4 Principal s welcome Thank you for taking the time to read our latest prospectus. in a competitive job market, choosing the right college and programme of study to start your career journey can be very difficult decisions. There is a huge array of choices for young people today and it is more important than ever to make informed decisions about your future at an early stage. Your career may seem a long way off but decisions made now can influence and affect your options later on. Not everyone starts at the same place or aims for the same destination, but I hope you will be reassured that whatever your existing achievements, we have a pathway to help you to achieve your ambitions. A great deal of planning has gone into the College you see today. We continue to invest in our buildings and facilities to ensure that our students are learning in a suitable environment to allow them to make the best of their time at College. We offer a wide range of enrichment and enterprise activities to inspire and motivate you as well as offering support and encouragement along the way. 5 College life Learner voice Do you want to represent your fellow classmates? You can become a Course Representative and attend departmental learner forums. This is your chance to make changes to your course and College. The Students Union The Students Union is located in the atrium on the lower ground floor at the Old Mill Lane campus. Come in and find out how you can get involved in College life. The Union run lots of activities, as well as a volunteering scheme. 6 Money matters guaranteed bursary If you are aged and currently living on your own, or in care or are leaving care, you could be eligible for a bursary of up to 1,200 per year. Childcare Financial help towards the cost of childcare may be available in certain circumstances. Tuition fees You will not have to pay tuition or exam fees if** You are aged on 31 August 2015 and studying a funded course You receive certain benefits and are actively seeking employment You are years old and looking to study your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification **terms and conditions apply All tuition fee information is correct at the time of publication. Did you know? You don t have to carry cash on you. You can load money onto your student card and pay for food, drink and other items available at the College through our SWIPEit cashless system. 7 Earn to Learn Fantastic work experience opportunities are available within College. You can earn a range of rewards, including: travel, food, trips, equipment, high street vouchers - even a haircut. Being an Earn to Learn volunteer is great for people who have some spare time and who might not be eligible for student funding. I would recommend the scheme to any student coming to College this year as it can benefit you in more ways than you think! Martin Braidley Former Earn to Learn volunteer FrEE BUS SErViCES We realise that getting to and from College may not be very easy for everyone which is why we have funded the following return bus routes for our students: Shelley > Barnsley College (Old Mill Lane campus) Stocksbridge via Penistone > Barnsley College (Old Mill Lane campus) Old Mill Lane campus > Wigfield Farm (Animal Care/Horticulture) The bus routes are FREE for our students and operate on a first come, first served basis. Each route will operate in the morning in order to get students into College before lessons start and a return service will be provided after lessons finish. Please contact Student Services on Tel: for details of pick-up points and times. Also available: FREE travel for those with a household income of less than 35,000* (16-18 year olds). FREE local authority concessionary bus pass for students under the age of 18 (on 1 Sept 2015). Available on three levels, Intermediate, Advanced and Higher, Apprenticeships are work based qualifications combining on the job experience with off the job training. On the job Whatever work area you choose, you ll get valuable work experience, learn how your sector operates and get a chance to apply the techniques you learn in training to your everyday work. Off the job With Barnsley College you ll follow a structured training programme leading to a recognised qualification which directly supports your job. You will normally study one day a week in College and spend the other four in work applying what you ve learned. We offer over 50 Apprenticeship pathways in areas from Accounting to Warehousing and Storage so we re bound to have something for you. How to become an Apprentice 1. The state-of-the art sports facilities at our Honeywell Sports Village include a 3G pitch, a multi-use games area, indoor sports arenas, two gyms and a fitness studio. The 2014 event saw more than 300 students, staff, sponsors and local dignitaries enjoy a glittering awards ceremony, dinner, an inspirational speech from John Tanner, Project Manager at Barnsley Museums, and excellent entertainment provided by students from the Music, Media and Performance Department and Barnsley Sixth Form College. There are three pathways available focusing on horse care, riding and breeding. You will also undertake practical experience at Wigfield Farm and Worsbrough Country Park including day field trips and longer residential trips. 27 L3 three Extended Diploma Digital Photography Art and Design Pathway* Entry Requirements 5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C including English Language and an art related subject. Length of course: 2 years Course content The course is designed for people who have achieved at least GCSE standard in an art or design subject and want a career in photography or a related subject. The course introduces students to studio and location photography and provides the opportunity to practice a range of specialisms including documentary, fine art, editorial, advertising and fashion photography.
