4 About the Fitness Industry 7 There are many factors which have influenced the boom in the fitness industry over the past -1 years. With the rapid expansion of the 24- hour gym and the branching of fitness into domains like corporate wellness, fitness professionals now have more employment prospects than ever before. Corporate wellness is becoming a priority due to employers and insurance organisations recognising the benefits of health and fitness programs for their employees. A report published in 28 by the Australian Governments former Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) indicates the demand of fitness professionals will continue to grow into at least 22. This growth is expected to increase the demand for personal trainers, exercise specialists, and many other health and fitness professionals. This report also predicted a shortage of preventative health and fitness professionals within the Australian Industry. In addition to the increasing demand for the number of fitness professionals, there is also an increasing requirement for fitness professionals to provide services beyond the scope of the Certificate III and IV in Fitness. With chronic health conditions being a major factor with many clients, the Diploma of Fitness is quickly becoming a requirement for a competitive edge in this industry. With your Diploma of Fitness, you will be able to establish professional partnerships with chiropractors, physiotherapists, and other allied health professionals in order to meet consumer demand towards preventative health management and working with clients who have existing chronic health conditions. Preventative health is a big topic, the primary reason is to combat the growing epidemic of obesity in the population. If the current trends are allowed to continue, it is estimated that by 22, 7% of the Australian population, young to old, will be overweight or obese. As a consequence, this will place a significant demand on the tax-payer funded health system due to the attributed burden of disease. This has resulted in the Australian government rolling out various interventions to help Australians achieve healthier lives and reduce the future burden [ABS, NHS, WHO, NHMRC, AIHW]. 5 Employment Opportunities 1. Work in a Fitness Facility With the growing number of fi tness facilities across the country, opportunities for full-time or part-time gym based employment are plentiful. Within most fi tness facilities, there are three (3) main employment options: Gym Instructor (Certifi cate III minimum) Group Fitness Instructor (Certifi cate III minimum) Employed Personal Trainer (Certifi cate IV minimum) 2. Work as a Corporate Trainer Opportunities to be Employed Some larger companies now have a supervised gym facility within their business buildings. Employees are able to use the facility during working hours as a perk of the job and it s your role as the full-time trainer to design and work through individually tailored exercise programmes with those who attend. As this area is new and growing, it is very competitive. This is when add-on and specialist skills will become essential; you need something unique about you to give you a competitive edge. Useful addition skills in the corporate world may be desk-based relaxation techniques or sports coaching skills to help boost company performance in an annual team building event! 3. Work on Board a Cruise Ship If you like the idea of seeing a bit of the world while you work, you can apply to be a personal trainer on board a cruise ship. An internet search will provide a list of cruise line recruitment agencies and details of how to apply. It is advisable to search for some independent, non-cruise line affi liated information regarding life on board a cruise ship before signing up. Some personal trainers love the energy and intensity of this type of lifestyle and continue to work on a cruise ship for many years. 1. Work as a Subcontractor in a Fitness Facility A number of health clubs and fi tness facilities offer personal trainers the ability to rent space and conduct their business from within their facility. Normally this arrangement enables personal trainers access to the facilities client base and have the fl exibility to train their own clients within the facility. Rental fees are usually a set amount weekly or a percentage of what you charge for each session. Set Up Your Own Personal 2. Training Franchise Buying into a franchise gives you the advantage of expert know-how and the support of individuals who have been there, done that and are operating a successful business. Usually you will also be provided with everything you need to get your business up and running. Franchises vary, but generally an upfront fee is paid and then a set monthly fee is paid for the duration that the franchise operates. Franchises can be an effective way to get established in the industry and to gain the experience of running your own business. 3. Opportunities to be Self-Employed Set Up Your Own Mobile Personal Training Business If you already have some business and marketing skills or you re prepared to learn, you can cut out the middleman and set up your own personal training business. With appropriate insurance cover in place and all relevant authorities notifi ed of your self-employed status, including the tax offi ce, you can advertise your services as a mobile personal trainer and begin building your business. The self-employed personal trainers who succeed do so because they learn how to market themselves effectively. This is an especially important but sometimes neglected skill that contributes signifi cantly to the survival and longevity of the personal training business. Open Your Own Personal 4. Training Studio Opening your own personal training studio provides you with an opportunity to establish a business with a larger range of fi xed equipment and the ability to offer a wide range of training options and services to your clients. The cost of renting a suitable space is of course going to vary noticeably depending on your location. However, it is worth considering that renting a studio may actually work out to be less expensive than the eventual cost to you of renting in a large fi tness centre or paying a monthly franchise fee. 6 11 STUDY WHEN YOU WANT Course Delivery Today, with the many advances in technology, accessing information and gaining skills are literally at your fi ngertips. Fitlink has embraced innovation and constructed our courses based around a blend of online theoretical and convenient practical components. The theoretical components are completed all online by accessing your online student portal. When you have reached a certain benchmark in your course, the practical components are completed. As the majority of the course structure is online, you are able to devote any time during the day or night to partake in your studies. In regards to the practical components, you have two (2) options to complete the practical logbooks for the course. 1. Attend Fitlink run Mentoring Weekends which are held in most capital cities on a regular basis throughout the year. 2. Work with a mentor in your local gym. You are able to choose your own mentor to work with as long as they are currently registered to work as a personal trainer and have been working in the industry for at least two (2) years. Once you have completed your practical logbooks, you are then able to complete your practical assessment. Practical assessments can be completed via a Fitlink Assessment Day or via video submission. Tuition Assurance Scheme Fitlink has been approved for Australian Student Tuition Assurance Scheme (ASTAS) provided by Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET). ASTAS provides students with assurance that if Fitlink was unable to continue to provide the course you have enrolled into, you would be relocated effi ciently and with minimal disruption to a comparable course with another provider. Students will be covered for the following: Your course not commencing on the agreed starting date Your course ceasing to be provided by Fitlink after it has started The full course not being delivered if a sanction has been imposed on Fitlink

During your Certificate III in Fitness studies, you will cover the following: Working in the Fitness Industry Foundation Anatomy and Physiology Exercise Psychology Nutrition Fitness Orientation and Health Assessment Fitness Testing Exercise Instruction Basic Gym Programming Introduction to Specific populations Exercise Physiology What Can I Do? The Certificate III in Fitness qualifies you to work as a Gym Instructor. You can choose to complete the Group Exercise Instruction module to upgrade your qualification also to include Group Fitness Instructor. How Does it Work? If you are thinking of further study, the Fitlink Diploma of Fitness provides you with a pathway into the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences degree with Central Queensland University (CQUniversity) and eight (8) course credit units towards your degree. 12 23 Frequently Asked Questions Your Fitlink Journey Do I need to purchase textbooks or anything else? No you are not required to purchase any text books. All of the learning resources, instructional videos, and assessments are available on the online learning portal. The only additional expense you might incur is obtaining your First Aid and CPR certifi cates or attending a Fitlink Mentoring Weekend. I have a Qualification, do you offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? Yes. We highly regard past experiences and existing knowledge and encourage students to enquire about RPL. Once enrolled, you can schedule a time with our RPL Assessor to discuss your qualifi cations and/or relevant industry experience. You will also be asked to complete a self-evaluation and provide certifi ed copies of your transcripts/ certifi cates of attainment. Once all of this information is gathered, our RPL Assessor will assess your eligibility for RPL and notify you of the outcome, including any assessment you may be exempt from. There aren t any fees for this process. What kind of support will I enjoy as a Fitlink Student? Upon enrolment you are assigned a Fitlink Tutor who is contactable via phone and . You may book face to face appointments with our Tutors in Brisbane to complete your practical assessments. Your Tutor is there to support and help you.
