2 Want a benchmark for English? 1.4 million tests a year worldwide can t be wrong. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is truly international. Witness the six thousand universities, colleges and professional bodies around the world that now regard it as the benchmark of English language testing. Witness the fact that almost one-and-a-half million tests are taken each year in more than 130 different countries. Each IELTS test is based on an exhaustive, ISO-compliant development process that ensures the test material is of uncompromising quality. Strict measures are taken to guard against fraudulent test-takers and documentation, while all test centres are required to meet audited standards of quality, security and customer service. IELTS tests are continually being updated by the world s leading language experts so that they reveal both a fair and consistent assessment of English skills. Little wonder IELTS is the fastest growing English language test in the world, and the only standard by which other English language tests should be assessed. IELTS0009

7 Welcome Welcome We wish to extend a very warm welcome to the 24th Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) at one of Australia s best event venues, the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre. This year, as the AIEC nears the quarter century mark, the theme of this year s conference, Engaging for the Future, looks forward to the next 25 years of international education. As we all know, international education is undergoing a transformation as it answers the many challenges currently posed by the business, economic, social and regulatory environment in which we work. This year s AIEC will look at how our industry is adapting to change and engaging the many stakeholders who play a role in our industry and are vital to its future. Included at the conference are sessions which look at how we engage students and their families, how we engage the community, how we engage the media and how we engage government and regulatory agencies. Tony Pollock We believe that you will find that the quality of presentations, and the range and depth of topics covered, at this year s AIEC will cement its reputation as the leading international education conference in the Asia-Pacific. Of particular interest is Opening Plenary speaker Simon Anholt, a globally recognised expert on national brand and reputation, who will discuss how the international perception of Australia can be maintained and improved. Some delegates are attending their first AIEC and to you we offer a particularly warm welcome. We hope that you find the conference offers you the same benefits of professional development and network building which has brought us, and many others, back to this event year after year. We offer the same welcome to overseas delegates, whom we particularly acknowledge for making this annual event truly international. We wish you a very enjoyable and productive few days in Sydney. Other Information Sessions in the Exhibition Wednesday 13th October 1.30pm-1.50pm Student Visa Policy and Processing: How does Australia compare with other major study destinations? Racquel Shroff and Paresh Kevat - IDP Research Services IDP Booth Access to a student visa is an important factor for international students planning to study overseas. The policies and procedures of destination countries in granting a student visa play an increasingly important role in the decision making process. There is a general industry view that Australia's student visa regime compares poorly with its competitors in terms of administrative issues such as processing time and costs and also regulations which are perceived as being tougher and more onerous. This session presents a comparative overview of student visa policy setting and trends in all the Main English Speaking Study Destinations, and provides strategic recommendations on international student recruitment in the current climate. Thursday 14th October 1.30pm pm Study Migration Pathways: Changes in Australia, UK, Canada and USA Racquel Shroff and Paresh Kevat - IDP Research Services IDP Booth Employment prospects in the country of study following graduation are an important driver of choice for prospective international students. Recognising this, all the Main English Speaking Study Destinations provide pathways for qualified international graduates to acquire post-study work experience. Achieving permanent residency is a two step process: students first need to become skilled workers and then transition to skilled migrants. The recent Australian GSM overhaul has removed perverse incentives in the study-migration pathway and has created a level playing field. This session provides a comparative overview of the current pathways for skilled migration for international graduates in the major English speaking study destinations with strategic recommendations on international student recruitment in the current climate. Database of Research demonstrations - representatives from ACER will be available each day. Lance Deveson and Stuart Hughes from ACER will be at the IDP booth providing updates and demonstrations of the Database of Research on International Education which is hosted on the IDP website. 16 Being Green Being Green In 2008, AIEC undertook a number of green initiatives to become a more environmentally sustainable conference and to reduce emissions. This year we will continue to find more ways to reduce waste and improve our practices. Below are some details on what we are doing and how you can contribute to helping AIEC be green! What we are doing: The conference registration brochure was printed as an 8-page booklet (instead of the previous 24 page book). The conference registration brochure was produced on 100% recycled, unbleached and uncoated paper. The conference program and all other printed material is produced on similar paper. The registration brochure was mailed in biodegradable plastic wrap. We will not be producing a printed delegate list saving 24,000 printed pages. This is now available on the conference website. The conference satchel is produced using fully natural, lighter and biodegradable products with thanks to our Sponsor, IELTS. We have maintained the limited number of inserts in this year s satchel as well as limiting the size allowed. This will save an estimated 57,000 printed pages. We have encouraged all sponsors and exhibitors to only use recycled paper with all their materials. IDP Education will offset all flights of IDP Education and IELTS staff to travel to and from the conference. By offsetting the estimated tonnes of emissions, we are enabling the plantation of 295 trees.. IDP Education Pty Limited, with the support of IELTS, are using 100% Green Power to power the conference and exhibition. It is estimated we would use 27,122.48KwH, reducing the carbon footprint by 28.7% which is equal to eradicating the emissions of 1,283.6 Australian households for the duration of the event. What you can do: If travelling to Sydney, offset your flights with carbon credits. Most airlines offer this as an option and you can offset your flights at any time, even after you have travelled. From Brisbane to Sydney, it will cost just over $2 for a return trip. From Los Angeles to Sydney it will cost just under $31 Australian dollars for a return trip. (Based on calculations provided by Qantas). When in Sydney, travel to and from the airport using Sydney s Airport Link ( This is a quick and convenient way to travel and you will avoid the 12km trip in a cab and beat the traffic which can often be very congested. The train stops in the CBD and is a 15 minute walk to the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre from Town Hall Station or Central Station. Walk to and from the Convention Centre from your hotel. If half of all delegates decided to walk instead of catch a cab each day, we would save well over 4,000 cab journeys. To help, we will open the cloak room every day so that you can wear your walking shoes or even different clothing, and check them in before the conference. Catch the Monorail or Light Rail which both stop at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre and has stations in various parts of the city. Visit for further information. Catch the Coach to the Conference Dinner from the conference hotels. Use this opportunity to meet and network informally with your colleagues and enjoy the evening where we provide you with transportation to and from the conference hotel. We encourage you to join us at all social events, however, if you are not planning to attend, please hand in your tickets. This will help our catering numbers and prevent food waste. We will provide you with an opportunity at the registration desk to do this. Make suggestions on how we can make this and future conferences even greener write to us at aiec2010@epicconferences.com.au What the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre (SCEC) are doing: 80% of waste is diverted from landfill to make paper, green electricity and compost Food waste is sent to a specialist recycling plant to convert it to green fuel Unused fresh food is donated to OzHarvest and shared with people in need The Bayside Convention Centre has a lighting control system which automatically adjusts to the amount of natural light available throughout the day, reducing electricity usage Reduced water consumption through installation of waterless urinals, touch sensor taps and water-saving shower heads 16
