1 11. PROGRAM: 8 th Grade Career Showcase AUTHOR: Genoveva Morales-Ledesma SITE OF EVENT: Washington State University, Tri-Cities PURPOSE OF EVENT The purpose of the event was to honor twenty-one outstanding 8th grade students from twenty-one middle schools throughout the state of Washington. Students earned the opportunity to present at the 8 th Grade Career Showcase, and they were provided with the chance to compete for prizes and top honors. Perhaps, the most important function of the event was to promote the culture of academic achievement among middle school students and their families. SCHOOL DESCRIPTION The event took place at Washington State University, Tri-Cities, which is a branch campus of Washington State University. PARTNERS IDENTIFIED Central Washington University, University of Washington, and Washington State University, Tri-Cities collaborated and sponsored the event. PROGRAM NARRATIVE The program began with students, families, teachers, and staff arriving from the participating schools and educational institutions. Altogether almost one hundred persons were present, including nine staff members from Washington State University, Tri-Cities. There was a welcoming talk from Genoveva Morales-Ledesma, Director, Early Outreach Programs, and dinner was served in the East Commons between 4:30 5:30.
2 At 5:30 the guests were instructed to gather in Room 266, a lecture hall close to the East Commons. The event consisted of a formal speech competition between the twenty-one students who were being honored. Genoveva introduced the rules of the contest, and also presented the four judges of the speech contest, the honored guests, and the staff members present. JR Gomez interpreted her talk into Spanish. Kristian Boyce, site director from WSU s One Vision Partnership served as timekeeper for the speeches. Each of the student participants was permitted to speak for five minutes about their chosen future career, and they were given a four-minute warning notice and strictly cut off after five minutes. The topics spoken about, the students future chosen careers, were extremely diverse: forensic scientist and crime scene investigator, attorney, youth pastor, motorcycle mechanic, engineer, author, private investigator, chef, veterinarian, public school teacher and many others. The students spoke about the economic and intrinsic rewards of the profession they were pursing, and discussed the educational training they would need to achieve their professional goals. The first prize winner spoke fluently about wanting to be a math professor, and gave the audience math questions, and presented interesting antidotes about the development of her career interest. The second prize winner talked about wanting to be an obstetrician, and the third place winner spoke of his ambition to be a naval architect. Every student participant was honored for being chosen to represent her or his school, and were given prizes. The top prize winner received a laptop computer. PRE-IMPLEMENTATION ACTIVITIES The event required considerable advanced planning, the collaboration and coordination of three universities, and the participation of administrators, faculty, students, and GEAR UP coordinators from twenty-one middle schools. One important feature of the event that had to be planned and worked out was the criteria for judging the students speeches. Seven criteria were agreed upon: 1. Introduction: Speech starts with an effective, attention arousing beginning that is precise, concise, and has a concrete statement of purpose.
3 2. Organization: Plan and layout are logical and complete; has a clear original title 3. Illustration: Visuals are effective and support written material. Uses correct voice, notes and visual aids to speak extemporaneously. 4. Language: Use appropriate language, content for particular audience 5. Effective Delivery: Eye contact is made with the audience, projects voice, good posture, enunciates clearly, varies pace, tone and pitch. 6. Conclusion: Ends speech with appropriate review and conclusion 7. Time Management: Made use of the allotted time, not exceeding the 5 minutes timeframe. A highly skilled performance of a criterion was rated 10 points, while an unskilled performance rated 2 points, for a maximum total of 70 points. IMPLEMENTATION The details of the event were well planned, and staff members worked to guarantee the success of the event, which was implemented in an orderly and efficient manner. Activities were scheduled to end at 9:30 pm, but the event was completed by 8:30 pm. IMPRESSIVE ITEMS The most impressive aspect of the event was the students themselves. For the most part, the speeches of the students were well organized, presented, and thought out. Evidently, the students had a great desire to participate in the event. One student had recently broken his jaw, but took part in the contest in spite of his injury. The first prize winner was from Toppenish Middle School, and she was especially impressive. Spanish was her native language and she had only spoken English for a few years, yet she constructed a fine speech and delivered a wonderful performance. SUMMARY OF EVENT The event honored twenty-one 8 th grade students, and they were invited to make short speeches about their future careers, and compete for top prizes. The event simulated the intense competition that high achievers frequently experience at university and in the workplace. Most importantly, the event promoted the culture of academic achievement.
