Veritas Communications Date: April 2012 Everest: Funeral Planning Research Industry snap shot and opportunities

National Research Findings Canadians are unprepared and underinsured 64% have never planned a funeral. Only 10% have pre-planned their funeral. Only one-third (33%) of Canadians have insurance to cover costs of the funeral. Takeaway: Canadians have no experience, no plan, no insurance.

National Research Findings Canadians want to be prepared Three-quarters of Canadians (74%) say that having the option to pay for their funeral in advance as part of their life insurance package is appealing. This preference for pre-planning increases with age and among women. 75% of women are more likely to think pre-planning is better alternative vs 64% of men. Two-in-five Canadians say they are likely to pre-plan for their own funeral within the next five years. Takeaway: There is market demand.

National Research Findings Canadians funeral concerns and priorities 1. Not being able to afford it (46%). 2. Not knowing where to start (37%). 3. Being taken advantage of (36%). The most commonly cited reason to pre-plan: 84% of seniors say to make it easier on family. Takeaway: We can make it easier.

National Research Findings Everest s unique service addresses Canadians needs and concerns Not being able to afford it Solution: Everest saves a family thousands of dollars on average compared to planning with a funeral home. Don t know where to start Solution: Everest s planning information and helpful advisors provide families access to un-biased third party advice and someone to execute all the details per the clients request. Fear of being taken advantage of Solution: Everest s independent advocates work for the client, not the funeral home, allowing the family time to focus on what s important as opposed to making arrangements.

National Research Findings Canadians are interested in the Everest service Over half of Canadians (55%) are interested in hearing more about Everest. Interest in Everest services increases by 59% upon learning that the services are being offered through a financial institution. Four-out-of-five (83%) would purchase a service like Everest for themselves. More than one-third (37%) would purchase it for their spouse and 23% would purchase for their parents. Takeaway: We have a great opportunity.

Addendum: Research Findings

Objectives and Methodology The survey consisted of 38 questions, including demographics, and was completed on-line from March 2 to 7, 2012 using Research Now s online panel. A total of 1,167 Canadian adults were surveyed, which included an oversample of 170 females between the ages of 45 and 65 years of age. Quota sampling and weighting were employed to balance demographics and ensure the sample s composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data. Because the sample is based on those who initially self-selected for participation, no estimates of sampling error can be calculated. On some questions throughout the report, comparisons are made to a telephone survey conducted in March 2003 among 895 Canadians 45 years of age and over.

Thinking back to the most recent funeral planned, 10% of Canadians began the planning ahead of time, with women 55+ among the most likely to have done so. 18% of Canadians have pre-planned either their own funeral (9%), that of their spouse s (4%), and/or that of someone else s (10%). The majority of Canadians 55+ who have not pre-planned their funeral are likely to do so within the next 5 years. Interest in Everest services increases by 11% among women 55+ upon learning that the services are being offered through a financial institution.

Over a third (36%) of Canadians have planned a funeral, with 28% of them saying their most recent funeral planning experience was pre-planned (10% overall preplan incidence) Planned after the person had passed away 72% No 64% Yes 36% Question: Have you ever planned a funeral for someone? (n = 1,167) Planned beforehand 28% Question: [If answered YES to Have you ever planned a funeral for someone? ] Thinking back to the most recent funeral you planned; did you begin this planning before the person had passed away, or after they had passed on? (n = 430)

While men and women are equally likely to have planned a funeral in the past (36%, respectively), women are slightly more likely to have begun the planning before the person had passed away (30% vs. 25% of men). Women 55 + are the most likely to have both planned a funeral in the past (64%) and begun their planning ahead of time (40%). Have Planned Funeral % Planned Beforehand % GENDER Male Female GENDER + AGE Male 18 to Male 35 to Male Female 18 to Female 35 to Female In general, having planned the last funeral beforehand increases steadily with age. (n = 430)

A majority (57%) of those who have planned a funeral in the past say they would be more likely to pre-plan their own funeral now that they know what is entailed. Likelihood to pre-plan is fairly consistent across all demographics. Yes 57% No 16% Don't know 27% Question: [If answered YES to Have you ever planned a funeral for someone? ] Based on the time and effort involved in planning a funeral, would you be more likely to pre-plan your own funeral now that you know what is entailed? (n = 430)

Purchasing life insurance and preparing a will are the two most common preparations survey respondents have made. But 9% say they have done pre-planning of their own funeral, consistent with earlier findings.
