2 Page 2 ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW The Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that promotes energy efficiency to strengthen the economy while improving the environment. CEE is a great place to work and an even better place to lead. Mission-driven and enterprising, CEE operates out of beautiful warehouse loft offices in Minneapolis historic North Loop district. Its dynamic staff of 85 includes pragmatic environmentalists, community-oriented implementers, engineers and technical experts, and research professionals. CEE s next leader can look forward to collaborating with committed colleagues and a lean and supportive board, framed within a healthy financial structure. This is not your usual nonprofit the bulk of CEE s revenues are earned through programs and services, and it nimbly operates without annual fundraising drives, membership goals, or volunteer coordination. Leading CEE means freedom to innovate, craft supportive policies, develop powerful programs, and advance an important nonprofit mission. Data-driven and community-engaged, CEE s staff are passionate to discover and deploy the most effective solutions for a healthy, low-carbon economy. The organization works to ensure that homes and businesses spend less on energy and are more comfortable places to live and work because of CEE s: nation-leading technical research; award-winning program implementation; low-cost clean energy financing; and policy innovations that advance the public interest. CEE S APPROACH For over 35 years, CEE has been a national pioneer in energy efficiency with results to prove it. Since 1979 (originally operating as the Energy Office of Minneapolis), CEE has served more than 80,000 homes and businesses with energy-efficiency programs, provided over $200 million in energy financing, investigated over 35 million square feet of buildings to engineer energy-efficiency improvements, and conducted and disseminated more than 125 technical research projects to inform its work and the field at large. CEE s programs have saved an estimated 2,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity and prevented about 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide from reaching the atmosphere, all while making energy more affordable and the economy more productive. CEE s staff supports a wide range of efforts through six core strategies: 1. Research Staff conduct technology and market assessments to identify tomorrow s clean energy strategies. For over 35 years, CEE s researchers have produced technical studies on building science, mechanical system performance, and program policy design. 2. Programs By using the latest behavioral research and a one-stop approach, CEE s programs overcome barriers that many homeowners and business owners face when considering energy improvements. Successes include the One-Stop Efficiency Shop lighting program, Energy Fit Homes certifications, and Home Energy Squad energy assessments. 3. Engineering Services CEE s engineers provide technical assistance for commercial and industrial buildings with a commitment to practical solutions for complex issues. Engineers focus on a variety of systems and equipment from building automation systems to ventilation and lighting. Business clients include the Hotel Ivy and IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis.
3 Page 3 4. Lending Center A non-traditional lender, CEE offers competitive terms, technical assistance, and flexible financing for Minnesota businesses, nonprofits, homeowners, and multifamily property owners for energy efficiency and rehabilitation, often in partnership with the MN Housing Finance Agency, energy companies, cities, and the MN Dept. of Commerce. 5. Engagement & Education Sharing knowledge is critical to CEE s mission. Staff transform research and program expertise into resources for practitioners and leaders to advance the energy efficiency field. From classrooms to building control rooms, CEE engages diverse audiences, whether they are researching new technologies or debating policy options. 6. Policy CEE seeks collaborative progress on clean energy issues, supported by research and guided by a public-interest ethic. CEE s recommendations helped the City of Minneapolis, Xcel Energy, and CenterPoint Energy establish the nation-leading Minneapolis Clean Energy Partnership. CEE also co-directs the e21 Initiative to develop a new utility business model to encourage positive industry transformations. Every day, CEE collaborates with utilities, governments, nonprofits, and businesses to deliver actionable research and innovative programs, providing real-world, local models for communities around the country to reduce energy waste and harmful emissions. And everything CEE learns, it shares through reporting to help inform best practices in energy efficiency and related fields. CEE s next leader will join this team working on the front lines of an emerging energy economy reducing greenhouse gas emissions, slowing the march of climate change, and securing a healthy, lowcarbon economy for future generations. Through CEE s own efforts and robust collaborations with key partners, you ll be working to improve the environment, increase economic productivity, and empower businesses and families to take control of their energy bills. MINNESOTA: PRIMED FOR PROGRESS Minnesota is a recognized leader in energy policy, having initiated energy-efficiency programs and renewables integration decades ago. Minnesota s energy community has embraced pragmatic policy, where stakeholder collaboration and trust build smart policies that are supported by data, which allow for piloting and refinement of next generation ideas. Minnesota s leading utility policies and programs have also been developed in a way that keeps retail energy prices lower than half of all U.S. states. As noted in a July 2015 New York Times article on the Clean Power Plan rollout: Minnesota has been reining in its utilities carbon pollution for decades not painlessly, but without breaking much of a sweat, either. Minnesota s track record of pragmatic collaboration positions the state to make real progress on current industrywide clean energy transitions. Current opportunities include innovative partnerships such as the e21 Initiative to develop the next generation, customer-centric utility business model, development of grid modernization policy to reduce the environmental impact of the utility sector, and local governmentutility partnerships that are forging unique community-driven program designs. The Twin Cities metro thrives through the growth of the local creative economy. Fueled by a nationally recognized high quality of life and low cost of living plus bustling local food and outdoor scenes, this dynamic region has become a notable hub for creative class workers, entrepreneurs, and technology experts. The urban reinvigoration is evident in everything from a highly qualified employee base to emerging opportunities for energy innovation in the built environment.
