The VF s are usually for systems such as household sanitary, septic, aerated wastewater treatment plants, grease traps, grey water treatment and on-site treatment plants. The GM s are typically for sewer air release valves, sewer pressure main discharge MH s and smaller sewage pump stations. The larger VF filters and the GM filters can be fitted with wind assisted fans in order to extract air flows from the system. VF and GM odour filters have very low operation and maintenance costs and inspection requirements. The VF and GM odour filters achieve up to 99% H 2 S gas removal through adsorption and treatment processes when installed and operated in accordance with product specifications. Olfactory Unit removal rates have yet to be determined. 1.1 Technology Background The McBerns odour filters utilise a combination of zeolites, oxidising agents and microporous, impregnated, pelletised activated carbon media for the treatment of waste airstreams containing noxious gases. 1.2 Scope This standard specification details design and performance requirements for the McBerns VF and GM odour filters. 1.3 Application The McBerns filters provide a means of odour management by removing odours in waste air streams. Gases may contain toxic and odorous compounds, including hydrogen sulphide gas, acidic gases, volatile organic compounds (VOC s) and hydrocarbons. The VF and GM odour filters operate by adsorbing and retaining chemical compounds, which may undergo chemical conversion and/or biological treatment. 2 MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS The VF and GM odour filters are constructed primarily from upvc Australian Standards approved components, including the filter housing and replaceable cartridges. All VF and GM odour filters have a polyurethane high gloss coating that contains anti-corrosion Associate Member of: 1

2 chemicals offering excellent corrosion protection. All fixtures are stainless steel. Where required, filter media is separated by geo-fabric or polyester wadding. Rubber seals are used to seal cartridges to the filter body. The cartridge media is blended to suit the waste airstream being treated. Odour filter materials and components adhere to the following standards and/or McBerns documentation: McBerns product-specific odour filter general arrangement drawing including schedule of individual components and schedule of materials Connecting pipework and fittings in accordance with all relevant Australian Standards Container upvc or steel components in accordance with all relevant Australian Standards including but not limited to: o AS/NZS 1260:2009 PVC-U pipes and fittings for drain, waste and vent applications o AS/NZS 1477 PVC pipes and fittings for pressure applications o AS/NZS 2032:2006 Installation of PVC systems Ventilator (i.e. on optional vent pole) Edmonds Hurricane S2 Ventilator, Technical Data Sheet No Filter cartridge - AS/NZS 1260:2009 PVC-U pipes and fittings for drain, waste and vent applications Filter media Refer to McBerns media product specifications and MSDS relevant to each product. 2.1 Corrosion-Resistant Materials The external housing and enclosure for the VF and GM odour filters are internally and externally coated with a polyurethane high gloss coating with anti-corrosion properties. 2.2 Sealing Gaskets Gaskets shall be resistant to the sewage gases, temperature or environmental conditions to which the gasket will be subjected in service. 2.3 Filter Media The McBerns VF and GM odour filter media shall have: Proven capabilities to treat odours and chemical compounds from the waste airstream by adsorption and chemical conversion Adequate surface area in the filter media to treat the specified concentrations and air flow rates of the waste airstream. 3 DESIGN The combined filter media shall meet the following design requirements: Associate Member of: 2

3 The filter media is a homogeneous material that provides uniform airflow distribution and maintains a low head loss across the filter (i.e. low resistance to air flow) Treatment capacity meets or exceeds the project specific design requirements Resistance to corrosion is a key design input due to the nature of gases being treated Ongoing operation and maintenance costs and labour are minmised Refer to Appendix A Technical Data and the relevant VF and GM odour filter general arrangement drawings for model specific performance and technical specifications. 3.1 General Performance McBerns VF and GM odour filters are designed to achieve up to 99% H 2 S gas reduction in non-condensed air at the specified gas concentration range and for a nominated contact time of 3, 5 or 10 seconds depending on waste air stream characteristics. The odour filters are designed to operate within a temperature range of C. 3.2 Dimensions The dimensions of the odour filter shall be determined by the gas concentration and flow rate of the inlet waste airstream. The dimensions of the odour filter housing shall be in accordance with the published product specification and site specific requirements. 3.3 Design Loads The VF and GM odour filters are not designed to withstand structural design loads. Placement on-site shall be considered in the overall site design and include a suitable foundation. On-site assembly of components including upvc housing, stainless steel fixtures and gas tight seals may be required. Vandalism proof measures shall be incorporated in the overall site design. 3.4 Fasteners Fasteners such as bolts, screws, nuts and washers shall comply with AS :2000, AS :2000, AS and AS Filter Media Cartridges The filter media cartridges are designed to: Support the filter media in separate layers Permit easy access for maintenance and filter media cartridge exchange Permit safe handling and replacement of the filter media cartridge Be free draining to prevent water-logging of the filter media Associate Member of: 3

4 Be individually isolated for inspection or media cartridge replacement. 3.6 Extractor Fan The wind assisted extractor fan is constructed from corrosion-resistant materials and sized for the design air flow rate and pressure loss across the filter system. Extraction fans shall comply with the noise limitations set by the relevant Environmental Regulator. 3.7 Remote Gas Monitoring Remote gas monitoring is typically not required with the VF and GM odour filter units. However, these models can be modified to incorporate the ability to grab sample or continuously sample the treated waste air. 3.8 Interchangeability All components shall be interchangeable between odour filters of the same size and/or type manufactured by McBerns. 3.9 Asset Life Stainless steel and stainless steel fittings have a 30 year life All upvc and PE fittings have a 10 year life All coatings have a 5 year life Installation Refer to the McBerns product specific installation instruction sheet. 4 COMMISSIONING & TESTING It is not possible to conduct treatment performance tests on the VF and GM odour filters prior to installation as each site will have unique and varying contaminant concentrations, flow rates and flow characteristics. It is recommended that following installation, conduct inlet and outlet H2S gas and air flow rate monitoring over a period of four (4) weeks to establish the H2S gas levels from the source and to determine the odour filters treatment efficiency under those conditions. It is most advantageous to conduct this testing during the warmest months of the year and during the highest air flow rates. Sampling and testing is conducted in order to verify that the system achieves the specified H2S gas reduction, or as specified by the asset owner. Additional test parameters of the waste air stream inflow to the odour filter include humidity and the presence of other sulphur containing gases. If the filter fails to achieve the specified H2S gas reduction or operate within specified noise requirements after the initial testing phase, faults shall be identified and corrected prior to re- Associate Member of: 4

Following a further period of 2-4 weeks, repeat testing to ensure the odour filter is capable of meeting the performance specification. 5 OPERATION & MAINTENANCE 5.1 Filter Media Replacement Typical change-over frequency of the VF and GM odour filters is between 18 months and 2 years. The filter media cartridge replacement frequency is dependent on the waste air inflow characteristics over its operational lifetime. Refer to Appendix A Technical Data for recommended inspection frequencies for the VF and GM odour filter models.
