In the current research we explore (i) the diverse ways that a brand may intentionally or unintentionally signal values, (ii) which consumers emphasize certain values more than others and why, and (iii) the implications of this for brand attitudes, perceptions of a brand s status as a cultural icon, purchase intentions, and consumer-related policy. Because brands can serve as symbols of one s society and culture (Holt 2004; McCracken 1986), how a brand is perceived may often be determined by the ideological lens through which the consumer views and evaluates the brand. Drawing from system justification theory (Jost and Banaji 1994) and basic values research (Schwartz 1994), we posit that consumers vary in how satisfied they are with society and how it operates, and that this is related to the different values that consumers endorse. Thus, a consumer s satisfaction with society and the values they hold will influence their perceptions of and attitudes toward brands that fit or do not fit with these values and how they want society to operate. Six studies support our hypotheses across a number of brands and brand-relevant policies. 8
