1 Hope College Summer Science & More Camps 2013 Descriptions Session 1: Super Science Sampler June Looking for a mix? This camp will have different themes each day from our K-2 camps.club Vet, Creepy Crawlies, Prehistoric Planet, and Pirates Cove. Session 2: Lego I June Grades 2-5 9:00-12:00 Welcome to the exciting world of Lego Robotics, NXT style. Get an introduction to machines, robot construction, programming and teamwork as your group builds robots and completes challenges. Session 3: Classic Cartooning A Googenius Camp June Grades :00-12:00 Cost $ 100 Learn the basics of cartoon strip and panel development. Create characters, add expressions and learn inking techniques. A treasury will be assembled at the end of the class. Returnees will be challenged. Session 4: ALL NEW Crazy Chemistry June Grades 3-5 1:00-4:30 Solids, liquids and gasses-oh my. Polymers, ph and density-no lie. Come explore chemistry like never before with hands-on, exciting experiments and activities designed to satisfy both blooming and budding scientists. Who doesn t like liquid nitrogen, dry ice, alka seltzer rockets, flubber and so much more? Session 5: Spy Club June Grades 3-7 1:00-4:30

2 Get ready to explore what it takes to be a Secret Agent and learn the science of undercover intelligence. Basic training covers the theory and practice of surveillance, night-vision, stealth, perception/awareness, coding, self-defense, and critical thinking. Session 6: Disgusting Dissection June Grades 4-8 1:00-4:30 Discover animals from the inside out. Apply dissection techniques to organisms such as sharks, earthworms, crayfish, and cow eyes, hearts and lungs. Session 7: Comics, Manga & Graphic Novels A Googenius Camp June Grades :00-4:00 Cost $ 100 Meets Friday Hone your graphic story telling skills and create a collective graphic novel. Comic book, manga and basic graphic novel illustrations highlighted. Returnees welcome for more advanced exercises and a final project. Session 8: Pirates Cove July Explore the awesome world under the sea. Learn about the marine creatures that make their homes beneath the surface. See how they live, breathe, eat, survive & find some treasure too. Session 9: Club Vet July Grades 3-5 9:00-12:00 Explore the exciting world of animal science and care. If you want to own a pet, be a vet or work/volunteer in a pet related job, then definitely come learn about animal habitats, nutrition and health care. Session 10: Movie Making June Grades 3-6 9:00-12:00 Explore the world if digital video communication through the creativity & technology of movie making. You ll use digital video cameras; edit software & Mac computers to make your own movie.

3 Session 11: NEW Club Vet Safari July K-2 1:00-4:30 Explore the awesome world of animals as we expand our study of our furry, feathered and scaled friends across the globe (think Lion King or Madagascar). If you ve wanted to be a Safari Guide, Vet, Zookeeper or start your own pet business this is the camp for you! Session 12: Lego League July Grades 3-6 1:00-4:30 "Interested in exploring First Lego League challenges? Use your Lego NXT camp skills to tackle the 2010 FLL Body Forward challenge with your camp mates." Session 13: VideoGame Making July Grades 4 & up 1:00-4:30 Cost $ 124 Learn to design and modify your own exciting arcade-style games...control characters, objects and outcomes as you increase the difficulty level and add features. (Not Mac compatible). Bring a 1GB flash drive or buy one at camp $10. Session 14: Science of Phineas and Ferb June Grades K-3 9:00-12:00 Hey Kids, we know what you re going to do today!!! Each day we will watch one episode, learn a bit more of the science behind the show and then explore the theme of the day. We ll start off with roller coasters on Monday and its all downhill excitement from there! Session 15: Lego II June Grades 3-6 9:00-12:00 This camp is a continuation of the fundamentals of the NXT system with an increased emphasis on teamwork and problem solving. All new robots and challenges will be used. Session 16: Creepy Crawlies June 24-27

4 Grades K-2 1:00-4:30 Hakuna Matata is the theme for this camp as we explore the awesome world of bugs from butterflies to beetles, spiders to wasps and things in between. Session 17: Art 2D and 3D June Grades 3-8 1:00-4:30 Art 2D/3D- Explore the elements and principles of both two and three dimensional art through the 2D mediums of watercolor, graphite and colored pencils as well as the 3D mediums of clay, wood and metals. Session 18: Movie Making June Grades 3-6 1:00-4:30 Explore the world if digital video communication through the creativity & technology of movie making. You ll use digital video cameras; edit software & Mac computers to make your own movie. Session 19: Princess Science July 8-12 Grades PK-2 9:00-12:00 Being a princess is not all tiaras and glittery gowns. It takes a lot to run a kingdom. Come explore the magical world of gems, color spectrums, flight and fashion through the eyes of science. Session 20: Science of Phineas and Ferb July 8-12 Grades 3-5 9:00-12:00 Hey Kids, we know what you re going to do today!!! 5 Calling all autobots... roll out as we explore machines, robots and motion to the dark side of the moon and beyond. Learn the science behind the prime world of transformers. Session 22: Lego 1.5 July 8-11 Grades 2-4 1:00-4:30 This camp will build a different project each day and modify an existing program. Teamwork/creativity are not as emphasized, but students will work in pairs (3 s if they want). Session 23: VideoGame Making July 8-11 Grades 4 & up 1:00-4:30 Cost $ 124 Learn to design and modify your own exciting arcade-style games...control characters, objects and outcomes as you increase the difficulty level and add features. Topics covered are: Fingerprinting, DNA analysis, blood typing and more. Session 26: Tykes Lego July Grades K-2 1:00-4:30 Get ready to build awesome Lego structures as you are introduced to the science of simple machines, the mechanics of motion and the control of forces. Session 27: Science of Art July 15-18

6 Grades 3-6 1:00-4:30 Explore the awesome world of art as you create your own masterpieces and learn the science of painting, ceramics, printing, photography and sculpture. Session 28: Robotech July Grades 4-8 1:00-4:30 This Lego camp will use the NXT system to challenge your teamwork and creativity. More complex tasks will take your robotic skills higher. Session 29: Pre-Historic Planet July Discover the world of dinosaurs as we learn the types, where they lived and what they ate. Explore rock formations, volcanoes, bones & fossils. Session 30: Lil Lady Lego July Cost The science of simple machines, construction and forces meets the design and style of the new Friends Legos. Bring your friends for a great time to explore just how fun learning with Legos can be. Session 31: Science of Star Wars July Grades 2-6 9:00-12:00 Cost $ 124 Travel galaxies a long time ago and far, far, away. We will explore force shields, photons, creatures, droids, and life forces. Build your own light saber and hovercraft and more during our weeklong Jedi training. Session 32: ALL NEW Shipwreck Adventures Treasure Hunters July Grades 4-8 1:00-4:30 National Treasure meets Pirates of the Caribbean as we follow the clues and explore shipwrecks from 70 BC to WWII in search of treasure. We ll learn about archaeology, shipbuilding, navigation, marine life, diving and more. Session 33: Science of Phineas and Ferb July 22-25

Session 34: ALL NEW Inventions July Grades 6-9 1:00-4:30 Cost $ 124 Builders, inventors and problem solvers join us as we explore the world around us and design engineering solutions to daily problems. We ll also discuss the ways we use everyday technology and apply it to new challenges. Hands-on science at its interdisciplinary best!
