3 Summer 2014 Michael Slon Music Director Elisabeth Golden Executive Director BOARD OF DIRECTORS Amanda Williams President Dory Hulse Vice President Frank Maginnis Treasurer Marcia Strait Secretary Elaine Alpern Nancy Brockman Dorian Brown Joan Carrara Nancy Davis-Imhof Terry de Guzman Sandra Hodge Murray Hulse Marc Johnson Immediate Past President Kimberly Lauter Jane Colony Mills Donna Plasket David Poist Arthur Sherwood Frank Sherwood Donald Loach Music Director Emeritus Dear Friends, Would you like to reach over 3,000 area residents who love arts, culture and entertainment? Then I cordially invite you to support the Oratorio Society of Virginia by sponsoring or advertising with us for the season. Under the baton of Music Director Michael Slon, The Oratorio Society (TOSVA) has expanded its appreciative audiences and is now widely regarded as one of the preeminent community choruses in this region. Founded in 1966, the Oratorio Society is supported in a variety of wellknown area venues by those who enjoy fine music and patronize businesses and organizations that help sustain us through advertising and sponsorships. Last season, The Oratorio Society undertook several new, exciting initiatives to build partnerships and increase visibility in the area: The Burley Bearettes Young Women s Chorus and the Albemarle High School Patriot Singers joined us on stage at our Christmas at the Paramount performances; Singers from the Oratorio Society joined the Roanoke Symphony for their performance of Prokofiev s Alexander Nevsky in mid-march; TOSVA hosted a community sing-in of Vivaldi s Gloria and Mozart s Ave Verum Corpus as a benefit for PACEM, a nonprofit that works with the faith community of the greater Charlottesville area in providing temporary shelter, compassionate support, and access to services to individuals who are homeless; and For the first time ever, The Oratorio Society collaborated with Ash Lawn Opera at the Paramount to produce a semi-staged performance of Leonard Bernstein s Candide. The two May performances were enthusiastically received by near-capacity audiences. The success of these initiatives led TOSVA to plan a line-up of similarly exciting ventures for the season, to include: The Oratorio Society of Virginia PO Box 5073 Charlottesville, VA Phone Two performances of our traditional Christmas at the Paramount concert on December 20, featuring seasonal pieces with brass ensemble and Daniel Pinkham s Christmas Cantata performed in Charlottesville s historic Paramount Theater; Another community sing-in in March, to feature Schubert s Mass in G and to benefit another community organization (to be announced); A performance of Honegger s King David on June 12 at Piedmont Virginia Community College s Dickinson Theatre; and i i Dedicated to musical excellence, the Oratorio Society of Virginia enriches, inspires, and educates the community through regular performance of choral masterworks that express the best of the human spirit.

4 A collaborative performance with the Charlottesville Symphony of Beethoven s Ninth (Choral) Symphony, in celebration of the Symphony s 50 th year. With this exciting prospective season, we are hopeful that your organization will add its name to our list of sponsors and advertisers. Your sponsorship gift to the Oratorio Society which will include an ad in concert programs will help to enrich our community s cultural fabric while spotlighting your support of the arts to current and prospective customers throughout the region. A list of opportunities is included in this packet, and we would be happy to work with you to create a custom sponsorship to fit your budget and goals for exposure. A program advertisement, to the size and proportions you specify, will put your organization s name in front of an estimated 3,000 or more audience members in the coming season people who appreciate and patronize supporters of the arts in our area. Please join your fellow area businesses and organizations in sponsoring one or more Oratorio Society concerts or our entire season with your contribution or ad purchase, and help us continue to bring exceptional choral music to Charlottesville! Thank you in advance for your support, Elisabeth A. Golden Executive Director ed@oratoriosociety.org Dedicated to musical excellence, the Oratorio Society of Virginia enriches, inspires, and educates the community through regular performance of choral masterworks that express the best of the human spirit. --

5 Background of the Oratorio Society of Virginia The longest-running non-profit community chorus in Charlottesville, the Oratorio Society of Virginia presents the genius and inspiration of the greatest composers in four or five professional-level, affordable choral and orchestral concerts each year. Since its first performance of Handel s Messiah in 1968, the Oratorio Society has performed many of the greatest choral works, including Bach s Mass in B Minor, Mendelssohn s Elijah, Rossini s Stabat Mater, and Vaughan Williams A Sea Symphony along with lessfrequently performed compositions such as Duruflé s Requiem, Menotti s The Death of the Bishop of Brindisi; Barber s Prayers of Kierkegaard, and Rutter s The Reluctant Dragon. Over the past 45 years, the Society has provided a creative outlet for more than 1,500 Charlottesville-area citizens and numerous orchestral performers who accompany them, and has been the choral music performance choice for thousands of audience members. Music Director Michael Slon is known for consistently tak[ing] ensembles to the spiritual place within pieces, getting there through precision of musical execution. Maestro Slon s leadership of the 90-person chorus is attracting new and returning singers from past seasons and he is forming intriguing partnerships with other community arts groups. Our audiences have rewarded our performances with enthusiastic applause and supportive comments: GLORIOUS! Kudos all the way; best thing I ve seen this year Audience member, Candide, May 2014 What a wonderful treat for our community to have such a grand collaboration. Audience member, Candide, May 2014 After the concert I was so elevated, so inspired to just live and work, that such artistic vision is available to us. It was for me one of those higher moments never to be forgotten. Audience member, Gems of the Baroque, June 2013 Wow, what a great huge sound! I was just enthralled by such beauty! The concert was truly captivating. Audience member, Gems of the Baroque, June 2013 [Michael Slon] has artistic talent and gets so much subtlety from the chorus! Bravo! Love the music! Audience member, Christmas at the Paramount, December generous and altogether moving. Thank you (and your fine musicians and volunteers) for drawing together our community for an hour of wonders. former UVa president John Casteen, Christmas at the Paramount, December 2012 Of utmost importance to the Oratorio Society as we approach our 50 th year is engaging our community in our music, as singers and as audience. To achieve this, we are providing learning opportunities with lectures before each concert; promoting our work to organizations that have similar constituents; inviting students at UVa, PVCC, and local high schools to audition to sing with us; using social media to promote our auditions and concerts to younger audiences; and exploring working with the UVa Music Department s arts outreach program, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, UVa s Madison House, and local churches to bring more young community members to our performances. Dedicated to musical excellence, the Oratorio Society of Virginia enriches, inspires, and educates the community through regular performance of choral masterworks that express the best of the human spirit.
