Peralta Energy Oakland, CA Report version: 1.0 Author: Ben Thompson Report prepared for: Education for Change Public Schools, Oakland CA Properties: School Lazear Academy Cox Academy Learning w/o Limits Ascend World Academy Achieve Academy Address th Ave 9860 Sunnyside St th Ave 3709 E 12 th St th Ave th Ave Property types: All properties built as schools. One and two stories. Permanent and portable buildings. All publicly owned, tax exempt. Energy Use Summary: Page 1 of 6

Executive Summary Benchmarking energy use in buildings is accomplished by comparing buildings that have similar uses and adjusting for size differences. The key metric is energy use per square foot per year, measured in thousands of British thermal units, thus: kbtu/sq ft/yr. This metric is known as the energy use intensity (EUI). The energy use intensity of the Education for Change facilities is shown in the third column in the above chart: 'EIU - Source kbtu/sq ft/yr.' The most energy intensive site, Lazear, has an energy usage that is 25% higher than the least energy intensive site, Cox. Electricity usage is measured in kilowatt-hours (kwh). Gas use is measured in therms. Electricity is much more expensive than natural gas. Thus the sites that have the greatest electricity use intensity have the greatest energy cost per square foot. Note that Lazear and Ascend have much higher electricity usage per square foot (kwh/sq ft) than the other sites. They also have much lower natural gas usage per square foot (therms/sq ft), indicating that relatively more of their energy use is in the form of electricity for space heating and cooling. The Ascend and the World/Achieve sites have an opportunity to save money simply by switching electric rate plans offered by PG&E. The figures shown in the chart are estimated and are provided by PG&E. The total annual energy used at each site, as well as the average annual electrical demand (electric demand is the rate of use measured in kilowatts) are given in the Prop 39 'Energy Expenditure Plan Forms B' that accompany this report. A sample of use patterns is shown in the charts below. Specific energy saving measures will be determined after performing audits of each facility. Based on this benchmarking analysis, the best opportunities for savings are likely to be found at Lazear and Ascend, followed by the shared World/Achieve site. Page 2 of 6

Energy Use Patterns The chart below shows that monthly electricity use dipped substantially during the summer but remained relatively constant during the school year. The spike in April may have been caused by hot weather and increased air conditioning. The chart below shows the daily electricity demand at the same site for the month of December. Note that during the weekends and holiday period, demand was still approximately 12 kilowatts (120 light bulbs of 100 watts each, continuous, 24/7). Page 3 of 6

Contrast the above chart with the one below, a different site for the same period. The chart below shows that some automatically scheduled weekday usage was occurring during the holidays. The Christmas weekdays are significantly higher than the weekends, although the site occupancy was probably the same. The chart below shows a similar monthly electricity consumption pattern to the one above: A dip in summer months and a spike in April. Page 4 of 6

Typical weekday electrical use pattern. The darker orange color from 8 am to 10 pm is billed at a higher rate per kilowatt-hour. The electrical spike in the morning may be due to space heating demands. Pre-warming the building may save money. Typical weekend electrical use pattern is shown below. Page 5 of 6

Monthly gas use generally correlates with space heating demands. Chart below shows therms used each month of the year. Daily gas use varies with daily temperature. Chart below is for February Page 6 of 6
