1 Tennessee Dental Hygienist Association Fall 2014 s Message L. WHITNEY HOWERTON, RDH, BS, BA TDHA PRESIDENT Celebrating the 100 year anniversary of dental hygiene created a whirlwind of excitement and passionate renewal in dental hygienist across the country. In 2014, the Tennessee Dental Hygienists Association has continued this revitalization by working diligently to lead legislative efforts, promote Written Protocol, and continue putting our best foot forward in Tennessee. There are so many counties in our beautiful state that have an overwhelming number of underserved children, men, and women. We should embrace the abundant knowledge that we as hygienist have and utilize it to raise awareness of our profession, access to care issues, and help treat those in need. Written Protocol is perfect for this opportunity! With 5 years of dental hygiene experience, a contract with a participating dentist and a location (public health setting, nursing home, special care facility, or non-profit clinic) you can be a part of bringing our state to optimum oral and overall health! In early September, I will be traveling to various districts and dental hygiene school across the state to inform dental hygienists and students of the need in our state and how to get more involved. Dental hygiene is represented in many realms of dentistry; general, pediatrics, periodontics, orthodontics. Let us share these resources with each other and the community. I charge each of you to get involved by attending health fairs and encouraging your office or school to host a community service day with free or reduced fee treatment. You would be amazed at the turn out! I have HOPE for our profession and our future. I am a Hygienist Optimistic about the Progression of Education! Educate the community, keep up to date on quality continuing education courses, and think about furthering your personal education by pursuing a bachelors, masters, or even doctorate degree. I am proud to say that I am a dental hygienists in Tennessee, leading the way for future hygienists, and showing that my profession is evolving into something more than could have even been imagined. Won t you join me? Please contact me with any questions you may have regarding Written Protocol, service learning opportunities for students, or how to set up a community service event! 4 ADHA SENIOR DELEGATE REPORT Susan Melton It has been an honor to serve as ADHA Delegate, and I appreciate the privilege to serve TDHA in this capacity. The ADHA CLL was held June 19-24, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The TDHA delegation included Kelly Gross, Whitney Howerton, and me, with Carmen Pinkston serving as alternate delegate. In preparation for CLL, we hosted and participated in the District VI workshop held in Nashville. During the CLL, our delegation participated in all ADHA business meetings. ADHA approached the Federal Trade Commission in March and December 2013, and Feb., 2014 regarding concerns that the Commission on Dental Accreditation was using their authority to impede the development of advanced dental hygiene practitioners. Through ADHA's ongoing national advocacy efforts, the issue of dental therapy education programs reached the highest level at the FTC. ADHA Executive Director Ann Battrell, MSDH, ADHA Director of Governmental Affairs Ann Lynch (former US Senator MN) and ADHA Director of Education Pam Steinbach, RN, MS met with FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez and her staff. This was a proud and pivotal moment for ADHA. Chairwoman Ramirez is a ial Appointee and the highest ranking officer of the FTC. The result was a 15 page letter to CODA essentially telling the ADA and CODA that they need to stop and take pause! In the words of the ADHA appointed CODA Commissioner, Kathi Shepherd, the written comments provided by the FTC were a "real game changer." Because of the FTC s recommendations, CODA made significant changes regarding supervision, Baccalaureate requirement, advanced standing, and educational program directors. We can also use the FTC letter when we present legislation on a state level. House of Delegates-acted upon 17 Resolutions, 2 By- Laws changes, and elected ADHA Officers. Leadership Mentoring Forum, Legislative Workshop and Membership Workshop Mega Issues Discussion- The question was What are the implications of AD- HA's new future vision on the constituent (state) and component (local) associations? Also, I served on Reference Committee A while Carmen served as a page. Delegation met with Jose Rodriquez-ADHA Manger of Governmental Affairs. His suggestion for us is to work on building coalitions. TDHA has joined the Rural Health Association, and will be seeking other organizations with whom to partner. ADHA DISTRICT VI 4
