panel 6.3 IP Addresses Panel The IP Addresses panel of the System Settings window, shown in figure 6-2 configures the IP address of the MX25, and provides data entry for entering the IP address of the DNS servers accessed by the MX Ethernet LAN You can change IP addresses on this panel only when the MX25 is powered up in console mode. Refer to section on page 16 for instructions on entering console mode. Changing the internal addresses requires the MX25 to restart, with a possible loss of service. When the MX25 is shipped, the external IP Addresses are not provisioned. This means no external IP communication with the MX25 is possible. Select two consecutive external IP addresses not used in the network. Configure one of the selected IP addresses to the IP Address (main) field, which is for most of the communication between external servers and devices and the MX25. Assign the other to the IP Address (RTP) field, which is used for the RTP (media) stream. The Default Gateway provisions the external network gateway connecting the MX25 to other networks. After you provision and apply these external IP Addresses, the MX25 reboots and you can subsequently connect to the MX25 using the external IP address from anywhere on your network DNS Servers This section provides data entry boxes for the Primary, Secondary (backup to the primary), and Tertiary (backup to the secondary) DNS servers accessed by the MX25. 28
