In this brochure we ll give you some useful information about our protection claims from We re really proud of our claims history. Whether it s life insurance, critical illness cover or income protection, we have a strong track record of giving our customers financial support when they need it. We paid 475m to protection customers in 2012 That s 1.3m a day Life insurance Life insurance with critical illness cover Income protection Designed to pay a cash sum in the event of your death. Life and critical illness cover pays out a lump sum if you either die or are diagnosed with a critical illness that meets our policy definition and then survive for 14 days. We only cover the critical illnesses we define in our policy and no others. Our critical illness cover is available as an option on our Term Assurance and Mortgage Life Insurance. Designed to pay you an amount each month if you can t work because you re ill or accidentally injured. For full details ask your adviser for our key features of Income Protection Solutions. Please note our protection policies have no cash in value at any time. And if you stopped paying your premiums your policy would end. In 2012 we paid out almost 14,000 claims. And compared to results published by our competitors, we paid out the highest percentage of life insurance claims received. 4 A consistent track record We have a consistent track record of paying critical illness claims and we are committed to paying as many eligible claims as possible. In some small instances where we re unable to pay a claim it s because the customer gave us incorrect or incomplete information when they applied for their policy, and this might reasonably have affected our decision to provide the policy. We call this non-disclosure. We re proud that the number of claims we ve been unable to pay due to non-disclosure has decreased significantly over the years, giving you re-assurance we ll be there for you when you make a claim. 5 Our top five critical illness claims Over 93% of our critical illness claims are made up from five conditions: cancer, heart attack, stroke, multiple sclerosis and benign brain tumour. 6 Children s critical illness cover When you take out our critical illness cover, we ll also include cover for your children for up to 25,000 per child, per policy for critical illness and 5,000 if they die, subject to our terms and conditions. In 2012 we paid out more than 600,000 in children s critical illness claims, making it that bit easier for families to cope at a really difficult time.
