3 The prgramme has been develped with Oxfrd Brkes University and has a prject element s that students can tailr their curse t the needs f industry. The prgramme will utilise its facilities t prvide students with the same pprtunities as thse n similar curses ffered at Oxfrd Brkes University. Chrt size will fllw a similar pattern t that f the in-huse BSc (Hns) curse and will allw natural prgressin in a familiar envirnment t that f the previus curse studied (i.e. Extended Diplma in Engineering). Lcal emplyers such as CCFE (Culham), Cbham Technical Services and STFC are regularly cntacted t ensure the prgramme s relevance t industry and that the facilities, sftware and equipment are t the crrect standards. Students are able t carry ut wrk placements during the first year; part-time students are usually in cntinuus emplyment in Engineering. Visits t industry and guest speakers are als a cmmn theme within the curse. Graduates frm the curse will have a range f skills and knwledge t help them prgress int the wrkplace r nt a higher level degree curse. 2.2 Aim/s f the prgramme The Fundatin Degree in Electrical and Electrnic Engineering is designed t meet the fllwing aims: t prvide a prfessinal fundatin fr a range f technical and management careers in Electrical and Electrnic Engineering; t prvide a brad range f studies directly relevant t a wide range f Engineering related careers; t enable students t make an immediate cntributin in their current emplyment thrugh skills learnt and in particular via a wrk related prject; t prvide flexibility, knwledge, skills and mtivatin as a basis fr career develpment and as a basis fr prgressin t graduate and pstgraduate studies; t develp students' ability in Engineering thrugh effective use and cmbinatin f the knwledge and skills gained in different parts f the prgramme and in the wrkplace; t develp a range f skills and techniques, persnal qualities and attitudes essential fr reflective learning and practice leading t successful perfrmance in wrking life thrugh the integrated assessment f graduate attributes; t prvide individuals with skills necessary t prgress their career in Electrical and Electrnic Engineering; t prvide pathways nt full Engineering Degrees at Oxfrd Brkes r ther Universities. At Brkes, this can mean jining a ne-year tp-up prgramme that leads t a BSc (Hns) degree in Electrnic Engineering, r the secnd year f a BEng (Hns) prgramme. 6 SECTION 5: PROGRAMME DELIVERY 5.1 Teaching, Learning and Assessment The Curse has been designed t meet the University s aims f widening participatin, bth in mde f delivery and recruitment. The prgramme is targeted at a grup underrepresented in Higher Educatin and aims t develp their academic achievement thrugh practical cursewrk assignments and wrk based learning. The ratinale fr and pattern f assessment are based n the aims, learning utcmes and ratinale f the curse and align with the Oxfrd Brkes Assessment Cmpact The key criteria gverning assessment will be validity, reliability and fitness fr purpse and will including case studies, assignments, time-cnstrained assessments and wrk-based prjects. Each single undergraduate mdule is 150 hurs f effrt. Mdules presently cnsist f 54 hurs cntact time and are delivered using a mixture f lectures, tutrial/seminar sessins and labratries. A student can expect t undertake an additinal 100 hurs f independent wrk per single mdule (214 fr the duble-mdule prject). In any given week a student s cntact time may be as high as sixteen hurs r as lw as ten hurs depending n scheduling f labratry and wrkshp timetables. The use and distributin f labratry wrk varies significantly between mdules and mdule levels n the prgramme and is allcated as apprpriate by the subject specialist in each area. Teaching and Learning Methds Teaching methds vary frm mdule t mdule. Usually they include lectures, labratrybased practical activities and sftware simulatins, prblem-slving classes and tutrial supprt, ften supplemented by hand-uts and bklets prduced by staff. Assignment briefs, curse ntes and Internet links are prvided thrugh the Mdle VLE t help t engage and encurage students with their learning, and t ensure that wrk-based learners can access materials when they are nt able t attend classes. Teaching and learning methds used thrughut the prgramme will acknwledge and encurage a range f learning styles, including develpment f research skills thrugh assignment wrk. The prgramme aims t balance the prvisin f infrmatin with pprtunities fr students t assimilate, apply and critically reflect. Teaching and learning strategies will: Intrduce, and encurage students t engage in, new areas f knwledge; students will als be given the pprtunity t expand their existing knwledge Give students the pprtunity t acquire practical experience in activities related t their emplyment, especially thrugh tw wrk-based mdules and a wrk-based prject Encurage students t reflect critically n new knwledge and understanding, and thrugh the Study Skills mdule n their wn learning experience. The graduate attributes are develped thrugh a series f theretical and practical prblems r prfessinal briefs that need t be cmpleted r slved; this culd be thrugh practical applicatin f theries, the implementatin f existing prcesses r by devising new slutins t practical prblems. Lectures are particularly used t furnish the fundatins and framewrk that will enable the students t attain the knwledge and understanding utcmes fr the mdule, als where apprpriate sme f the prfessinal and transferable

7 skills. Wrkshps and prblem-slving sessins reinfrce student acquisitin f the knwledge and learning utcmes f the mdule. They als prepare the students fr assessed wrk and reinfrce students ability t slve prblems. Practical assignments and wrkplace practice further reinfrce the prcess f acquisitin f knwledge and understanding, but are als pivtal fr the develpment f the majrity f the disciplinary/prfessinal skills. Grup design exercises prepare the students fr teamwrk, develpment f interpersnal skills, wrking t deadlines, independent thinking and the ability t rganise themselves. Tutrials are used t give frmative and summative feedback n assessed wrk, in alignment with Brkes Assessment Cmpact, t supprt student understanding f the learning utcmes f the mdule and t help students t imprve their future wrk. Assessment Assessment is cnducted thrugh a balance f examinatin and cursewrk, varying frm mdule t mdule: fr example 100% cursewrk in the wrk-based mdules, 80% examinatin, 20% cursewrk in Mathematics fr Engineers. The examinatins assess the understanding and cnslidatin f the curse material. Cursewrk is an imprtant element f assessment, and is highly valued by students fr the feedback it gives them n their wrk. This feedback is nrmally prvided by the tutr n the Feedback Sheet which will be attached t the Student s wrk. Fr cursewrk, a large variety f assignments are used, depending upn the subject. The type f assignment set is described in the syllabus, but will include tasks such as: ral presentatins; shrt design studies; prblem sheets; shrt tests dne in class; write-ups f labratry experiments technical reprts Many f the Cursewrk Assignments will be based n mdern industry practice. These will include: Circuit simulatin, using industry-standard sftware PLC prgramming using mdern PLCs The wrk-based prject is assessed thrugh a cmbinatin f a technical reprt and a presentatin t peers, teaching staff, and (where cmmercial cnstraints permit) emplyers. The Prgramme cnsists f 15 mdules, each carrying 15 CATS pints (120 at Level 4, 120 at Level 5) except the wrkbased prject (30 CATS pints at Level 5). All mdules are cmpulsry. Part-time students will nrmally cmplete 5 mdules in each year with the prject in Year 3; full-time students cmplete 8 mdules in Year 1 and 7 (including the prject) in Year 2. The award f a Fundatin Degree will be given n successful cmpletin f all mdules (240 credits)

8 The award f a Certificate f Higher Educatin at Level 4 is available n successful cmpletin f 8 mdules, f which at least 6 must be at Level 4. The Certificate f Higher Educatin is an exit award nly. 5.2 Assessment regulatins The prgramme cnfrms t the University Regulatins which can be fund at: SECTION 6: ADMISSIONS 6.1 Entry criteria Entrants shuld nrmally pssess the fllwing: Either: a minimum f tw years' relevant wrk experience and a current rle in an apprpriate wrkplace setting, and a line manager's letter f supprt and recmmendatin Or: a minimum f ne pass at A-level (in Maths, Physics r a clsely related subject) r 6-unit Vcatinal A- level, plus a minimum f fur passes at GCSE (grades A-C) including Mathematics and English language Or: a Natinal Certificate r Diplma r ther equivalent qualificatin, such as GNVQ/NVQ r ther Level 3 qualificatin, in a discipline related t Engineering 6.2 CRB checks CRB checks are nt applicable t this prgramme. SECTION 7: STUDENT SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE During inductin week, students are issued with handbks and ther relevant dcumentatin explaining the hw the curse is structured and what will be expected f them during their studies with bth AWC and Brkes. The Curse Leader, Prgramme Lead and Persnal Tutrs are available fr cnsultatin during this first week n the curse. Thrughut the prgramme, mdule handbks and nline resurces are available thrugh the virtual learning envirnment; these resurces prvide a great deal f guidance fr students. In additin students can get help and guidance frm their Curse Leader and their Persnal Tutr. They are als able t btain Mdule-specific advice frm the Mdule Leaders and any f the staff teaching n the relevant mdule. A full range f supprt services is ffered t students seeking guidance n their current curse, including Central Supprt Services, Study Skills Develpment and Supprt and advice n careers in Engineering.

9 SECTION 8: GRADUATE EMPLOYABILITY Frm a Fundatin Degree level, students have gne n t further higher educatin t tp up t BSc (Hns) degree, whilst thers have gne n t be technicians, engineers and designers in disciplines f Electrical and Electrnic Engineering, Autmtive Engineering and Fusin Research. SECTION 9: LINKS WITH EMPLOYERS The Cllege has develped clse links with many Engineering emplyers thrugh wrk experience placements. Thrughut the year the sectin may have visiting speakers that are linked t mdules being studies at the time. Links with emplyers cme in a variety f disciplines but include: BMW CCFE (including lectures at CCFE) Natinal Instruments STFC SECTION 10: QUALITY MANAGEMENT The prgramme adheres t the natinally accepted benchmark statements fr Engineering. Other indicatrs f quality are: Annual evaluatins f the prgramme by the External Examiner; Feedback frm students in the annual evaluatins and at the end f each mdule; Emplyment success rate f current and past graduates in engineering; Feedback btained frm the cmpanies wh emply ur students; Peridic review.
