2 Introduction In 2011, one Health Impact Assessment (HIA) was conducted on an urban planning project : the Pontchaillou rail stop in Rennes. HIA was carried out collectively by : the city of Rennes, The School of Public Health (EHESP), the S2D Association, the Regional Health Angency of Britanny (ARS), and Rennes Metropole. This is the first experimentation of a Health Impact Assessment on an urban planning project in France. Several recommendations were issued in order to minimize the negative effects and maximize the positive impact of the project on the health and quality of life of populations. Two years later, the project has begun its operational stage and is being monitored with regard to the HIA recommendations. This monitoring work supports the operational implementation of recommendations What added value of the HIA on the project in terms of health? 2

19 Screening Scoping Assessment Recommendations Monitoring Currently, the implementation of the HIA recommendations has started for the public spaces of the Pontchaillou railway stop (contracting owners : City of rennes) through : Analysis grid developped during HIA and 41 recommendations Study of the project in progress developped by consultant and engineer «Ingerop», and architects and urbanists «Bruno Romué et associés». Regular meetings with the departments in charge of the operation conducted in the city of Rennes and project management. Elaboration of a monitoring assessment tool 19

22 III. What added value in terms of health? To date, a contribution on three thematics: Transport and mobility: issues of active mobility, such as cycling or pedestrian traffic, have been put at the heart of the project as a tool for health promotion. Public spaces: Green spaces has evolved into a living environment, a meeting place focused on well-being ("Health Garden ). Architects and urban planners have integrated this idea and are now using it for the entire project. Environment: the HIA offered an overview of the potential impact of the project on the environment (water, air, noise, ground, electromagnetic waves...) outside of the regulatory framework commonly used to handle such issues. 22

23 III. What added value in terms of health? The monitoring currently conducted on the public spaces will also be performed on the CHU and RFF spaces. It is necessary to continue to mobilize all the actors, but also to keep the steering group and manager team active. 23

24 In conclusion, other perspectives Added value in terms of health that goes beyond the limits of the project For the city of Rennes: The HIA has initiated discussions on the impact of vegetation and green spaces on health and quality of life in the city, and on the implementation of an area of health promotion in the city. A willing to continue to experiment the HIA on other areas of urban planning For the consideration of Health in urban planning: By providing feedback and methods towards the development of a guide for the Health regional agency, adaptable to urban planners, led by the Directorate General of Health and the EHESP School of Public Health. And finally, with the promotion of the HIA concept in France through events 24
