1 BROADWAY SENIOR NEWSLETTER Counseling Department February 2016 Volume 7 Reminders: February - Financial Aid Awareness Month * College-bound seniors make sure you file your FAFSA Before your college s priority filing date! (available on their website) * Keep your counselor updated on your plans for after high school! * Accepted to a college/university? Come sign your name to our College Board in the Counseling Office! FREE FAFSA WORKSHOPS The BRCC Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships will be conducting financial aid workshops in February and March. Students can get help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and scholarship applications. All workshops are held in the Plecker Workforce Center computer labs. No registration necessary; stop by anytime during any of the workshops. 2 Current bank statements Current business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, stock, bond, and other investment records THE HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA IS NOT GOING TO CUT IT ANYMORE. ACCORDING TO THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS OCCUPATIONAL OUTLOOK HANDBOOK IN THE YEAR 2018, 80% OF JOBS IN VIRGINIA WILL NEED MORE TRAINING THAN JUST THE HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. NOT EVERYONE HAS TO GO THE COLLEGE TO GET MORE TRAINING IT COULD BE ON THE JOB TRAINING, MILITARY TRAINING, TECHNICAL SCHOOL, 2 YEAR COLLEGE OR 4 YEAR COLLEGE TRAINING, BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS MOST PEOPLE WILL NEED MORE TRAINING, AND EVEN IF ITS ADDITIONAL TRAINING THROUGH A CERTIFICATE PROGRAM, THE MORE EDUCATION/TRAINING YOU GET, THE BETTER THE JOB OPPORTUNITIES ARE FOR YOU. You can compare colleges, search for scholarships, request transcripts and teacher recommendations all using Naviance. Log into your Naviance account with your PowerSchool username and password. All Scholarship applications are to be turned in to Mrs Morris in the Counseling Office by due date written on the application, unless noted that student is to mail. Awards - $1000 to one male and one female. Deadline April 29 Buick Achievers Scholarship Program Criteria: Plan to enroll full time in the fall, plan to study engineering, technology, design or business. Deadline Feb 27. Award - 50 $25,000 apply online at Daily News Record Leadership Award Criteria: Leadership, character, essay, recommendations. Award - $10,000. One winner per RCPS school! Deadline March 4 Dennis Chip Taylor Memorial Scholarship Criteria: Planning a career in Fire and Rescue, essay. Award - $500. Due by March 24 or mail yourself by April 4 Dennis R & Patricia R Early Scholarship Fund Criteria: Be accepted to Blue Ridge, Bridgewater College, JMU or EMU; Plan to obtain a degree with a math or science concentration. Preference given to military families. GPA of 3.0 or higher. Award - $4000. Apply online by March 1

Deadline March 15 George W Shreckhise Memorial Scholarship Criteria: For students that will be attending Blue Ridge and major in Horticulture/Arboriculture or transfer to VA Tech to obtain their Bachelors in Life Sciences or Agriculture, or plan to attend Va Tech and major in Ag or Life Sciences. Award - various Virginia Sports Information Directors Rich Murray Journalism Scholarship Criteria: Plans to study journalism, communication, public relations or sports management. Award - $1000. Due March 25 Willard G Pentl Aviation Scholarship Criteria: GPA of 3.75 or higher; essay. Award - $1000.
