24 Solarif Certificate Solarif's certification for module and inverter manufacturers is the only one of its kind in the whole world. Performing a specialist technical and financial risk assessment enables Solarif to assess the quality of modules and inverters. Solarif uses this assessment to determine whether or not they can accept the risk resulting from inherent defect in modules or inverters of a particular brand on type level. An inherent defect is a damage caused by the nature of or a defect in the panel or inverter itself. In other words, it is a weakness which has not been caused by an external event. Examples of inherent defect are delamination or bad soldering. In performing an annual risk assessment, we guarantee the quality of our certified manufacturers. The risk assessment focuses on the following quality aspects: 1. Materials During our inspection of the factory, we look at both everyday production and procedures. We examine how all of the internal checks and the monitoring of such checks are recorded, and this gives us an excellent impression of daily operations throughout the year. Furthermore, we also check the materials used. We check matters such as whether the materials are in accordance with TÜV certification and whether they are still suitable for use. EVA film, for instance, can dry out if it is left unused for too long. The inspection gives us the assurance we need that, upon leaving the factory, each module and inverter will have the level of quality we expect from approved manufacturers. 2. Finances Manufacturers who work with us need to have a solid financial position. We also look into whether the continued existence of the company has been secured in other ways too. In Asia, for instance, proper support from the local and national governments is also important. The financial part of the risk assessment also looks at the number of claims submitted under the guarantee and the processing of those claims. Our experienced financial specialists know which aspects need to be examined and they give us financial security that goes above and beyond the figures available to the general public. 3. Labour The price wars in the solar sector can put pressure on terms of employment. Our risk assessment looks at whether staff are treated well, in terms of both workload and remuneration. 4. Environment Solar energy has really taken off in response to environmental considerations. However, the production of modules and inverters generates waste that is harmful to the environment. Proper processing of such waste is one of our requirements. The production process may not harm the environment. This requirement does not just apply to the manufacturer - suppliers of components need to fulfil the requirement too.

25 Thanks to our broad approach, the certificate covers a wider range of issues than any other certificate issued. The multidisciplinary approach enables us to form an overall picture of the quality. If this picture meets our requirements, we will approve and certify the manufacturer. Once the manufacturer has been approved and certified by Solarif, the owner of a photovoltaic installation using certified panels and/or inverters can take out the optional Inherent defect cover in addition to Solarif s Operational All Risks insurance policy providing added value to the owner such as: Security: the risk is with a solid A-rated insurance company; Backup: whatever happens in the future with the manufacturer, for example bankruptcy, the panels (up to 20 years) and inverters (up to 7.5 years) are covered against inherent defect as long as annual premium has been paid; Completeness: often a manufacturer only reimburses new materials, our insurance also compensates costs of labour, transportation, special limits and business interruption; Bankability: our insurance mitigates the risk for the bank. Bank and investors are therefore more willing to finance because of insolvency cover; Investment protection: after bankruptcy the project value keeps more stable and makes the sale of a project easier. The insurance premium is paid by the owner of the photovoltaic installation.
