2 Becoming a teacher in NJ Website to refer: Types of certification: Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (Traditional Route) Certificate of Eligibility (Alternate Route) Provisional Standard

3 General (basic) requirements Bachelor s degree Cumulative GPA requirement (at least 2.75/4.00)

4 Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing Issued to individuals who have completed a teacher preparation program and the below requirements and who does not hold a standard certificate or has not completed one year of full-time teaching under an out-of-state instructional certificate Requirements: 30 Korean content course credits (at least 12 credits being advanced) (15 credits for 5-8) Professional teacher preparation (coherent sequence of courses including student teaching) Oral Proficiency Interview Second language acquisition and related methodologies at least three credits Physiology and Hygiene requirement (can be fulfilled by taking a test) For 5-8 the individual also needs to received certification elementary school subject matter certification and credits from a course in adolescent psychology

5 Certificate of Eligibility (Alternate Route) Issued to individuals who have NOT completed a teacher preparation program and the below requirements Requirements: 30 Korean content course credits (at least 12 credits being advanced) (15 credits for 5-8) Oral Proficiency Interview Physiology and Hygiene requirement (can be fulfilled by taking a test) For 5-8 the individual also needs to received certification elementary school subject matter certification Since October, 2009: 24 hour requirement on basic pedagogy

6 Provisional Certificate For newly hired teachers with a CE or CEAS and a full-time teaching position Valid for two years By finishing the Provisional Teacher Program that requires receiving mentoring, supervision/evaluation, and at least 200 hours of formal instruction, the teacher will be able to receive STANDARD CERTIFICATION

7 Standard Issued to individuals who have completed the provisional teacher program, holds an instructional certificate or holds a valid out-ofstate instructional certificate with one year of full-time teaching experience under the certificate Requirements: 30 Korean content course credits (at least 12 credits being advanced) (15 credits for 5-8) Professional teacher preparation (coherent sequence of courses including student teaching) Letter of teaching experience Oral Proficiency Interview Second language acquisition and related methodologies at least three credits Physiology and Hygiene requirement (can be fulfilled by taking a test) For 5-8 the individual also needs to received certification elementary school subject matter certification and credits from a course in adolescent psychology

8 If you are not a US citizen A five-year certificate may be issued to an individual who has met all requirements Renewal depends on the applicant s ability to show evidence of progress toward obtaining citizenship

9 Two cases - A Teacher A MA in Teaching Korean as a foreign language from Korea Received CE by completing other requirements Hired by New Jersey school district Is currently undergoing the Provisional Teacher Program training

10 Two cases - B Teacher B Received MA in TESOL, K-12 ESL Received CEAS in ESL Received CE (for teaching Korean) by fulfilling additional requirements for Korean-teaching endorsement

11 Miscellaneous Information How long does it take? Traditional route: approximately two weeks from the day that a college recommendation is received Individual applications that are not processed via a college of education: varies (summer is the busiest) How much does it cost? CE: $190 CEAS: $115 STANDARD: $190
