3 About the Campus CSULB is home to 84 buildings, including the state-of-the-art Molecular and Life Sciences Center; specialized facilities for Engineering Technology, Nursing, Art, Industrial and Interior Design, and Music; the largest, best-equipped instructional dance facility in the United States; and the extensive University Library, which houses the Spidell Technology Center, the largest student computing facility on campus. Activities and Services on Campus Choosing a university, especially overseas, is not an easy job. I did a lot of homework on finding Cal State Long Beach, and it turned out to be one of the most amazing places ever. Known as the International City, Long Beach is home to one of the world s largest shipping ports. 5 CSULB Colleges College of the Arts (COTA) The College of the Arts is California s largest and most comprehensive publicly funded school for the arts. It includes the School of Art, the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, the departments of Dance, Design, Film and Electronic Arts, and Theatre Arts, as well as the University Art Museum (UAM) and the Carpenter Performing Arts Center (CPAC). College of Business Administration (CBA) CSULB s College of Business Administration is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB), and is the only California business school to have received the California Prospector Award. College of Education (CED) The College of Education provides undergraduate and graduate studies in education, and offers specific curricula focusing on the preparation of teachers and other education professionals. The College of Education has certificate programs that are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CTC). The college produces one of the largest numbers of teachers within the California State University system and is nationally recognized for its K-18 collaboration with the Long Beach Seamless Education Partnership. College of Engineering (COE) The College of Engineering ranks among the top 50 undergraduate engineering programs in the United States, according to the U.S. News & World Report in its 2013 edition of America s Best Colleges Guide. Its programs in aerospace, chemical, civil, computer, electrical and chemical engineering are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) The College of Health and Human Services offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide range of disciplines. The college s academic programs collaborate with community partners to create a studentcentered learning environment that accurately reflects dynamic societal needs. The School of Nursing is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence in nursing education, and is the largest program in the California State University system. College of Liberal Arts (CLA) The College of Liberal Arts is the largest college on campus, with 27 departments and programs, several innovative centers and projects, and over 300 outstanding faculty members. The college faculty is among the best in the nation and has received a variety of national and international awards. College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics seeks to educate the next generation of scientists and mathematicians. Students are provided a broad-based, fundamental education in the natural sciences and mathematics and are challenged to think critically, analytically, and creatively. CSULB s new Hall of Science is a $105 million dollar state-of-the-art facility, with one of the most modern science complexes in the U.S. College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) The College of Continuing and Professional Education is a self-support, interdisciplinary college that works closely with its university, business, community, and international partners to serve California s workforce and economy. CCPE provides expanded access to CSULB s exceptional academic programs and educational resources. 8 American Language Institute The American Language Institute (ALI) offers academic English training to international students who are seeking admission to CSULB or other institutions in the U.S. The Intensive English Program (IEP) offered by ALI is accredited by the Commission of English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). Students who do not meet the CSULB English Language Requirement may gain conditional admission to the university by completing the required Intensive English Program level through ALI. At ALI, students will find dedicated faculty and staff with a commitment to student success. ALI students enjoy access to university facilities and events on campus, and experience easy transition into CSULB s degree programs. Students are encouraged to participate in activities on campus, such as intramural sports and social clubs. 9 Intensive English Program ( IEP ) 13 weeks in Summer (25 hours per week) 16 weeks in Fall and Spring (23 hours per week) IEP is designed to prepare students for academic work at the college/university level. The program is offered every Spring, Summer, and Fall term. A placement test given during new student orientation determines the level in which students are placed. Students may begin in any term and continue year-round. Beginning to advanced English learners are welcome. Learn more at University Credit Courses Students in Levels 5 and 6 of the IEP program may take 1 to 2 CSULB university credit courses through Open University. Students in Levels 5 and 6 taking Open University courses in the Fall and Spring add an additional week of studies for final exams. 10 English Demonstration Waiver Applicants who do not meet the CSULB English Language requirement ( ) and need to improve their proficiency first may do so through the ALI. This means you can attend the ALI and gain direct entry to CSULB upon completing the required Intensive English Program level ( TOEFLWaiver ). Undergraduates Successful completion of Level 4 of the Intensive English Program fulfills English Language admission requirements for a CSULB undergraduate degree program ( or partnering institution ) without taking a standardized test. Graduates Successful completion of Level 6 of the Intensive English Program fulfills English Language admission requirements for most CSULB graduate degree programs without taking a standardized test. Supporting international application documents and the online application confirmation page must be mailed to the ALI. It is also necessary to apply to the IEP or already be attending the ALI during this time. ALI teachers and faculty are so friendly. They always encourage students to push forward, not only with study but also daily. The class quality is the best I ve experienced. 12 MBA Preparation Program 16 weeks in Fall and Spring The MBA Preparation Program is designed for students with advanced English skills who are preparing for entrance into a graduate business degree program in the United States. Students focus on important topics in international business administration, finance planning, and sustainability. Students are expected to examine contemporary case studies, complete team projects, and analyze today s business trends and practices, all while improving their academic English skills and preparing for the GMAT or GRE. 13 Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Training 8 weeks (160 hours) The TEFL program is designed for those who are interested in teaching English as a Foreign Language in a variety of settings around the world. The program covers the latest in learning theory and teaching methodology with an emphasis on their practical applications in the classroom. The program is designed to provide supply chain/logistics training from a U.S. perspective. Additionally, it offers English language instruction from ALI and/or CSULB courses offered through Open University. Students will also experience various aspects of the U.S. culture. The GLS designation is endorsed by industry professionals as a comprehensive educational program for individuals entering or seeking advancement in the field of supply chain management and logistics. The designation enhances marketability and opportunities for career advancement. 15 Customized Programs Our customized programs can be designed to meet the needs of your group as to the number of days or hours in class or through a combination of lectures, field trips, and activities. Programs can be customized on-site on the CSULB campus or off-site, such as our English for Professionals in the Workplace programs. ALI can customize our existing programs such as Teaching English as a Foreign Language or the Practical English Program, as well as customizing programs for group professional training. 16 Study the Beach Study the Beach B) is a non-degree program for visiting (fee-paying) international students who want to study abroad at CSULB for one or two semesters. We offer: U A full load of credit-bearing courses with American students U A variety of general education and major-specific courses U Official transcripts available upon completion of term U Access to campus resources U Opportunities to network during specialized student activities U Cultural and group excursions Note: Course registration starts on the first day of classes using a registration form that will require instructor and department approval. Enrollment will be determined by space availability and a prerequisite check (if required by department). Special B Program Requirements Flexibility: Students must be flexible with their course choices, as students will not know their final class schedule until the first week of class. No specific classes or courses listed on your wish list are guaranteed for registration. Planning: Along with the regular application, B students should submit a list of 6 10 classes they are interested in taking during their desired term. 17 International Training Programs International Training Programs (ITP) offers fully customized short- and long-term training programs in various fields and disciplines. In each of our programs, highly qualified faculty and industry leaders present on topics that respond to the individual needs of each training group. Visits to government agencies, schools, and industry sites, as well as excursions to the cultural and natural treasures of Southern California, can be built into our programs as well. 19 Housing There are different types of housing based on student s preference: on-campus housing, off-campus apartments, rooms for rent, and houses to share. Housing fees are generally $650-$1,200 per month, plus the cost of food and utilities. Residential Housing (On-Campus Housing) Students interested in residential housing must have their CSULB campus ID number to apply at housing. The accommodation is for a full academic year (Fall and Spring). It is important to consider your housing preference as there is a $400 non-refundable deposit requirement. Temporary Housing CSULB students often stay in one of many nearby hotels if temporary housing is needed while finding a more semi-permanent housing accommodation.
