2 Rainbow colours of innovation Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi at SPJIMR On Nov.29, 2014, Nobel laureate Mr. Kailash Satyarthi led a packed auditorium at the S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) to call out, I am a hero, during a 45 minute inspiring address that saw him highlight the burning problem of child abuse and the linkages to growth and sustainability. Mr. Satyarthi was at SPJIMR for an interactive session organised by the Eco forum Committee on the theme : 'Social development and mass empowerment as the way to achieve sustainable growth.' He shared his experiences about his journey as an activist and talked about bringing sustainability in the growth process and summed with the need for six 'E's: Education, Employability, Entrepreneurship, Efficiency, Equity and Ethics, which will ultimately lead to emergence of holistic and inclusive growth. Mere permutations of the 6Es won't work. What we need today is the combination of all the 6Es, he said. Through his inspiring words, he asked students to look inward for the hero within rather than heroes on celluloid. We look for heroes outside but the real hero is within you, he said and went on: Break your silence, open up your hearts and minds for no country can survive without freedom. The fire must be burning in each one of us forever. Mr. Satyarthi at SPJIMR People who are responsible for transforming society are the ones who think beyond the limits of sky, he said. He also stressed about the need for having a vision not for just oneself but also for the country and said that only through greater transparency and accountability can we bring the about the change we wish to see. His deep commitment for the cause of children shone right through the address and left a mark on the audience, which comprised participants of various SPJIMR Director greeting the Nobel laureate management programmes at SPJIMR, faculty, staff, visitors and media representatives. He said: When I received the Nobel prize, the first thing I told my office was that whenever I am called to speak, my first priority will always be the youth and children. The rest can wait. The recognition of Nobel prize doesn't belong to me but belongs to the youth of this nation, he added. Asking students to probe deeper into issues, he spoke of a journey that should be about question marks and not full stops as we evaluate, ask and relook at issues before us. That is what will inspire creativity and innovation, Mr. Satyarthi said. SPJIMR, a top ranked B-School,which is a non-profit and a part of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, has been noted for its unique initiatives that expose management students to issues like poverty in rural and urban India through initiatives like the DOCC and Abhyudaya. Under these initiatives, participants work with children in urban slums and issues concerning children and other social concerns through various NGOs in rural areas. Mr. Satyarthi's visit was particularly significant for SPJIMR because of the Institute's consistent efforts at addressing societal issues through management education and through the development process of children, families and communities. The presence on campus of Mr. Satyarthi, who has championed the cause of children, therefore carried a lot of significance and relevance to SPJIMR's philosophy, mandate and mission of Influencing Practice and Promoting Value-based Growth. SPJIMR Director Dr. Sesha Iyer introduced the school's mission and later felicitated the Nobel laureate with a shawl and handed him and Mrs. Sumita Satyarthi, who is an activist in her own right, mementoes on behalf of the Institute. 1

12 Heroes Speak The DOCC committee at SPJIMR organised 'Heroes Speak' on December 26, The event themed 'Women Empowerment', provided a platform for students to interact with few of the most awe-inspiring figures in this field. The esteemed speakers present were Mr. Jockin Arputham, Ms. Flavia Agnes, Ms. Mita Vashisht, Mr. Arunachalam Muruganatham and Ms. Chetana Gala. These eminent personalities spoke about their impressive works in the field of empowering women. Speakers at Heroes Speak Ms. Flavia Agnes, lawyer and women's rights activist, spoke to students about how she overcame an ordeal and went on to study law and specialise in women's rights. Ms. Agnes said: "In my own dark time, I realised that though laws are framed, people don't have either the knowledge or accessibility to use and enforce them appropriately. She further explained that this is the main reason why the rate of crime against women is going up while the conviction rate is spiralling down. In order to bridge this discrepancy, Agnes set up Majlis, a legal and cultural resource centre that campaigns for and provides legal representation to women on issues of matrimonial rights, child custody etc. Speaking about law as a career option, Ms. Agnes pointed out that it is a lucrative profession with new dimensions like corporate and finance law appealing more to youngsters. Mr. Arunachalam Muruganantham is a Tamil Nadubased rural entrepreneur who is credited as the inventor of a low-cost sanitary pad making machine and also instrumental in creating awareness against traditional unhygenic practices of menstruation in rural India. He advised students to explore problems rather than opportunity. "A managment degree trains you to look for opportunities to set up a business and make money, however, one needs to focus on finding a problem that needs a solution and create a win-win situation, said Mr. Muruganantham. "Through my venture of manufacturing low-cost sanitary pads, I am running a silent Pink revolution that aims to make India a 100 percent sanitary napkin using country," said Muruganantham, who was ostrasiced by his family and village while running the campaign. "I wanted volunteers to test the prototype I designed with my own hands. No one was willing to try it out. My wife tried once, but was embarassed, so I decided to use it myself," he explained to his awestruck young audience. Mr. Jockin Arputham, President of the National Slum Dwellers Federation asked the question, "Who's empowering whom?" According to him, it is not the women, but men who need to understand the power of women. Taking a lesson from women in Mumbai slums, Mr. Arputham said:"women know how to manage money, gather information and communicate efficiently. This helps them to be better managers than men." Ms. Chetna Gala Sinha, who set up the Mann Deshi Mahila Sahkari Bank, a micro finance bank which lends loans to women in rural areas shared her experience of working with illiterate women who have little or no knowledge of the banking sector. She said: "Mann Deshi was denied a licence by the Reserve Bank of India because the women banking with us were illiterate village folk. Though I almost gave up the idea of setting up the bank, these women took up the challenge of learning to read and write and six months later accompanied me to the RBI office. Ms Mita Vashisht, a theatre and TV artist, shared her experience of working with trafficked children who were rescued. She said: "Since these children were assaulted physically and mentally, I worked on making them stronger through theatre, classical dance and martial arts. I made it a point not to sympathise but empathise with their situation and help them find their calling. Today some of them are settled with a job and even married, their cruel past not affecting their present or future. However, many are still left behind and need to be rescued, she added. 13 Lock Stock Trade 2015 Lock-Stock-and-Trade (LST) is the annual event conducted by Entrecom, our student committee for Entrepreneurship. This year's LST was held on January 3, At LST, student teams from leading B Schools and Engineering Institutions showcase the Business Growth Plans of real first gen entrepreneurs with whom they are partnered. Fifteen teams selected from entries across the country, present the Business Plan for their respective ventures simultaneously across three tracks. Each track has a panel of well-known entrepreneurs/ investors/faculty to comment and evaluate the B Plans for that track Alongside, the presentations are judged by a panel comprising of seed fund investors, entrepreneurs and faculty with exposure to entrepreneurship. The most investment worthy venture as judged by the jury panel and as invested in by the mock investors was AppKnox, an early stage venture in the security apps space, co-founded by Prateek Panda, 2nd year student at SPJIMR. The keynote speaker for LST 2015 was Sunil Rao, cofounder of Four Fountain De-Stress Spa. The keynote speaker at LST is a highly regarded, first generation entrepreneur. Some of our keynote speakers have been Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Ajit Balakrishnan, Capt. Gopinath and Muktivel Janakiraman. The audience of students from B Schools and Engineering Institutions don the role of mock investors at LST. Each investor is provided a kit containing the Executive Summary of all the ventures and other material for analysing the investment worthiness of each venture. Based on this data, the 90 second pitching by the 15 team leaders the track presentations and discussions among themselves, the investing audience bids for allocation of stocks in three or four most investment worthy ventures as assessed by them, thus building a market based portfolio of investments. Prizes are awarded to the investor with the highest portfolio value and for the venture having the highest market capitalisation. This simulation game is c o n c e p t u a l i s e d b y SPJIMR and NEN, our partners for LST. Celebrating entrepreneurship at SPJIMR It's called Lock, Stock, Trade, or LST, and it celebrates entrepreneurship at the S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), a top five B- School. LST is a part of the course curriculum combined with all the excitement of a simulation covering real life business ventures that are then sold in IPO fashion to the audience and later get picked for further funding. As B-Schools increasingly turn their attention to building and supporting entrepreneurship, SPJIMR is taking the subject to a new level because the Institute itself has grown in an entrepreneurial mode. Says Prof. M S Rao, Chairperson of the Centre for Entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurship has been a key enabler of SPJIMR's progress from relative obscurity to prominence At a time when B-Schools in general have developed entrepreneurship with external funding, SPJIMR stands out for being self-sufficient and self-financing. This year, LST was celebrated on January 3, 2015 kicking off the New Year at SPJIMR's sprawling 45 acre Andheri campus and marking 11 years of an event that serves to highlight the early steps that SPJIMR took on entrepreneurship. LST is conceptualised by SPJIMR and the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). SPJIMR is a co-founder of NEN along with IIM- Ahmedabad, IIT-Mumbai, BITS-Pilani and Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology, Bangalore. 12
