The National Healthy Schools Programme and Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status What is the National Healthy Schools Programme? The National Healthy Schools Programme is an exciting long-term initiative that helps young people and their schools to be healthy. We are making a difference to the health and achievement of young people in thousands of schools across England. Healthy Schools help children and young people to reach their potential by building on a solid foundation of health to do better in learning and in life. Children in Healthy Schools tell us that they feel healthier, happier and safer. Their parents tell us that they feel more involved in their child s health and learning and often feel better themselves. Schools tell us that the Healthy Schools programme has brought sustained improvement in behaviour, standards of work and school management. The impact of our programme is based on a whole-school approach to physical and emotional well-being focused on four core themes: Personal, Social & Health Education; Healthy Eating; Physical Activity; and Emotional Health & Wellbeing. The whole-school approach involves working with children and young people, parents, school staff and the whole school community to provide a solid foundation from which developments and improvement are embedded in a systematic way. These processes contribute to the physical and emotional development of all members of the school community. The National Healthy Schools Programme aims to deliver real benefits for children and young people by supporting children and young people in developing healthy behaviours, helping to reduce health inequalities, helping to promote social inclusion, and helping to raise the achievement of children and young people. What is Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status? A number of schools that have achieved National Healthy School Status are now working towards broadening and deepening the Healthy Schools themes within school and creating other opportunities to promote health throughout the school day. In Surrey, this is known as Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status. Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status has been developed to further support the National Healthy Schools Programme as well as a whole-school approach to the Every Child Matters (ECM) Agenda. It is an award scheme for any school that would like to broaden and deepen work into one or more of the Healthy Schools themes/criteria. 1
Why Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status is so important for schools There are numerous reasons why Healthy Schools Plus - Enhanced Status is so important for schools and these may influence why a school decides to embark upon it. Several of these reasons are listed below: To further embed the Healthy Schools ethos To ensure the school community continues to promote Healthy Schools To ensure that the Every Child Matters agenda is a priority To ensure that schools are looking for ways in which to meet whole-school community needs To help ensure that supportive links are made between the Every Child Matters agenda, Healthy Schools and other awards and projects To ensure that activities/projects undertaken in school are streamlined by having common goals clear objectives and milestones identified needs To support the re-application for National Healthy Schools Status after the initial 3-year period To aim to make continuous improvements in school Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status: how does it work? There are 2 options for schools to choose from: Option 1: An existing award or initiative which links to and enhances provision within one or more of the Healthy Schools themes Option 2: A school-specific activity or project, where schools choose their own activity or project that is appropriate for their school and is based on identified need. The activity or project can be linked to one or more of the Healthy Schools themes. Some examples to help you choose your option Please note that this list of examples is not exhaustive and we welcome ideas from schools that would like to explore alternative awards, initiatives, activities or projects. 2
Option 1: Existing award or initiative. Choose and complete an already existing award or initiative. Some ideas are listed below. Award / initiative ideas The Healthy Schools Themes Rights Respecting Schools Award (UNICEF) Safer Surrey Schools Award Sustainability/Eco Schools Join the Let s Get Cooking project Investors in Careers Food for Life Partnership Mark Establish 5 hours per week of physical activity for every child International Schools Award 1. PSHE, including Drug Education and Sex and Relationships Education 2. Healthy Eating 3. Physical Activity 4. Emotional Health and Well-Being More details about many of these awards, activities and projects can be found on the Surrey Healthy Schools Programme website: on the Enhanced Status page. Note Please note that school will only be awarded Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status if they achieve external awards after having been awarded National Healthy Schools Status. Your school will not be eligible for Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status if you already hold one of these awards before completing the National Healthy Schools Programme, as the purpose of doing Enhanced Status is to further develop your school s health work. 3
Option 2: School-specific activity or project option. Choose an activity/project that is appropriate for your school and that spans one or more of the HS themes. There are many different ways to fulfil Option 2, that is, cross-theme options and single theme options. Cross-theme examples could include: Activity/project ideas Healthy Schools Themes (1-4) Set up a health clinic on the school site. The health clinic could offer health advice and support to the whole-school community in all areas of health (e.g. sexual health, physical health, mental health, etc.) Themes 1-4 Establish an obesity-reduction project Themes 2, 3 and 4 Set up activities/projects that fulfil the Extended Services core offer, and involve all members of the school community (including parents/carers) Themes 1-4 Establish restorative practices in your school Themes 1 and 4 Set up a Healthy Families club for parents, grandparents, carers and children. This club could focus on physical activity and emotional health and well-being, the local environment and safety issues, or practical parenting and cooking classes. Themes 1-4 4
Single-theme examples could include: Activity/project ideas Healthy Schools Theme Establish a Drug Education and/or Sex and Relationships Education drop-in centre for pupils 1. PSHE, including Drug Education and Sex and Relationships Education Create a sustainable cooking or gardening club Set up a SNAG a school nutrition action group 2. Healthy Eating Establish a new activity club for pupils and families Set up a new staff sports club 3. Physical Activity Establish a sustainable peer mentoring or peer mediation service Invite Family Links in to school to train staff and support parents/carers Create a chill-out room that the whole school can use Establish a transition project for KS1 to KS2, or KS2 to KS3 Become a SEAL lead practice school 4. Emotional Health and Well-Being 5
Important considerations for your activity/project You will need to fulfil the following criteria: 1. There must be a recognised need within your whole-school community for a new activity/project. 2. You must be able to support your activity/project proposal with relevant data (qualitative and quantitative) to explain why your school would benefit from doing a new activity/project. Once the activity/project is running, you must be able to show continued impact and development via a continuous evaluation process. 3. Any new activity/project must be sustainable and have the intention of demonstrating improvement or change. 4. Your activity/project will need to be included in your school development plan (SDP). Your school will receive a Healthy Schools Plus Enhanced Status certificate and logo. Your SIP/Attached Consultant will be informed of your achievement and your school will appear on the Surrey Healthy Schools website. The Healthy School Plus project will be evidence to support your reapplication for National Healthy Schools Status after your initial 3-year period. What if our application is unsuccessful?
