Urban Habitat Chicago Institute presents Homemade Solar No Panels Required!
What Is Solar Energy? Passive Solar: has few moving parts, and requires minimal maintenance and require no mechanical systems. Active Solar: everything else.

Why is it good? Cheaper than active solar system More reliable than other sources Very unlikely to explode in our lifetime (no Fukushima) Our bodies are built for it.

Basics of Heat & Sun Heat Transfer in 3 Ways
Heat Transfers in 3 ways: 1. Convection: why hot air balloon can float
Heat Transfers in 3 ways: 1. Convection 2. Conduction: how you burn yourself drinking that coffee
Heat Transfers in 3 ways: 1. Convection 2. Conduction 3. Radiation: how the sand on the beach gets so hot...and usually in combinations.

But, I Want Shiny Toys Laundromat dryer: $1.00 a load Clothesline: $12 for 100 feet of cotton line Break even in 12 loads If you do two loads a week: 12 loads = 6 weeks!
But, I Want Shiny Toys Solar Photovoltaic Panel (average cost in Illinois in 2013): At $4.25/Watt, A 2kW system = $8,500 (8 panels or so, not counting any incentives)
But, I Want Shiny Toys Solar Photovoltaic Panel = $8,500 Average Sunlight = 4.2 hours a day 2kW array generates 8.4 kwh a day Average household uses 30 kwh a day An average household in Chicago would pay ComEd $0.106 per kwh (about $93 a month) 8.4kWh x = $0.804 saving per day Break even in 10,572 days (28.9 years)
But, I Want Shiny Toys Solar Photovoltaic Panel = $8,500 Average Sunlight = 4.2 hours a day 2kW array generates 8.4 kwh a day I use 6.6 kwh a day at $0.189 per kwh to ComEd 8.4kWh x = $1.59 saving per day Break even in 5,346 days (14.6 years)
But, I Want Shiny Toys Solar Photovoltaic Panel = $5,000 (with current Illinois incentive at $1.50 per watt) 2kW array generates 8.4 kwh a day I use 6.6 kwh a day at $0.189 per kwh to Comed 8.4kWh x = $1.59 saving per day Break even in 3,145 days (8.6 years)
What does it all mean? Active Solar System is financially viable IF you first reduce your energy use. Passive Solar is much cheaper and easier to implement. Passive Solar might be more labor intensive, but less likely to break and cheaper to fix. Which is better for you? It is all up to you.
