4 Leeds Something for everyone This vibrant and exciting city has something for everyone to see and do, from shopping and sports to festivals and theatre shows. You will never be bored in the lively city of Leeds. There are many places for you to catch up with friends Choose from 1,000 shops Yorkshire Sculpture Park Northern Ballet dance company Kirkstall Abbey ruins 1,000 shops With over 1,000 shops in the city, there s something for every taste and budget, from independent boutiques, vintage shops and high street stores, to designer labels such as Louis Vuitton and Mulberry. Trinity Leeds, which opened in 2013, has over 120 shops, bars and restaurants under one roof. The city is also home to the Victoria Quarter, an elegant 18th century shopping arcade and Kirkgate Market, one of the biggest indoor markets in Europe. Food and drink The city offers an extensive range of places to eat and drink, with hundreds of food outlets serving everything from Italian and Mexican to South Asian and Japanese flavours. There are over 800 attractions in Yorkshire. From mining museums, ruined castles and abbeys to serene gardens, countryside and beautiful beaches. Arts and culture The city has a thriving cultural scene and it is an internationally recognised base for the performing arts. Leeds is home to the West Yorkshire Playhouse where you can see a range of classic and contemporary theatre productions as well as Leeds Opera North, an award-winning opera company. The city has many galleries and museums too, including the Leeds Art Gallery, Henry Moore Institute and the Leeds City Museum where you can come face-to-face with Nesyamun a real Egyptian mummy. Events, festivals and carnivals Leeds hosts wonderful events and festivals throughout the year, such as the West Indian Carnival, the oldest Caribbean festival in Europe and the Leeds International Film Festival, the largest film festival outside of London. Not to be missed is the Leeds Festival, one of the biggest annual live music events in the UK that attracts 70,000 people and the biggest names in music such as Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire and Metallica. In 2014 the Tour de France, the world s largest annual cycling event, departed from Leeds. Sport Whatever your sport of choice, Leeds is home to some of the great sporting teams, from Leeds United Football Club to Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Carnegie rugby teams. You can also watch live Test Match cricket at the Headingley Stadium. There are also many gyms and swimming pools in the city. Yorkshire countryside There are 100 miles of coastline and countryside for you to explore, featuring stunning landscapes, old villages and market towns with old-fashioned tearooms. Our courses lead to study at two of the UK s most popular universities: Leeds Beckett University and the University of Leeds. Find out why the Leeds ISC will lead you to success: We create a supportive environment Moving to a different country to study can be a daunting experience at first, which is why we create a safe and welcoming environment to help you settle in and make new friends. We have small class sizes As a Leeds ISC student you will take all of your classes in one place with other international students who are in the same situation as you. You will study in small classes which will ensure you get the most out of your studies. We have expert teachers Our teachers are experts at helping students learn in a second language and they are here for you, to help you succeed in every area of study. At the Leeds ISC we have a high ratio of staff to students, so you will have a lot of time to get to know your teachers. They will monitor your progress closely so that you are always on track with your studies. You will also have a personal tutor assigned to you, who will help you throughout your studies. At the Leeds ISC we will teach you how to Lead in your classes Lead in your career Lead in the world Our courses International Foundation Year is a three-term programme of English language, study skills and academic modules that will prepare you for starting your undergraduate degree. International Year One is an intensive course that is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree. This programme will develop your English language, academic and research skills and prepare you for joining the second year of your chosen degree. Pre-Masters Business is a two-term course, which provides a range of academic and learning skills combined with English language support. This course will prepare you for starting your business-related Masters degree. Leading on to your degree When you apply to the Leeds ISC, you will need to choose the degree programme and the university at which you want to study. 9 International Foundation Year Business, Law and Social Studies This programme will teach you how to lead in your chosen career. The course leads to a wide range of exciting undergraduate degrees in subject areas ranging from accounting, business and finance to journalism, media and events management. International Foundation Year Business, Law and Social Studies You will study a combination of core and specialist modules according to your route choice. Core modules: English and Skills for University Study 1, 2 & 3 During the course of these three modules, you will develop your English communication skills and learn a range of study skills, including writing and reading strategies, presentation and seminar participation, organisation of time and materials, meeting deadlines and responding to feedback. When you have completed these modules, you will be able to take notes and write essays in English. You will also have the confidence to give presentations, answer follow-up questions and contribute to seminar discussions. Project Study You will complete a self-study project on a topic you will take in consultation with your tutor. By the end of this module you will be able to produce an extended piece of work in the discipline area of your intended degree course, through an on-going, supervised, self-study approach. The project will utilise a broad range of source material to present a coherent, wordprocessed piece of work, which combines balanced factual content with a critical commentary. Core Mathematics You will develop and demonstrate core mathematical skills, including algebra and statistics, relevant to your undergraduate degree course. You will study core mathematical principles and tools. You will practise taught skills through class work and self-study assignments. Principles of Economics The main aim of this module is for you to gain an introduction to the principle, concepts and models of micro-economic analysis, providing a framework upon which further economic analysis can be developed. You will be able to apply your knowledge base as well as learn basic skills relating to data analysis and evaluation of economics issues. You will learn about economic principles and basic terminology, goods type, demand and supply, elasticity, market failure and contemporary issues in economics. Route specific modules: Introduction to Business Studies 1 The aim of this module is to help you develop an understanding of both the operational and strategic problems facing the business enterprise in the modern market economy. This module considers the practical aspects of setting up, establishing and running a business and looks at the external influences that could have a major impact on the businesses success. You will also learn about motivation theories and operations management. Introduction to Business Studies 2 You will continue to develop your understanding of both the operational and strategic problems facing the business enterprise in the modern market economy, with particular reference to marketing management, advertising and Public Relations (PR). Introduction to Financial Accountancy This module will help you establish a sound foundation for future studies in Accounting and Finance. On completion of the unit, you will be able to maintain financial records, understand accounting systems and prepare periodic financial statements of sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies. Law 1 This module will prepare you for entry onto LLB Law or combined honours degrees. This module will also introduce you to the principles which underpin the English Legal System, the mechanics of the legal process, justice in a wider sense, and the personnel who administer it. Law 2 This module will prepare you for entry to a first year degree course in Law, by introducing you to basic legal principles and practice. You will develop an understanding of the principles, issues and legislation relating to contract and consumer protection. International Relations You will be provided with an introduction to the main areas of international relations. At the end of this module you will be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of international relations, and some familiarity with the leading theories used to analyse this subject matter. You will also be able to deploy research skills and display accurate and concise use of language within this subject area. You will be able to understand mathematical notation, terminology, convention and units, understand and interpret in mathematical terms verbal, graphical and tabular information, and manipulate mathematical expressions. Route specific modules: Applied Maths 1 and 2 These modules will teach you the basic knowledge of mechanics, and prepare you for development of mathematical applications in engineering, computer science and informatics. Physics This module will provide you with a basic knowledge of atomic physics, materials, heat and gases, and oscillations and waves. At the end of this module you will be able to apply the appropriate laws of physics to problem solving in these areas. Computing This module is designed to help you solve problems and think critically in the context of database design. You will gain an understanding of the range of problems that database applications can help to solve, and learn the main principles of solving problems using relational databases. Chemistry 1 You will learn formulae, equations and moles, atomic structure, introduction to redox systems, thermodynamics and bonding. You will understand the basis of atomic and molecular structure and of chemical bonding, and recognise the differences in properties between ions and molecules. You will also be able to use the mole concept and balance chemical equations, with an understanding of the principles of redox reactions. Chemistry 2 You will be able to present chemical data and ideas in a clear form. You will understand how chemical reactions work and the main factors which affect them, with particular reference to equilibria including acid-base equilibria. Biology 1 This module will provide you with a basic knowledge in areas of biological or biomedical sciences. You will acquire an understanding of the basic structure in relation to the function of living cells, the flow of information through the cell, and the basic principles of metabolism. Biology 2 You will be introduced to physiological processes, particularly in humans, including the cardiovascular, nervous, digestive and reproductive systems, control and coordination and osmoregulation. The Leeds ISC tutors are very friendly and good at explaining things. The teaching method is very good - everyone gets attention with it being smaller classes, so you don t feel left out. When I started here my Maths was poor and my tutor has pushed me to help my development. I have made friends at the Leeds ISC and at Leeds Beckett University as we study in the same building. I like the building we are based in as there is a social learning space where I can print my work before class and there is also a café. 11 International Year One Accounting and Finance This programme will lead you on the path to becoming a leader in the fields of accountancy and finance. International Year One Accounting and Finance You will study a combination of core and specialist modules according to your route choice. Core modules: English Skills for University Study You will develop your English communication skills and learn a range of study skills including: writing and reading strategies, presentation and seminar participation, organisation of time and materials, meeting deadlines and responding to feedback. When you have completed this module, you will be able to take notes and write essays in English. In addition, you will develop analytical skills and ways of applying critical thinking to case studies and scenarios in your assignments. Professional Development and Planning Skills This module is designed for all students taking the course, whatever their chosen pathway. This module is delivered by subject specialists and the topic will either complement or develop themes related to your undergraduate degree. Route specific modules: Financial Accountancy The purpose of this module is to introduce the fundamentals of financial accounting. It develops both practical application and underpinning knowledge along with critical analysis of business performance in the context in which the characteristics and principles of accounting are applied in practice. Business in Context This introductory module explores the domestic and international business environment in which organisations operate. It will teach the essential tools and theories of economics, providing business students with a base to identify the economic dimensions that organisations face in all aspects of their activities. Corporate & Business Law This module introduces students to the key areas of the English legal system including the legal framework relating to business. It is designed to provide the requisite skills, knowledge and understanding to enable you to fully appreciate the legal environment governing the legal entities. Data Analysis and Management Accounting The purpose of this module is to introduce the core principles of management accounting and data analysis techniques used in business. It will develop the skills required to assist and inform managers in decision making, planning and control. Christopher completed a work placement at Walt Disney Company as part of the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance at Leeds Beckett University. Getting an internship with the Walt Disney Company for my work placement has been incredible. Applied Academic Writing Skills AAWS provides an introduction to research methods and methodology relevant to undertaking an undergraduate degree in a range of specialisms including business, management, law, finance and events. It aims to introduce students to the main sources of information and the main research methods used for identifying and gathering that information. You will develop critical approaches so that you can engage effectively with the quality and content of resources and sources of research, together with developing strategies to engage with the volumes of information available. Age: Students must be 18 years of age, or older.
