4 בס''ד מנהטן כולל מנהטן ספרדיק קאנג. DE LA TABLE DU KOLLEL A LA TABLE DE CHABBAT Voici les noms des enfants d'israël qui étaient venus en Egypte avec Jacob ; chacun était venu avec sa famille. (Exode I, I) Le livre de CHEMOT dont nous commençons cette semaine la lecture, nous relate en détail l'asservissement des enfants d'israël en Egypte, leur libération de l'esclavage et leur constitution en peuple. Tout d'abord, en guise d'introduction, la première paracha du livre de CHEMOT nous énumère les noms des douze enfants d'israël qui se sont rendus en Egypte et dont les descendants ont formé le peuple d'israël. Or, ces noms, nous les connaissons déjà. Ils sont rapportés à plusieurs reprises dans le livre de CHEMOT. En particulier, la Torah nous en a fourni la liste au moment où, en compagnie de leur père Jacob, les Hébreux sont partis pour l'egypte. Alors, à quoi bon les détailler une fois encore au début de notre SIDRA? Si la Torah qui, en règle générale, s'exprime d'une façon très concise, a repris ici les noms des enfants d'israël, c'est pour nous faire comprendre - au moment où allait commencer pour les descendants de Jacob un séjour à l'étranger - l'importance qu'allaient revêtir pendant leur exil les noms hébreux qu'ils avaient. Ces noms, ils se devaient absolument de les maintenir et de les conserver si, le moment venu, quand aura sonné l'heure de la libération prévue et prédite par l'eternel, ils voulaient qu'on les retrouvât en tant qu'enfants d'israël au milieu des Egyptiens. II ne fallait pas que, tentés par l'assimilation, les Hébreux, petit à petit, en arrivent à adopter des noms égyptiens, puis la manière de vivre et de se comporter des étrangers au milieu desquels ils séjournaient provisoirement. En conservant leurs noms, ils maintenaient, en même temps, leur propre personnalité et préservaient leur véritable identité. Mais, de plus, ils gardaient, dans leur for intérieur, leur liberté malgré l'asservissement; ils conservaient enfin leur foi en un avenir meilleur, leur espoir de se retrouver un jour libres, sur leur propre terre, comme l'eternel le leur avait assuré. Aussi, la Torah a-t-elle tenu à signaler aux enfants d'israël, au moment de leur départ à l'étranger, l'extrême importance de leurs noms. Cette répétition constitue une sorte de mot d'ordre, une consigne de dernière heure, qui continue d'ailleurs à garder toute sa valeur aujourd'hui comme alors, pour tous ceux qui vivent en dehors d'israël : leurs noms hébreux constituent leur sauvegarde et sont les garants de leur identité. 5 כדורי.נט' מגיש: פנינים לפרשת השבוע "שמות", מתוך הספר "אוצר הפנינים" על התנ"ך' ואלה שמות בני ישראל הבאים מצרימה, את יעקב" )א, א(." יש להקשות, מה טעם פתח הכתוב בשם "ישראל" וסיים בשם "יעקב". ויבואר בהקדם דברי חז"ל, שאם ישראל עושים רצונו של מקום, נקראים בשם "ישראל", מלשון שררה, ואם אינם עושים רצונו של מקום, נקראים בשם "יעקב", מלשון עקב, שהוא המקום התחתון ביותר בגוף. וזהו ביאור הפסוק, "ואלה שמות בני ישראל", שהיו צדיקים גמורים לפני שבאו למצרים, ונקראו בשם "ישראל", אבל "הבאים מצרימה - את יעקב", אחר שהגיעו למצרים, שהיא ארץ הטומאה, ירדו מיד ברוחניותם ונקראו בשם "יעקב"... הבה נתחכמה לו" )א, י(" מדרש: "הבה נתחכמה לו, לבטל השבת". ולא מובן. ואפשר לבאר, בהקדים דברי המדרש, שהשר הממונה על מצרים טען לקב"ה, הללו עובדי עבודה זרה והללו עובדי עבודה זרה, וא"כ מה זכות יש לישראל שאתה גואלם. ועוד יש להקדים, הגמ' במסכת שבת )קיח:(, "כל המשמר שבת כהלכתו, אפילו עובד עבודה זרה כדור אנוש מוחלין לו". ולפי זה מובן, שהמצרים חששו שימחל לישראל עוון עבודה זרה בעבור שמירת השבת, ואם כן יגאלו, ולכן התחכמו לבטל השבת, כדי למנוע גאולתם... וכאשר יענו אותו כן ירבה וכן יפרוץ, ויקוצו מפני בני ישראל" )א, יב(" אפשר לבאר, בהקדים דברי המדרש, שבמצרים לא ראו נשות ישראל דם נדה, מפני אימת המצרים, כי בעת פחד מסתלקים הדמים. ועוד יש להקדים, הגמ' במסכת מעילה )י"ז(, שמחמת מיעוט דם נדה מתעברת האשה מהר יותר, מפני שטהורה היא לבעלה ברוב הזמן. ולכן כשגזרה המלכות שלא ישמרו ישראל את חוקי הנדה, בא אליהם רבי ראובן בן איסטרובלי במרמה, וטען להם שע"י שמירת דיני הטהרה מתמעטים ישראל, מפני שאינם מצויים הרבה אצל נשותיהם, וא"כ הגזירה אינה כדאית להם. וזהו ביאור הפסוק, "וכאשר יענו אותו", התמעטו הדמים אצל נשות ישראל, מפני אימת המצרים, וממילא היו טהורות לבעליהן רוב הזמן, ולכן "כן ירבה וכן יפרוץ"... ותאמרנה המיילדות אל פרעה, כי לא כנשים המצריות העבריות, כי חיות הנה" )א, יט(" אפשר לבאר, בהקדים הגמ' במסכת סוטה )י"ב(, שנשים צדקניות לא היו בפתקה של חוה, ולכן אין להם חבלי לידה כלל. ועוד יש להקדים, הגמ' בברכות )יח:(, שרשעים בחייהם קרויים מתים, ומאידך מצינו שצדיקים אפילו במיתתם קרויים חיים. וזהו ביאור הפסוק, "כי לא כנשים המצריות העבריות", שהמצריות אפילו בחייהם נקראות מתות, אבל העבריות אינן כן, "כי חיות הנה", שהם צדקניות ונקראות תמיד חיות, ונשים צדקניות לא היו בפתקה של חוה, ואינן צריכות למיילדת... Pharaoh's decree of annihilation against the Jewish people consisted of two parts: to throw every Jewish newborn male into the Nile, and to make live every female. The boys were to be physically murdered. The girls were to be murdered spiritually by making them live the Egyptian life, by indoctrinating them into the perverse lifestyle of Egypt. The boys were to be drowned in the Nile. The girls, too, were to be drowned in the Nile - conceptually, if not actually. The Nile, which irrigated the fields of rain-parched Egypt, was the mainstay of its economy and its most venerated god. The girls were to be raised in this cult of the river, their souls submerged in a way of life that deifies the earthly vehicle of material sustenance. In our own day, the Pharaoh-instituted practice of drowning children in the Nile is still with us: there are still parents whose highest consideration in choosing a school for their children is how it will further their child's economic prospects when the time will come for him or her to enter the job market. The people of Israel survived the Egyptian galut because there were Jewish mothers who refused to comply with Pharaoh's decree to submerge their children in his river. If we are to survive the present galut, we, too, must resist the dictates of the current Pharaohs. We must set the spiritual and moral development of our children rather than their future "earning power" and "careers" as the aim of their education.
