North Texas North Texas region already consumes the most total electricity! And our homes use more on average than other parts of the state! North Texas Commission, NCTCOG EVNT Stakeholders Meeting, 8/13/14 File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 6
Plano Electricity Usage How much? About 4,000,000,000 kwh annually! All IMPORTED! Like most other North Texas cities Using today s solar PV technology, and about 3% of Plano s surface area, we could provide the equivalent of 40% of our annual electricity needs! File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 7
Electricity Generation & Consumption in Texas 340,033,353,000 kwh in 2014 Nuclear, 11.6% Wind, 10.6% Natural Gas, 41.1% Other (Hydro, Biomass, Solar, other), 0.7% 33.3% Coal, 36.0% 28.6% 2014 Energy Fuel Types Renewables have grown, but a huge potential remains! 2014 MWh % incr Natural Gas 139,762,093 13% Coal 122,483,396 8% Nuclear 39,287,203-3% Wind 36,142, % Other 2,358,278 11% Total 340,033,353 20% Maybe 20%+ SOLAR! 11 Why Solar, Why Now? 1. Huge Potential Solar Resources Global installed capacity keeps going up! The amount of energy that reaches the earth in one hour is equivalent to what the entire world consumes in one year! Because the costs declined dramatically! File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 10

Key Benefits Rooftop Solar PV Benefits Abundant & local energy resource Local electricity generation means less energy waste Clean Energy electricity generation with no air, water, or noise pollution (and no water required to produce electricity) No moving parts low or NO maintenance And what else? Cost competitive for rooftop distributed generation Great consumer choice to generate some of your own electricity and hedge your long term electricity costs! Promotes private investment in clean energy sources File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 17
Rooftop Solar in Texas. Right Place, Right Time! It s in the Right Place Generates electricity locally, where it is consumed Reduces transmission losses At the Right Time Operates during peak demand daytime periods (high A/C load) Alternatively, central plants (wind, NG, etc.) and transmission lines are most efficient at night Texas has the largest potential for electricity generation from solar energy of any state in the country. And Rooftop Solar PV benefits all of Texas by generating electricity without using water, and without any air, water, or noise pollution! File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 18
Today s Topics North Texas Energy Challenges Rooftop solar can provide a clean solution Solar Ready New Homes the low or no cost opportunity Solar Ready New Homes Discussion File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 19

Building a New Home? or know someone who is? Make sure your builder does one of these! Go Solar Ready 2015 International Residential Code Appendix U Include a solar PV installation Go Zero Energy Ready Go full Zero Energy Home combines high levels of energy efficiency with renewable energy systems to annually return as much energy to the utility as it takes from the utility resulting in a net-zero energy consumption for the home. File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 22
Can Rooftop Solar really grow in Texas? California 250,000+ installations Hawaii state with largest per capita penetration of rooftop solar Australia similar electricity market design, similar population over 1 million rooftops installed over 4 year period currently at 1.4 million installations File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 23

So. In North Texas Which city is going to be first (or in the top 10) to promote Solar Ready new homes? Which new development is going to be out front to offer Solar Ready new homes? Which builder is going to take market share by offering Solar Ready designed and built homes? And who is going to be left behind by not enabling a path for customers/residents to net zero or energy independence? File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 25

Solarize Plano Projects 2013 Solarize Plano Project 200+ enrolled, 52 site assessments, 20 installations 2014 Solarize Plano Project 193 enrolled, 56 site assessments, 22 installations What are the impacts of these most recent installations? These residents have made long term investments in their homes to create LOCAL CLEAN energy which will help them hedge and stabilize a portion of their long term electricity costs. They have helped reduce the peak electricity demand on the state s electric grid by locally producing 300,000 kwh annually, and with no air, water, or noise pollution! They have helped reduce water consumption in North Texas, because unlike traditional electricity generation, creating electricity from solar PV panels requires no water. They have helped the local economy through increased business sales revenue and the associated local jobs. File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 29

Go Solar at Home Plano Solar Advocates, in collaboration with Live Green In Plano, launched a pilot project Go Solar at Home on February 15, 2015 Primary goal is to connect homeowners and small businesses thinking about or ready to install solar with local area vetted solar installers Modeled after the very successful Bring Solar Home campaign from the non-profit organization Solar San Antonio Visit solarizeplano.org and Enroll tab for latest program updates EDUCATE homeowners and helping them NAVIGATE the installation process of rooftop solar PV in Plano and North Texas! Solar is the only clean energy source that just about anyone can install and manage for themselves. File: NCTCOG Energy and Green Advisory Board Slide 32
