1 Policing Together A quick guide for businesses to Information Security and Cyber Crime This leaflet has been produced by the Surrey and Sussex Cyber Crime Unit

2 Who is this leaflet for? This leaflet will provide small to medium sized businesses across Surrey and Sussex with advice and guidance, helping to prevent you becoming a victim of a cyber attack or information leak. If you do happen to fall victim to online crime, guidance has also been included on planning an appropriate response. Information and advice has been gathered from HM Government and other third party sources openly available online. What are your business risks? Almost every business relies on the confidentiality, integrity and availability of its information. Protecting information, whether it is held electronically or by other means, should be as important to a company as protecting cash. To ensure that your information is safe and secure, the following key questions should be asked and continually reviewed: Who would want to access your information and how could they get it? How could they benefit from its use? What would you stand to lose as a result of being unable to access your data? What would you stand to lose as a result of other people knowing your business plans? How damaging would the loss of data be? What would be the effect on your business s operations?

3 What are you trying to protect? Criminals who operate in the cyber world may be motivated to attack you for financial or political gain or just to prove that they can. You could become a target if: Your business uses ICT hardware You have any electronic point of sale You depend on any intellectual property You store personal information You have an online presence e.g. website You use systems to communicate How can you protect yourself? The extent to which you divert resources to protect your computers and information will vary depending on your individual business, the assets you have, the risk to your business and any legal requirements placed upon you. Time spent considering the following may save considerably more time and money in the long run: Who specifically is responsible for information security within your company? Who decides who has access to what information within your company? What company data is most valuable, who has access to it, where are copies stored, and what are the threats against it? Can you see what data is coming in AND leaving your systems? When did your company last conduct an information and cyber security audit? Who did it and where is the report? Does your company have a security awareness program for employees, management and day-to-day operations? Who is responsible for monitoring social media? and the internet for things which relate to your company? Do you have an incident response plan? Are you willing to go public in the event of a breach? As well as thinking about the above questions, consider:

4 The hardware you use: What computers do you have at your place of work? Where did they come from? Do you allow your staff to bring their own devices (smartphones, laptops) to work? This may pose a security risk as you do not have total control over what they do with their devices or who has access to them Protecting your physical assets with Immobilise Immobilise is the UK s national property register with nearly 30m items registered to date. If your ICT assets are stolen and later recovered by the authorities, having them registered with Immobilise greatly increases the likelihood of them being returned to you. Registration is free, visit: Common sense working practices to adopt All employees should be encouraged to routinely: Use strong passwords upper and lower case, numbers and symbols If you aren t expecting a link or attachment within an , don t click on it Be cautious when using social media and the digital footprint that you leave for all to see Treat all alien storage devices (memory sticks, CDs or DVDs) with suspicion Don t scrimp on Anti-Virus and Malware software, install it and keep it up to date Standardise your ICT security with Cyber Essentials Cyber Essentials is a government backed, industry supported benchmark which helps all businesses aim for a common standard of ICT security. The Cyber Essentials Standard can be self implemented and assessed. Achieving this standard can give your business a competitive advantage over rivals, proving you have a security standard in place. The Cyber Essentials standard is the minimum requirement when doing business with the Ministry of Defence. Visit for more information.

5 Creating your incident response plan Every business should have a plan should you fall victim to online crime. The plan requires commitment from the whole organisation and should be updated regularly as your business grows and develops. Considerations when planning your Incident Response Plan: 1. Identify a member of your team who is responsible for the plan and response 2. Outline a list of risks, threats and failure modes 3. Develop a quick response guides for these scenarios. Ensure they re easily accessible and refresh regularly 4. Have a clear decision making process 5. Develop a good relationship with law enforcement. Action Fraud is the UK s national fraud and internet crime reporting centre 6. Develop relationships with both breach-remediation experts and large enterprise businesses who may be able to help you respond and recover quickly 7. Ensure staff are aware of their roles and responsibilities in the event of a security breach 8. Identify individuals and systems that are crucial to incident response 9. Run scenario-based training to test your staff and systems to see how they would cope in the event of an attack or loss of data 10. Register your equipment at: Further thoughts Technology can assist greatly, but people are usually the easiest target for a potential hacker or thief. Good training and awareness is vital and may be your best defence. If you work closely with another business or organisation and share any technology or infrastructure with them, consider whether they may be the weak link in your defences. Larger businesses are often keen to help their partners improve their security practices. The bare minimum If nothing else make sure you: 1. Patch your systems very regularly 2. Use antivirus / antimalware protection 3. Use strong passwords
